LESSON PLAN OUTLINE
JMU Elementary Education Program

A. TITLE/TYPE OF LESSON
Read Aloud and Retelling
The Amazing Turkey Rescue by Steve Metzger
B. CONTEXT OF LESSON
At this time the students are learning about Thanksgiving. My CT has already read multiple books
aloud to her students about thanksgiving and has given them at home activities regarding turkeys.
These activities have been about saving the turkeys from being eaten on Thanksgiving
C. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The students will sit in their assigned spots on the rug
and pay attention to the reading.

The students will be able to retell the story after it

has been read.

While reading the story the students will be sitting

on their bottoms with their eyes towards the book.
They will not be overly fidgeting or clearly not
paying attention.
After the story is read I will use the yellow brick
road cards my CT uses to help the students retell the
story. The consist of asking who the characters were,
what the setting was, then the plot points of the story
(including the problem and the solution). The
students will be able to accurately answer these
questions.

G. PROCEDURE
This will occur directly after calendar time and prior to lunch. I will have the CT tell the
students that today I (Ms. Cole) am reading the story. I will introduce the story by saying that this is a
story about turkeys during thanksgiving. I will then ask the students to identify the front cover and
back cover of the book, and what the author and illustrators jobs are.

During the book ensure to show off the pictures to the students. When the letter appears in the
corner of the picture make sure to read the letter and show the students where the letter is located. Use
inflection while reading, especially the parts of the book in which the characters are being
exclamatory.
After the story get out the cards and go through the yellow brick road steps, which are first
characters. Ask the students to identify who the characters were in the story. Then with setting, have
them identify where the book took place. For the problem have them answer that there was a fox who
was trying to eat the chicken. With the beginning, middle, and end, have them name the things that
happened in the story in the correct order (does not have to be many small details just big picture). For
the solution they will need to respond that the turkeys tricked the fox and tie him up.
H. DIFFERENTIATION
Have David sit on his squishy (green inflatable) on the rug so he will not shift his weight around as
much and possibly give him the orange ball to squeeze when he gets excited. For Kiarie ensure that
she is paying attention throughout and if she begins to climb up leg, have her sit in her seat to the side
of the rug area.
I. WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT IT?
The students could not be paying attention during the story time, if they are being disruptive to all
other students around them stop the story until they pay attention. If it is not detrimental to other
students and is noticeable then reprimand them. If I do not notice, then the teacher and the assistant
will be there to help.
If no student is answering the questions that have been asked, then I will get the bucket with the name
sticks and begin to call names that way. And if the answers are incorrect after 5 guesses I will help the
students out, either by giving a clue or the answer.
