This article tells a story about a man by the name of Earnest Tate who was a former American
Police Chief in Selma. After his retirement he settled having his own farm however he was
facing a medical issue. He had a narrow Aortic Valve which continuously drained his energy,
changed his eating habits and also strength. As time passed, last year 2015 Earnest got worst
where his heart is taking affect as well as his breathing. However, a Cardiologist from the
University of Alabama was able to perform a procedure replacing his aortic valve with one that
was man made. This surgery was a very risky one because it was an open heart process. The
results of this surgery brought Earnest Tate back to better health. This article shows how medical
technology has helped someone recover from a life threatening situation.

The article The next 20 Years in Technology: Timeline and Commentary Elaborates on what
we could possibly expect with the technological changes in the years ahead. It states facts about
computer based technological being one of the resources that changes mostly. Medical
technology will even enhance the next generations lives. Ian Pearson also mentions how we will
improve technology in many areas like, Automatic Transport, Life with Machines, Home
Gadgets, Energy and environment, Tele-working and Tele-teaching. Each area that has been
mentioned, we can say that technology has improved them.

This next article I found talks about what the next 20 years will look like pertaining to
technology. Many opinions were constructed by various futurists; of course they were not able to
give a definite answer. They could only assume and see what developments are possible and take
its course. This article was published March 2005 it is now December 2016, the years that have
passed are so far a result of technological change. Whos to say what will happen the year 2025;
we still have 9 years to go before we can say what the future will be like.

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

Introduction
How will technology change our lives in the next 20 years? Let us think back to
how much it has changed the world 20 years in the past. Technology is large all over the world.
This topic was chosen because of my interest in seeing what will the world will be like in the
next 20 or more. In movies we see the much technological advancement they display. These
resources and devices may not exist but they could be possibly in progress of being created. Not
only should we look towards what will be new but also how will it benefit us entirely. There
was a time that technology did not exist and now it has become the fastest growing industry.
Technology begins to progress every day; it has enhanced the workforce making businesses
more effective and efficient and has also brought the world closer together. We have evolved
from sending written letters to text messages, phone calls and face to face communication to
now using Skype and Facetime. Technological development has changed our schools,
businesses, governments, economy and the way we live. Large companys we know such as
Google, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung and more continue to create and innovate to not only make
money, but to better the world. So the question is, how much more will be done?

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

Technology Topic Exploration
The development of technology has no doubt brought up the good and bad in the
world today. In the earlier years it was all face to face communication, a lot more engagement
between us people. However, if we evaluate how our communication level is today, we wouldve
noticed it has dropped. We are often controlled by our phones, laptops, video games, internet and
more. I was born at the time type writers were basically extinct. As a child I grew up using
computers with box monitors and large CPUs. Now that I am older, Im more engaged with a
laptop which does everything. Technology started quite big in size, as evolution took over it has
become smaller, faster and more efficient. According to Ian Pearson in his article The Next 20
Years in Technology: Timeline and Commentary, he states that The future looks different in
many ways, but some things won't change (Pearson, 2000). I can agree with this statement
because despite the drastic change, human characteristics will still be intact. Not much about
people can change, except our mindsets, and choices. When we think of the future our minds
become optimistic and at times our minds go beyond what we arent sure we are capable of. The
faster more new technology is implemented to the world; it is the quicker things become
outdated. The year 2016 and we no longer use phones that have actual buttons, now we have a
virtual keypad. This is how fast we have evolved from basic to advanced.
If we look at how technology improves a business place we could talk about
notifying the whole company through one email, or how businesses are able to contact overseas
companies to negotiate with one another. Also the ways groups are able to function and work just
like a network. Technology has improved convenience and it does not necessarily apply to the
workplace alone. Improving technology will revolutionize the way we do business and earn our
living (Pearson, 2000) New jobs are being created just by having new gadgets; it will continue
7

