alues are the internal precepts by which we make our decisions.

When we are conf

ronted by choices, options, or moral dilemmas, the decisions we make will indica
te what values we hold. The five human and moral values are righteousness, peace
, truth, love and non-violence. Human Values give worthiness and respect to life
. The foundation of human values are based on .
Dignity of human life .
Respect and consideration for the "other" .
The importance of integrity and service .
An attitude of non-violence .
The individual and collective quest for peace and happiness.
Today the world has changed .the old values are no more cared for a
nd there is value erosion .Now greatness, goodness and success is measured by th
e wealth one has. The main aim of life is to earn more and by any means. Simple
living is no longer a motto of life .To achieve the luxurious in life people hav
e become greedy. Selfish. Dishonest and adopt foul means to collect money, Peopl
e now exploit their own kith and kin. High ideals of patriotism, selfless devoti
on to society, sacrifice and service are hollow words for them. Honesty is no mo
re, best policy.
Today there is both moral and human value erosions. Today corruptio
n has become a way of life and has been spreading deep into the society. Drinkin
g and drug abuse are the social evils, which has affected one fourth of the worl
d population. Violence in schools has caused many problems among students, famil
ies, schools, and residents of the areas. The cause of violence can be blamed ma
inly on drugs and gangs. Terrorism and Non-violence is the order of the day. War
in the 21st century has begun with great ferocity and cruelty. We have never be
fore seen so much of violence, hatred, conflicts and mistrust. Today nations, bo
th developed and developing, face erosion of humanistic, ethical and moral value
s.
The world should realise that when Gandhiji talked of non-violence,
self-suffering, consideration for others, honesty, he had only fear of value er

Poverty in India
Introduction: Poverty refers to a situation when people are deprived of basic ne
cessities of life. It is often characterized by inadequacy of food, shelter and
clothes. In other words, poverty refers to a state of privation where there is a
lack of essential needs for subsistence.
India is one of the poorest countries in the world. Many Indian people do not ge
t two meals a day. They do not have good houses to live in. Their children do no
t get proper schooling.

Poor people are the depressed and deprived class. They do not get proper nutriti
on and diet. Their conditions have not sufficiently improved even long after ove
r 65 years of our Independence.
Poverty in urban India: Just like most of the growing and developing countries,
there has been continuous increase in Urban population.
Poor people migrate from rural areas to cities and towns in search of employment
/financial activity.
The income of more than 8 crore urban people is estimated to fall below poverty
line (BPL).
In addition to this, there are around 4.5 crore urban people whose income level
is on borderline of poverty level.

A income of urban poors is highly unstable. A large number of them are either ca
sual workers or self-employed.
Banks and Financial institutions are reluctant to provide them loan because of t
he unstable income.
Five states that constitutes around 40% of all urban poor people of India are Ut
tar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh.
Around 35% of the total population of the four metro cities (Delhi, Kolkata, Che
nnai and Mumbai) consists of slum population.
A large portion of people living in slums are illiterate.
The initiatives taken to deal with the problem of urban poverty has not yielded
the desired results.
