Students are required to mentally add and subtract to 20. Within a classroom there is a wide range of mastery of these facts. In Mrs, Moskaluk’s class the students have been grouped in 3 levels. Today i worked with students in the hall practicing their math facts. | continued to work with a few students practicing their spelling and writing. ‘The kids vary in their math skills. Some students know all of the facts while others knew barley any. Mrs. Moskaluk regularly uses parent volunteers in her class room. Before they start they are asked to sign a parent code of conduct. Mrs. Moskaluk showed the class a wordless picture book introducing the the concept of using illustrations to gain meaning from a story. The students worked in groups to explain what happened in a wordless picture book. ‘The students leamed how to gain more understanding by using both text and illustrations. Today | gave a group of children a spelling test while Mrs. ‘Moskaluk worked with another group of children on their reading. Later during the day, the students started to work on “daily 5” where I assisted a few students with their spelling errors, ‘Mrs. Moskaluk’s class room was incredibly well behaved and rarely had to be asked twice to do something or listen. A few students struggle in her class room, but with a little additional help during the year they will be at the same academic level as the other students! Is there someone specific who can help students who struggle in certain subjects? What can be done to assist their academic level?