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

make new jobs for younger generations. Since we are in a more developed time, we find that
Robotics is starting to take all the attention. It includes electrical and mechanical engineering.
Car manufacturing companies are perfect examples of this; instead of having people to work they
use machines that function by a calculation and processes. These machines create vehicles, we
find that productions are more efficient and it is much quicker. Only a few people will be
needed to staff our agricultural and manufacturing industries, and most of today's service
industries will be automated to a large degree (Pearson, 2000). Technology hasnt only
benefited businesses in how they function but also in security. It isnt so easy to break into bank
no matter the size and the number of people who work in them. However this does not mean
hacking isnt a possibility. Technology does have its perks but there is always an obstacle to leap
over. This is how far we have come in excelling in improving businesses; if youve noticed when
businesses are hiring people they always expect or require that you have some knowledge with
technological equipment.
The medical field has changed from what it used to be, technology has helped
with finding and creating cures, research, creating new devices, and so much more. The
healthcare today has made people live much longer, more comfortable and healthier. Not only
has that but due to medical technology, people now faced a higher chance of restoration.
Michael Barbellas article Preferred circulation: the advancement of minimally invasive
technologies is fueling growth of the global interventional medical device market refers to
Earnest Tate. He was an elderly individual who faced a medical setback, in having a narrowed
aortic Valve which began to have greater impact as he lived on with it. The surgery he lived
through was critical, Cardiologists resolved this issue by the replacement of his valve with a
man-made aortic valve. Now Earnest Tate is better than ever (Barbella, 2016). After reviewing
8

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

this article, I realized that medical technology has allowed us to formulate ways in which we can
solve specific problems. Furthermore, I believe that technology has definitely affected us for the
better in the medical field. Ian states that Medical technology is improving rapidly, too, and by
2020 new babies can expect to live well over 100 years and perhaps to 130 (Pearson, 2000). We
have seen and heard about people that are living over the ages of 95 years and up, so who says it
isnt possible for us to possibly reach 130 years of age. Here is an interesting statement Ian
further mentions, In fact, for a while, life expectancy will increase faster than people get older
(Pearson, 2000). There is no doubt that we have proof of this, there are people who look younger
than their age and taking more action than a normal person that age could do.
All of what we thought was impossible has now become possible and more of a
reality. Due to the evolution of technology, I believe that innovators, scientists, futurists,
technologists, and more test the limits of technology. According to Thomas Eastons Taking
sides, clashing Views in Science, Technology and Society, he claims that Optimists focus on
the benefits of technology and are confident that we will be able to cope with any problems that
arise (Easton, 2010). They are now focusing on trying to make the impossible come to life. So
much has changed over the years, there was a time where people read books but now people
focus on virtual reading. Social media has taken over the world and has no doubt brought
everyone closer than we ever. There is Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and more that we
use on a daily basis to connect with others and also entertain ourselves. Sometimes on television
movies and TV shows depict what is to come in the near future even in the long term. Video
games have upgrade from just controller to the screen. We step closer and closer into virtual
reality. Nathan Olivarez Giles Virtual reality is taking its time becoming a consumer reality
says Innovators working on virtual reality say advancements this year will set up the technology
9

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

for meaningful consumer traction as early as 2016 (Giles, 2015). Xbox and PlayStation, the two
biggest game systems today figure out ways to top one another. Think about how we travel every
day, in our cars there are GPS systems that help navigate our direction they also apply television
for entertainment. Travelling by flights, they make sure that lengthy flights are as enjoyable and
as comfortable as possible. With the inclusion of technology what we do and how we do things
on a daily basis becomes easier, sometimes time consuming activities take less of a time. So
would this mean in the near future technology will increase the speed of what we do? Speaking
of time, we have clocks that just tell time. Then we went further into making watches which is
with us all the time, but now we have wrist watches that do more than just tell time. You
mightve thought of this as some cool secret spy type of thing, but now it is what exists. The
examples given are just small portions of what have been created and enhanced. The computers
of 2020 won't look like those today; most of the time we won't see them. They will be
ubiquitous but invisible, hidden in infrastructure and in almost every device around us (Pearson,
2000). Despite most of Ians views, I could agree that most of the ideas that gave been tested and
applied could possibly happen.
Another field that has felt the change in technology is education. Teachers and
school board members implement a way that students are able to learn. Being in primary school I
was used to black boards and document camera projectors .Stepping up into middle school I was
used to white boards and colored markers. Further into middle school they applied smart boards
which teachers used to teach classes. Around this time they actually thought about ways in which
students learn. 8 ways technology is improving Education by Sarah Kessler, she states
Technology is helping teachers to expand beyond linear, text-based learning and to engage
students who learn best in other ways (Kessler, 2010). As long as technology is still flowing
10

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

education will be reinforced more. Various schools do question adding more technology to
schools and though it may not be a good result, it is a good way of pushing students to learn.
Students will attend key lectures via the Net, or learn by experience, interacting with
simulations in advanced computer systems (Pearson, 2000). This statement could be supported,
in the new era schools provide online courses and programs for students. Just like online courses
are available, reading from textbooks, homework assignments and more have been set. In other
words schools are taking advantage of the technological resources. So could this mean that
schools could perhaps close down in the near future? Courses in school could possibly become
more complex in specific areas, for example information technology, you normally learn the
basics of where computers began. They also teach about binary numbers, however while
technology progresses information technology will eventually add new requirements and what
we learn will start seem particularly different.

