Name: Erin Henderson Grade Level: 3rd Content Area: Science Technology Used (check all that apply): Blog Wiki Other Website Creation Tool (list): Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: S3L2. Students will recognize the effects of pollution and humans on the environment. a. Explain the effects of pollution (such as littering) to the habitats of plants and animals. b. Identify ways to protect the environment i.e. conservation of resources and recycling of materials. Brief Description of Learning Experience: This project will be introduced in the middle of the unit on pollution. The project will help students apply what they have learned thus far, and conduct further research on the subject matter. During this lesson, students will be addressing the causes and effects of pollution. The teacher will create a blog about pollution and each student will contribute a page of information to the blog. In order to create the blog post, the students must first research different causes and effects of pollution. The students must also identify at least one way to protect the environment from pollution. Once they complete their research, they will create a blog post based on their findings. Their posts will be made to the public in order to get word out about pollution and what we can do to stop it! This project should take around 2-3 days to complete. The audience intended for this project includes the parents of the students (the public), as well as the teacher. The teacher will use the students posts as a formative assessment. Student Engagement/Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi):
This lesson uses LoTi levels 3 (Infusion) and 4 (Integration). Students are creating a blog post in which they are informing the public about pollution. They will take previously learned knowledge and apply it to their research while looking for causes and effects of pollution and how we can protect our environment. Importance of technology: Website-creation tools really allow students to take on the role of a creator. In this particular lesson, the role of the website-creation tool is critical because it allows the students to become feel as though they are journalist informing the people about pollution through the world wide web. Without this tool, the students will not get the same feel. Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Some possible issues could occur with internet safety and student privacy. In order to avoid these issues, the teacher must get permission from the schools administration on the use of the blogs website. Parents also need to be informed about the project. In addition to, the blog must only be made public to the parents of the students in the class, and students names will be fictional. The teacher will also keep a close eye on all students as they are conducting research on the web. *The teacher should review internet safety rules before starting this project.
