Boot philosophy

Bootlegs
•52-53 and 56-57 are “Bootlegs,” meaning we are going to fake a run in one direction, and roll the QB opposite the fake! These are excellent plays against LBs who overpursue against our best running plays! •All receivers use the same route rules for all 50 series passes (Post, Over, Pin Flat, Go Pocket)! Frontside receivers are those lined up to the side of the fake (right on even last digits such as 52 and 56, left on odd last digits); Backside recievers are those aligned away from the fake even though the QB will be working in their direction! •52-53 is a fake of the 42-43 Zone play! QB & FB will carry out a great 42-43 fake! All linemen will REACH to the call! •56-57 is a fake of the 16-17 Trey play! QB R will carry out a great 16-17 fake! All linemen except FSG & FST will REACH to the call! FSG pulls and “logs” the backside End, while the FST executes a Punch technique! TAGS/VARIATIONS

KEYS to a successful play:
• GREAT fakes! RB rolls over ball & sells it, QB follows w/eyes! • Linemen PREVENT PENETRATION across the board! • PIN ARROW is patient and handles the BSDE before releasing!

QB: Understand that you have no “PIN ARROW” security to the side you’re booting (which is why we normally run it as 56-57, to give you a pulling G escort), so you have to snap your head around extra quick with the idea of breaking contain immediately (if EMOL closes) or pulling up quickly inside an upfield rush. The Drag essentially takes the place of the Pin Arrow in your progression. Throw to him if he’s open, based on eye contact; work the Over if he’s invaded from behind, the Comeback if invaded from outside.

H (BF/Slot): You will be used as a backside player. Use (BF/Slot): Inside receiver rules (PIN ARROW). BS Middle & Outside: “3” or “Backside 3” tells you to act like frontside receivers on a “3” route. From some kind of squeezed alignment, the Middle man will run a “WRAP POST,” and the Outside man a “WRAP CORNER.” By Game Plan we can have you briefly fake a “Cross” block by dropping your hips, showing your hands, and hesitating on the way to your course.

Pre-read 9 tech threats!

R: Pre-snap read for 9 tech threat. SELL 44-45 with flat bottom hand, SNAP over ball, carry out course East-West behind the line. If you see a 9 tech threaten outside widest blocker, abort course & block. If no rush after fake, sit in flat as an outlet. QB: Step to normal 44-45 course, extending ball after 1st step, off hand trailing. Should get to RB on 3rd step, snap head & chest down on 4th step as RB rolls over the ball to hide it, snapping ball back into chest. 3 more steps after fake, find read key, usually Jack. If Jack’s feet stop or come up, 3 ball the Post into the open void. If Jack stays high, work Seam Read to Drag (if you have one) to back in Flat.
- C l i c k h e r e t o

OL: Play Action Reach. Hinge back as you eye LB if not engaged after 3rd step. FS Ins/TE: STOP/SETTLE - 13 yds. Best available release-inside if in doubt. Attack vertically, eyeballing near safety. Execute hard Stop route at 13, accelerating back to 11. If not chased, ‘settle’ at 12-13, work laterally to open area. MAX call keeps any FS TE/Slot/Wing player in to block frontside Reach rules. FS Outs: POST PUMP. V. Press CB, briefly fake stalk-show hands/buzz feet/drop hips-- without stopping. Inside release v. press CB; ‘tease’ release v. a soft CB to his outside shoulder--keep at least 5 yd cushion. At 10 yds or when the cushion closes, drive hard to the corner for 3 steps at full speed—distinctly turn your head outside to ‘show your ear’ and Get CB’s hips turned!! Drop your pads & lunge at turned!! the top of your break, then burst to the Post off outside foot. H (BF/Slot): If in backfield, sell Stretch & block 9 (BF/Slot): technique. If Slot/Wing BS, Play Action Reach. If rec. use receiver rules for your position in the route.

51 TRAP PASS v. “Split”
1 2
Anyone in a receiver position: ROUTE as called by name. E.g. “50 Slant” or “51 Vertical”, etc. FS is indicated by last digit (0-FS Right, 1-FS Left) FS TE: ROUTE as called by name.

TRAP PASS BASICS

M E T

S T

R E
•“Punch” •Hinge back with DEPTH if no threat

Come under control as you approach the T’s edge… Kick step him upfield if he comes hard, keeping shoulders perpendicular... Happy Dog’ him into the pile if he squeezes or sits

*On the Frontside, responsibilites for GAPS and DEFENDERS are basically the same as 16-17; FST has B gap, FSG A gap, C backside A gap. Someone from the frontside will be responsible for BSLB if he shows in either A gap! *On the BACKSIDE, assignments generally mirror 46-47. BSG pulls for FS EMOL, BS T & TE ‘Punch’ to their inside Gap & then hinge back. *1st step for everyone but BSG is an inside POWER STEP! *The only thing that beats this protection is PENETRATION. To stop penetration, all linemen must: 1. CUT SPLITS to 12-18 inches squeeze the gaps down 2. KEEP SHOULDERS SQUARE 3. TWIST PENETRATORS INTO THE PILE in front of us *Technique is similar to run, BUT we cannot block downfield. On ‘Combo’ calls, take 4 eyes to LB,step off along LOS if he shows! *This is a big-play waiting to happen if we sell run! LOW HATS!

BS TE/Slot/Wing/Anyone in 3/4/Crazy motion Backside!: PUNCH. POWER STEP to C gap, Hinge back to EMOL with LOW HAT. Eye any potential C gap slanters/blitzers pre-snap. Gain great depth after insuring C gap, make EMOL rush upfield. Call ‘2 man’ if you have two DL threats on/outside. R: Pre-snap read FSLB…if he’s showing as a threat, abandon the fake and sprint to meet/block him. Offset AWAY from the call as on 32-33, run 32-33 course, show exaggerated pocket, snap over it. After rolling over, pop eyes up to FSLB; if none, slide out & help pulling G on EMOL. QB: Take normal 32-33 steps, very short flash fake, eyes to your read as called by the route. The line & back handle the fake on this play; your focus is the read! If you get a ‘2 man’ call, either check out or be prepared to get ball off NOW.
- C l i c k h e r e t o

FS T: POWER STEP B GAP. Vs. a 3, call ‘Combo’ with G, double with him to BSLB, unless he gives you a ‘B’ ‘B’ call in return, in which case, power step & twist the 3 tech into the pile. If you have a two-man rule, call ‘Base’, base the inside of the two men with a 90-190 pass set. FS G: POWER STEP A GAP. Eyes up for any immediate A gap slants/blitzes. If uncovered, ‘Combo’ with C to BSLB. CENTER: POWER STEP A GAP. Eyes up for threats!

BS G: PULL & BLOCK FS E.M.O.L. Pull step hard past Center, finding E.M.O.L. with your eyes, come under control as you get to the edge of the protection. Keep shoulders perpendicular to L.O.S., work EMOL upfield. Alert BASE call. BS T: PUNCH. POWER STEP to B gap, Hinge back next DL with LOW HAT. Eye potential B gap slanters/blitzers presnap. Gain great depth after insuring gap, make EMOL rush upfield. r e t u r n t o P l a y A c t I o n