The San Francisco Experience
I gained my own opportunity in going on a seminar which was based on
technology and society. This experience gave me the chance to explore a different environment
and get other peoples perspective on technology and society. It was my first time going to San
Francisco; this was a school seminar with a group of 18 people. They were my colleagues for the
trip and we went to several business lectures listening to from Google, SB architect, Chain and
more. Each person gave us a review of what there institution or company does and how they help
the society and furthermore, how they impact the world. , San Francisco was the best choice of
destination. Our first lecture began with Sean Randolph which is the Senior Director of Bay Area
Council Economic Institute. Sean focused on the Bay Area Innovation System; this institution
speaks to its members on the issues of the economy and acts as an advocate for community
resources (Randolph, 2016). This company also collaborates with Europe and vast amount of
Europeans pass through this organization. This institution works towards benefiting the
community while the community while avoid negatively affecting the environment. An example
Sean gave was the greenhouse project, they are trying to promote electric cars while getting
people out of gas cars (Randolph, 2016). Failure in their eyes is more of a learning experience
and an opportunity to do better.
We extended our journey for another lecture at Rocketspace where we met the
Ecosystem General Manager, Mark Weiss. It is due to Mark Weisss actions why 750 tech startups were launched which employed one to 100 people. Mr. Weiss did also mention that Uber is
one of their best clients he has worked with (Weiss, 2016). RocketSpace actually began in the
year 2011 and they have over 150 company start-ups. RocketSpace started as a startup company
and now helps others startup. They also receive from about 40 to 50 other companies each week
12

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

there could potentially 30 Rocket Spaces worldwide. Rocketspace is considered the home of
start-ups in the whole Bay Area. RocketSpace is a company that works with many others in order
to reach at the success level they wish to be at. One good example was Uber, this business began
with 8 people but now it has expanded into a successful business. RocketSpace benefits other
business by promotion and contribution. I could also admit that we had enjoyed the view from
the roof where we had this lecture.
After our lectures we had the chance to attend the public library of San Francisco
where we took our break to work on our reflection papers and discussions. I personally liked the
library; it is large containing multiple floors and various sections of books including computers.
Our last lecture for the day was at Chain, we met Jill Carlson who is part of Business
Development and Partner Lead. Chains aim is to digitize the worlds assets so values move as
fast as data. (Carlson, 2016). Chain Core is enterprise-grade blockchain infrastructure that
enables organizations to build better financial services from the ground up (Chain, n.d.). Chain
specializes in using the Blckchain technology, which relates to the transactions and have multiple
chains filled with data. Throughout the time chain has been about, they have managed to gather
40 million dollars in all (Carlson, 2016). I admired the working facility and you could see that
they work as team which is why they have gained so much success. This is w ay to enhance
financial industries for the better through the technology that chain possesses. The lecture ended
and this was also our last meeting for the day.
Thursday November 10th at 7 a.m. my colleagues and I left early to go to
Google Global Headquarters which is located in Mountain View, California. We were well aware
from before leaving the Cayman Islands that Google Headquarters is a secure facility so we were
limited to only taking pictures outdoors and in the entrance area. Any further into Google was
13

