Aims
Designing and manufacturing an inlet manifold and optimising the volumetric efficiency of the inlet flow
of an engine. The aim of the specific inlet manifold to be produced is to increase the power of the
engine while the car kept drivable with a power delivery that is smooth this in return allows maximum
flow of air throughout the entire rev range and have a high fuel efficiency
Designing and manufacturing a single circle air restrictor to limit the power capability of the engine as
this a rule out in place by formula student
The designed inlet manifold will be fitted to a Yamaha YZF-R6L liquid-cooled, 4 stroke engine is produced
with bore of 65.5mm and stroke of 44.5mm. It is a regular gasoline engine with a fuel capacity of 17L.
Objectives
Following the rules and regulations from the formula student 2016, using the GT-POWER Engine
simulation software, flow analysis using other tools and further research from the internet to optimise
the inlet volumetric efficiency.
In order to optimise the inlet volumetric efficiency of an engine the inlet runner is tuned to a certain
length this is called inlet pulse tuning.
For the inlet air restrictor, from the formula student rules the maximum restrictor diameter is 20.0mm.
This restrictor must be placed between the throttle and the engine. Using this restrictor means that the
maximum mass flow rate of the fuel and air is fixed, therefore the purpose is to enable the engine to
draw in the maximum flow rate with a minimal pull produced by the engine.
Steps in achieving the air restrictor would include
Producing a cad drawing of the inlet manifold and air restrictor in order to carry out a stress analysis on
the designed inlet manifold. With the use of SOLIDWORKS and AutoCAD packages to draw and design
my two individual parts. Then run designed parts on SOLIWORKS stress analysis simulation.
Then manufacturing this parts in the workshop or buy parts according specification. This includes
Testing parts manufactured with the Yamaha engine.
Assembling parts with final car, then test driving on a test track.
Background research
Pre intake stroke, When the inlet valves opens pulse containing the right amount of fuel and air mixed
together charge down the inlet runner and inlet port this pulse of mixed fuel and air moves quickly
towards the inlet valve head. When the inlet valve are closed this mixture hits the back of the valve head
then gets compressed and moves back up through the inlet port and inlet runners until it reaches
atmospheric pressure. The pressure at with the pulse is at when it moved up the inlet runner is relatively
higher compared to the vacuum pressure at the inlet port. So this pressure wave moves downwards
from the inlet runner to the inlet port. If this pulse gets to the inlet valve again and it is opened, the
mixture is pushed into the combustion chamber. This in return increases the volumetric efficiency which
increases the torque made by the engine. The car built is for racing purposes therefore it will have
almost no inlet runner in return casus a pulse that is most efficient at higher rpm creating more torque
at high engine speeds.("Optimizing Volumetric Efficiency With Inlet Runner Length Pulse Tuning".
