FACULTY OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

BFC32803 - REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN II

SEMESTER 1 2016/2017

1.0 Project instruction:

This project must be carried out by a group of maximum four or five (4 or 5) members only.
This project contributes 20% to the coursework mark.
2.0 Details of the project:
New SIX to TEN storey for any types of building will be developed in Kuala Terengganu area.
The land area of development is at PT21332 and PT21334, width area of 605m2 as shown in
Figure 1. The location area have been cleaned and cleared up for construction purpose as
shown in Figure 2. Any groups can choose any lot of land area to develop their projects. The
groups can propose any types of building for this area.

Figure 1: Proposed site at Kuala Terengganu district

Figure 2: Location area for new development

As appointed structural engineering consultant, your team is ordered to prepare the design and
details of the building including a complete report of the following scopes:
a) Comprehensive FRAME ANALYSIS, COLUMN DESIGN and FOUNDATION DESIGN.
b) Illustration of the building in three-dimensional.
c) Description of the proposed building and details of project.
d) Layout of building for each floor, side and elevation views complete with location of columns,
beams and footings.
e) All design parameters consists of all variables and permanent actions. It must follow the
recommendation of Eurocode. Any relevant assumptions can be made to calculate the wind
action based on MS1553:2002.
f)

Analysis of design actions subjected to all probable combinations of loads.

g) The dimension of beam and thickness of slab must be designed based on relevant
requirement for the multi-story building.
h) The foundation must be designed according the soil condition at the proposed site.
i)

Detailing.

j)

Discussion and a clear recommendation of the design.

k) Any relevant assumptions can be employed where ever necessary.

3.0 Report:
a) Report should include all information/parameters, analysis, design and drawing of structure
and structure plan arrangement.
b) Computer drawing using a CAD system is COMPULSORY. Illustration of the building can
be produced using Google SketchUp.
c) Frame analysis can be performed using civil engineering computer application such as
Staad.Pro, Esteem, SAP2000 and so on. However, frame analysis under wind loading
must be conducted manually.
d) A compile report must be submitted upon completing the course. Report must be submitted
in in CD in Microsoft Word format (softcopy and binding versions).
e) All drawings of layout and detailing must be produced and printed in A4 paper.
f)

Prepare an organize report with Table of Content, separator, introduction of projects, all
assumptions made and any relevant information. Each member must also sign the
Declaration of Student Code of Ethic.

4.0 Assessment:
The assessment of this project will base on three concepts, cognitive, psychomotor and
affective.
Brief criteria of the assessment are:
a) Structural system and idealization, concepts and assumptions
b) Plan and layout
c) Analysis and design
d) Detailing
e) Report and organization of report
f) Professionalism, ethics and creativity

Preliminary report will be checked during lecture. Final report must be submitted in
SOFTCOPY via CD and HARDCOPY.
If the project is submitted late without sufficient cause, a penalty shall be applied. A deduction
of 15% of the maximum mark available from the actual mark achieved by the group shall be
imposed upon expiry of the deadline. A further deduction of 5% of the maximum mark available
from the actual achieved by the group shall then be imposed of the next subsequence days.

6.0 Warning:
Plagiarism and academic dishonesty can have some severe penalties and repercussions.Any
blatant copying, evidence of electronic files shared, or exact same designs will result in a grade
of ZERO for all parties involved.
