UMU Lesson Plan Template

Date: March 24th, 2016

Class Period: 4th
Lesson # & Title: Lesson #1, Real Life
Application
Big Idea/Lesson Focus: Mathematical Average
Essential Question: can the student calculate and identify the average of numbers
Name: Adam Snyder & Frankie Wierick
Grade Level: 5th grade
Subject: Math and Physical Education

Context for Learning:

- Students should be able to provide proof of the new material being learned as well as being
able to demonstrate the steps to punting
Function of the Lesson (check all that apply):
Introduce to a new mathematical skill
Review
Remediation/Reteaching
Practice

Content Standards:
- Ability to correctly present the steps to finding an average, or the ability to explain the
procedure and answer properly

Learning Objectives:
- Given a set a data, the students will be able to apply addition and division in the proper
ways to find the average or mean of said group of data with 84% accuracy

Academic Language (or A.L. Demands, A.L. Objectives):

- Punting or Punt
- Average
- Division

Instructional Materials and Support:

- Video
- Handout
- Use of prior knowledge
- Ball

Prior Knowledge:
- Addition
- Measurement

Assessments:

Pre-Assessment for the unit: (Student 100%, Teachers 0%) Ability to add double-digit
numbers, as well as having division skills
Assessment(s) during the lesson: (Student 80%, Teacher 20%) Handout during the
lesson to see which content needs to be reinforced
Assessment(s) at the end of the lesson: (Student 20%, Teacher 80%) Have a review
section of class planned to correct any confusions

Post-Assessment for the unit: (Student 100%, Teacher 0%) Test over materials and skills
that were presented to the students

Strategies & Learning Tasks

Introduction:
- Question the students, to see what prior knowledge the students may have about
this skill
- Explain to the students the new skill they are about to learn
- While explaining, incorporate the real world application of punting

Presentation/Explicit Instruction:
- Material will be presented step by step
- Each step will be defined and explained why this step needs to be taken

Structured Practice/Exploration:
- There will be multiple practice problems as well as examples
- When each example is completed the following questions, there will be lease instruction
from the teacher and more involvement from the students to see if the new material has
been absorbed

Guided Practice/Specific Feedback:

- They will be graded on their worksheet and get back their grade and what they
might possibly need to work on.

Independent Practice/Application:
- Homework will be assigned in class to complete, as well as take home homework

Closure:
- Students should have the skill to identify a group of numbers and calculate the
average from the set of numbers
- Students should have some knowledge on the basics how to punt

Differentiation, Individualized Instruction, and Assessment:

- For some students, group work may be assigned for students for the teacher to take
students aside for more one-on-one instruction.
