I am applying for the International Student Exchange Program because I am

greatly interested in being able to apply and at the same time, expand my
understanding of the concepts and theories I have learned about my chosen field
of study during my two years in the University of the Philippines Diliman. As a junior
majoring in English Language Studies, I am greatly fascinated with World Englishes
and its differences from the English that I am currently studying. As English is
considered the universal tongue, the need for its instruction is ever-growing. The
knowledge I have gained about the language, along with the experience and
exposure I would obtain should I be given a chance, would be noble devices I could
use to teach the language to my fellow countrymen, and to those others willing and
needing to learn.
In the two years I have spent in the University of the Philippines Diliman, I
have gained a better understanding and approach to the English language. I have
taken courses such as English Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology and Syntax,
Semantics, Pragmatics, and Discourse Analysis. Since I am also interested in how
language is used in different places and situations, and the changes it undergoes, I
have taken courses such as Linguistics, Creative Writing in Popular Culture, Theatre,
and Literature; all of which are beneficial to language study. If given the chance to
be an exchange student, I would be exposed to even more variants of the language
that I have taken interest in. Not only that, I would also be able to experience and
collect data from another language that is not used in the Philippines; something
that would engage me even more in the study.
The International Student Exchange Program is an avenue for students like
me to further develop our knowledge in our chosen fields, and for us to experience
learning in a whole, new environment. I think this is a great opportunity for me to
experience holistic academic growth and to be able to explore the world through the
lens of language learning. Other than that, I also think this will be an experience
where I could learn more about the world on my own. As someone who enjoys
learning as much as breathing, I strongly believe that the International Student
Exchange Program would be my bridge to a more wholesome development as a
student and as a human being. This program could help not only myself, but also to
others who I would be honored to teach in the future.
I sincerely hope that I would be given the chance to become an exchange
student. I believe that after the program, I would have gained a better perspective
of my chosen field, and I would be able to use it to enlighten and, hopefully,
educate other people in the future. I am truly confident that I would be able to make
a great contribution not only to the university, but also to the people of our country.