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

restricted. However, arriving to Google HQ, I was amazed of the infrastructure and seeing the
diversity of nationalities that operate there. I was surely grateful to attend, at Google HQ we met
with Joe Demike, the Head of Business Operations (Demike, 2016) Joe Demike talked about
Googles Innovation and the way they function as team. Before his presentation he gave us a
short tour of outside the facility. Joe first gave his explanation of the statues, for example the
skeleton dinosaur. This artifact motivates them as a team and reminds them of the past
innovations that have been successful also a memory of the dinosaur age. This stood out to me
because this was an important point where we realize that we once came from a time from no
technology and less resources. Now we have reached into a more advanced timeline. As our
lecture started Joe Demike talks about the different departments at Google, these buildings are
the Android building, Search building, Google chrome and more. How they make a lot of their
money is interesting, they gain income through the advertisements that they apply online
(Demike, 2016). They also make sure that they advertise things that are applicable to our
searches and also our interest. People all over the world are able to search and make purchases
through the ads that are offered. What is really amazing is that Google is a successful company
that doesnt necessarily provide a product; it is more like an online service. Millions of people
use Google everyday making high rates of searches. Joe Demike also covered the area on failure
which reminded me of Sean Randolph. Joe states that Fast is better than slow (Demike, 2016).
In other words the faster your ideas are out is the quicker and more time you have to fix, change
and make a product better. Failure means that there is room for improvement; I could agree that I
learnt a lot from this lecture and our journey continued further into learning more.
After our day spent at Google our journey took us to SB Architects. Before this
meeting I considered Google as the most enjoyable experience, however I was wrong. Going to
14

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

SB Architects was more of an interesting time spent. Scott Lee which is the President/Principal
was the main lecturer. Mickey Mazerac the Senior Associate accompanied him as well. One
thing that came as a surprise to me was that this team was the original designers of the Kimpton
Seafire Resort located in West Bay behind Seven Mile Beach. This is a far different experience
of a hotel compared to the other hotels that are currently on the island. Before this hotel we
would have known Ritz-Carlton to be on top. Scott lee gave us an overview of what SB
architects does. They like to create great experiences for clients (Lee, 2016). Scott Lee
displayed a short time lapse video of the Kimpton being built from foundation. This hotel gives a
better view of the ocean which. Mickey Mazerac also gave us a demonstration of how they start
to design the hotel from scratch. He showed us ways in which he is able to give us a design that
looked more realistic. This turned out to be the last experience for day 3 of the seminar.
Friday, November 11th our next lecture was at the University of San Francisco. We
met with Professor Al-Abdullah, which presented on technology in business. He gave different
examples of new technology and also what we could expect in the years to come. These
examples consisted of the self-driven car; machine Learning, Tri-Coders, 3d printers and App
Moodies What I found most interesting is the App Moodies (Abdullah, 2016). It is an app that
detects your mood; this would be very useful in the criminal sector. Normally people are trained
to read face expression and fidgety behavior in order to determine a situation but now things
have gotten easier. The Professor continues and refers to bit coin and money which he states
Bitcoins are the new generations way of using money (Abdullah, 2016).The idea behind
bitcoin is block chains which are chains of database transactions. An example he gives of a
company that uses bitcoin is Amazon. Professor Abdullah also states that the positive side to
bitcoin is that each transaction is saved in a block (Abdullah, 2016). Through the presentation the
15

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

professor gave many valid points on technology. While this first lecture ended we took our leave
to get a quick tour of the universities library which holds many areas.
Our next stop was at the School of management where we met with Kevin Lo
who is the Chair of the Department. We also had the privilege in meeting with the Dean, Liz
Davis. Kevin Lo which was our lecturer talked about organizational behavior which has to do
with ethics and employee actions and more. His points were valid; these points could also be
reinforced in any organization which could help them to achieve goals. We further got
information from to other individual giving us the benefits and advantages of attending the
school of management. They gave sections pertaining to the bachelors and Masters degree.
Folders were distributed to us with the information, this was a way of advertising opportunities
for us to capture.
One of the experiences I was looking forward to was our day of service at project
open hand. This organization is a non-profit organization that helps to assist the sick and the
homeless. There serve people who are sick with aids, cancer, diabetes and more. Elliot Steinbach
received us at the facility; we got a short preview of what the organization is about and how they
impact their community. Project open hand was discovered in the year 1985 and they are
dedicated to cater to the elders and those around them who struggle. Their website states Every
day, we prepare 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain
our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging (Project
Open Hand, n.d.). I enjoyed my time being able to assist this team; you can sense the passion
from those who work in this organization. Their mission is also to nourish and engage our
community by providing meals with love to the sick and the elderly (Project Open Hand, n.d.).
Throughout the day we were split in two separate groups, my group filled two racks full of
16

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

lunches filled with freshly cooked meals. Eventually we were transferred to the next section
where they bag the meets and packed food to be placed in the fridges. I also learned the grocery
shopping; each individual who comes gets a sheet to place their order of what foods they want to
take. Once they have ticked what they want, we gather their groceries and distribute them. I was
very much impressed by how organized and they were. They operate together and work with the
time. I see this as something that could be applied in the Cayman Islands, we are never sure how
much people are sick and homeless in our own community and I see Project Open Hand as I big
help and a true motivator to many people.

