DEBATE: SOCIAL MEDIA DESTROYS HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS

Before debating the issue, vote on whether you are in favor or against the motion:

Procedure:
GROUP A will make the case that new forms of social media like Facebook and Twitter are doing fundamental
damage to the way humans relate to each other and to the social and cultural benefits provided by face-to-face
interaction.
GROUP B will counter that social media are enhancing human relationships and making us smarter.

Brainstorm and organize ideas

Individual brainstorm you have five minutes for individual brainstorming.

Write your points using key words rather than full sentences.

Group brainstorm in groups share and make notes of all the ideas.

From the brainstorm identify between 7 and 9 arguments.

Procedure
Each group will select two speakers who will represent the two sides of the debate.
Speaker 1 from Group A will give his/her speech, followed by Speaker 1 from group B.
A moderator will summarize each of the speakers points as a reminder to the audience.
This will be followed by Speaker 2 from Group A who will rebut his/her opponents arguments and
then present his/her own points. Finally Speaker 2 from Group B will follow suit.

The moderator will again summarize the points made by each team.

A class vote is finally taken and the winning team will be the team that has changed most peoples
minds comparing the vote prior to the debate with the vote at the end of the debate.

How to structure the speeches

Introduction what do you stand for?

Preview What are the names of the points you are going to cover?

Rebuttal (unless you are the first speaker) you can say first lets take a look at what we heard
from the previous speaker and disagree with their points.

Point One - Name your point, explain your point, and provide evidence to support your
reasoning)

Point Three Name, Explanation, Evidence

Reminder remind your audience of the points you have covered
