SCIENCE: CONNECTING
CLASSES OF SOCIETY
A Reaction to Metropolis
One of my favorite scenes in the movie is the scene where Freder
goes to the machine rooms to find Maria. He did not find Maria that
time, rather, he found how bad it is to be a worker when he witnessed
the explosion of a huge machine which killed several of them. This
reminds me of how Buddha started his journey to enlightenment. He
has a comfortable and pleasurable life. Then one day, he decided to go
out of his place and find the true human condition: a life of suffering.
In connection to science and technology, it is not enough that we
look and master the concepts and theories. It is also important for us
to look deeper into the society and see the needs of the people. I think
this is the ultimate goal of science and technology especially in
developing countries like the Philippines: to provide solutions for the
problems and needs of the people.
Science, like Freder in Metropolis, acts as a mediator between
classes of society: the ruling class represented by his father Fredersen
and the working class represented by Grot. It makes use of the
resources available to help the poorest of the society. In the same
sense, science cannot survive without the ruling class and the working
class. In nation building, the working and ruling class work together
with the help of science in achieving one goal that is to improve the
nation.

Science connects people whether rich or poor. It can help remove

the divide between societies by providing solutions for the needs of the
people. This, in turn, leads into building a nation, into building a better
Metropolis.