17

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

Application of the Learning
Throughout the seminar I learnt enough that I could apply to myself and to my
future plans. My time at SB Architects, talking with Mickey Mazerac definitely helped me
decide my next step with my studies for school. He helped me realize that I could open my
options wider than I previously planned. I also learned about innovation and creating ideas in
order to gain feedback for improvement. Failure is only one step forward to getting perfection,
which I understand is a way we can progress. I can apply all the encouraging words that we have
gained from each lecture to my future plans. Going to Google, I was able to see how a company
functions with diversity and also holding their employees as important people. If the employees
of an organization are happy then it benefits the business. So becoming a young entrepreneur, I
was able to learn effective leadership amongst the speakers.
Project Open Hand had a great impact on me and how we could help the
community. Our community in the Cayman Islands is fast paced, we are also very modern yet
throughout the movements we fail to see the details in the picture. We are unaware of the many
people who could be struggling and if they are even fortunate enough to take care of themselves.
We could apply an organization similar to Project Open hand in the Cayman Islands. The
question is how do we help our own society? All the time I spent in San Francisco showed new
paths and directions that I could not only better myself in what I want to do but also my own
community.

18

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

Limitations
Our visit to San Francisco was great; however one of my limitations was the lack
of emphasis on new technology. I do have an interest in seeing new models of technology which
was one of my goals. Before we left Grand Cayman, I wrote down a list of things I wouldve
loved to have seen. At some point I had the idea that this wouldnt be possible. For example at
Google they are very protective of their resources which I understood, so restrictions were
necessary. Also I would have liked to go deeper into learning about how they came about putting
ideas and how they actually started the process in the new technology that was talked about by
Joe Demike and Muhammad Al Abdullah. An area I didnt accomplish was having a one-on-one
talk with a few of the lecturers and gaining their input on some views that I had. I also hoped to
have asked more questions, this way I am able to gain a better understanding. However, to
achieve these goals and recover from what I have missed; I believe deeper research about some
of the things I wanted know would be of benefit to me. With a lot more reading and searching the
web will bring me up to speed and at the level of understanding where I wish to reach. Keeping
up with what is new today allows us to stay up to date. The world of technology can be complex
and fast but also interesting. Another unfulfilled goal I had was getting my personal view of the
Golden Gate Bridge; this opportunity was turned down because of my decision made to complete
other course work. A well-known bridge that we normally see on television, therefore the only
solution to see this would result in a second visit San Francisco. Aside from unachieved goals, I
got a chance with some unexpected experiences and learnt while being a part of it all.

Conclusion

19

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

In conclusion, throughout the seminar I realized that a lot of these organizations
take failure as a learning process and see it as an advantage. Naturally we see this as a letdown
but I noticed that successful individuals are more eager for failure. Technology will always get
better and society may change because of this. This experience mattered because Grand Cayman
is a smaller environment and we are limited in most areas. So it was relevant to go a place which
has more exposure, San Francisco is huge and had many aspects to offer both in the area of
technology and society. I can surely say that the world is way bigger than we think and I am
more aware that there could be so many changes far ahead from what we know or thought of.
The seminar also capitalized on my career path and has made more options for my original plan.
Whatever my colleagues and I gained can be applied to our daily lives, and i believe I am more
confident about how to pursue goals, my career and more. Being able t go to Google was an
amazing opportunity, not many people gain this chance which is why it matters. Overall it was
very informative, learning something new each day was a major advantage and we are more sure
about the standards are competitors operate at. This seminar definitely tied into my research in
how our lives could be changed in the next 20 years. The lecturers provided many examples of
ideas that have been put in place in order to direct us into a new era of technology and society.
Could we say that the world will be better once things have drastically evolved? As we know in
the past, people we unsure of what of events would take place but enough years have passed to
show how far and we have come. The San Francisco experience gave me a the upper hand in
seeing how the world works on a larger scale, there are people that work every day in order to
solve problems in the world. These problems could be big or small; every situation can change
for the better or the worst. Technological changes will likely have its impact on society and as
expected it will have its both positives and negative effects. However, nothing created by man is

20

Running Head: HOW WILL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE OUR LIVES IN 20 YEARS?

perfect and they have their downfalls. That is why technology becomes obsolete and in my
opinion because of daily developments technological devices gadgets will be inferior.
