The Gospel of Mark

NT352 Fall 2016
Disciples in His Kingdom
Mark 9:30-50

Servants in the

Kingdom 30-37
• Teaching Disciples about Suffering 30-32
● He wanted privacy to instruct disciples about God’s redemption plan
● “Son of Man” = messianic title of divinity and humanity (Dan 7:13-14)
● He is the unique one – dual nature of humanity and divinity (7:13)
● He is the One who with dominion in an everlasting kingdom (7:14)

● The messiah did come first to deliver but from sin not political powers
● The disciples did not understand about the resurrection

Servants in the

Kingdom 30-37
• Progressive revelation from Genesis to Rev – i.e.
● Genesis 3:15 = the basic promise of the “seed” who will crush the serpent
●Deut 8:15 = God will send another prophet like Moses (Jesus)
● Isaiah 9:6-7 = presents the king born in line of David, mighty God
● Isaiah 53:11 = the suffering servant who takes our iniquities
● Psalm 22 = the crucifixion in detail – cited by Jesus on cross (Mk 15:34)
●Psalm 16:10 = prophesies the resurrection of Messiah
● Mark 9:30-32 = Jesus states it clearly here (and elsewhere)
● Acts 13:34-39 = later on, Paul explains this resurrection to the Jews

Servants in the

Kingdom 30-37
• Teaching Disciples about Servanthood 33-37
● In the house Jesus asked for a confession to further teach them
● The disciples were silent under conviction for their selfish ambition
● If anyone wants to be first, let him be last of all and servant of all?
● Jesus declared himself the last of all by being servant of all! (Mark 10:45)
● Jesus takes a child in his arms - what is the object lesson?

Unity in the
Kingdom 38-41

Teaching on Unity 38-41
● They tried to stop a man who was not part of their group – lessons?
● Can’t stop it if it’s a genuine work of God – “not follow us?” (Acts 5:38-39)
● This man was succeeding where they had recently failed (Mk 9:18)

● Mighty work = authenticity is proven in power and truthfulness of action
● Jesus said not to stop the man but also did not say to join the man
● Cup of cold Water rewarded – not fragmented, how is this connected?

Stumbling vs. Salting in

the Kingdom 42-50

The Severity of Stumbling 42-48
●Millstone = stumbling others is a terrible responsibility before God

Notice the
massive size of
this millstone
with the post in
the middle. A
person would
push the
horizontal beam
or a donkey
would be yoked
to it and would
pull it and circle
around the mill.

Stumbling vs. Salting in

the Kingdom 42-50
●“These little ones” = actual children or the disciples?
●Better to cut off a limb = context of stumbling little ones

Stumbling vs. Salting in

the Kingdom 42-50

The Saltiness of Salt 49-50
●Salted with fire = over a dozen interpretations
●Losing saltiness = the flavor of Christ has been diminished

A major commodity
for ancient
settlements in the
area, the salt that
crystalizes out of
the waters of the
Dead Sea was
regularly gathered
and traded to other
parts of the Levant
for use as
seasoning, in the
preservation of
food and in Temple
offerings (Leviticus
2:13).
