winetasting
GOOD LOOKS
For an entertaining evening with friends, invite them over for an informal wine tasting. Create a warm and inviting atmosphere by using lots of rich colours, candlelight and different textures in terms of fabrics and flowers. Match the colour palette to that of the wine itself: different shades of purple and to add a bit of variety incorporate a bit of sunny yellow or chartreuse green.

DECORATIONS

Flickering Fire For a winter wine tasting, have the fireplace burning, if you do not have one, create the same look with a sideboard fill of pillar candles placed in jam jars. On each chair encourage guests to wrap up warmly, by having a blanket for them to wrap around their legs. Attach a tag „Snuggle while you sip“.
TABLE

Textured Table Set the table with a white tablecloth, and then for something different lay a table runner made in a textured fabric like a plaid/tartan design. Set each place setting with a linen napkin, and tie with ribbon or a paper napkin ring. Label each place setting with a place card slipped into a wine cork. White Tablecloth R30 for hire Table Runners R15 each for hire White Linen Napkins R5 each for hire

At each place setting set various glasses: - White wine glass - Red wine glass - Tumbler for water In the centre have a pitcher of water and a dump bucket, as well as an ice bucket of ice for white wine. Use coasters from the printable party for the bottles of wine and/or wine glasses. For a special touch use our aluminium wine coasters. On a stem of each wine glass attach one of our wine line tags or paper ones from the Printable Party. Wine Lines We’ve packed 12 different colour tags together as a party pack, and printed them in 4 amusing series - Wine Comments, - Wine Reviews - International Toasts - Euphemisms for feeling a little tipsy. R55 for a set of 12. TOP TABLE TIP: White wine should be placed in the fridge for at least 45 minutes, red wine is served at room temperature. Carafe Centrepieces For a table centrepiece take empty wine bottles and push in dinner candles (burn these before the party so that you get that dripped look). Empty wine bottles can also be decorated with custom labels. Add our additional vintage glass bottles and votives with either a few bud stems of purple flowers and tealights. Or for a „flower“ and „candle“ in one place groupings of our Capiz Shell Lotus Flower Votives.

MENU Wine & Dine A good idea to take the pressure off of buying all the wine is to ask guest to bring wine as well. Add one of the “Wine Notes” cards to the invitation and add details to the back. A fun way to do this is to give everyone a different region to choose from or ask your guests to bring different “varietals.” Varietals is a fancy word for each specific grape variety. Tell your guests to get something they normally wouldn’t drink. Make sure to set a price limit per bottle. Be sure to have crackers, fresh breads and cheese to help clean the palette between wines. If you want to take it up a notch, serve light hors d’oeuvres after the wine tasting. Use the food picks from the printable party to decorate the food platters. Atmosphere is key to a good party so make sure to set the mood so play some lounge music as background.

FUN AND GAMES Wine Tasting For an introductory tasting, compare six wines, three white and three red, each made from a different variety of grape. For the whites, try a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay, and a dry Riesling. For the reds, try a Pinot Noir, a Merlot, and a Cabernet Sauvignon. Ask the staff in a good wine shop to help you make representative choices in your price range. Print out our tasting cards from the Printable Party and set at each place setting together with a pens/ pencil for describing and recording each wine tasted. Some people like to cover wines with a paper bag so they are not revealed, however, you could also use the Printable Party numbered wine bottle labels or a nice fabric or ribbon to cover the labels. Use colours that coincide with your theme. Collect each scorecard at the end and tally up the scores. Announce the results.

TOP TABLE TIP 4-6 bottles of wine are average for wine tasting • 1 bottle will yield about 12 glasses per bottle. Lastly, be sure to have a list of the wines purchased and their price so your guests can have the option to purchase them in the future.

To complement our party, print out our Printable Party goodies: Wine Bottle Labels to hide the wine’s identity. Seating Place Cards Coasters in three different styles one for red wine, white wine and water. Wine Charms to decorate and identify wine glasses describing the wine like complex, immature, rich, supple, earthy, formidable, opulent, ripe, volatile, overpriced, sturdy, vintage. Taster Cards for guests to rate the wines. Food Picks to decorate cheese and food platters.

Table Topics

Let the conversation flow like an excellent Cabernet. At home or at the local wine bar, these thought-provoking questions are an irresistible paring with your favorite bottle of red (or white). • what’s the best accompaniment to a great bottle of cabernet • what’s your best memory of sharing a bottle with someone special • what’s the funniest thing that’s happened after a few glasses
FAVOURS

Send guests home with a bottle of wine or a small box of chocolates or simply a pre-printed and cut set of wine tags in a bag with a bag topper for their next wine tasting or dinner party. For chocolate favours, use the Printable Party custom wrappers around a standard small Dairy Milk Chocolate Bar. We love how it is worded and perfect for every girl to slip into her handbag. GOOD TO KNOW
COURTESY OF WIKIPEDIA

A napkin, or serviette is a rectangle of cloth or tissue paper used at the table for wiping the mouth while eating. It is usually small and folded. The word comes from Middle English, borrowing the French nappe—a cloth covering for a table—and adding -kin, the diminutive suffix.
Conventionally, the napkin is folded and placed to the left of the place setting, outside the outermost fork. In an ambitious restaurant setting or a caterer’s hall, it may be folded into more or less elaborate shapes and displayed on the empty plate. A napkin may also be held together in a bundle (with cutlery) by a napkin ring. Alternatively, paper napkins may be contained within a napkin holder. The napkin was invented by Madam Rebecca Waltemath, at her etiquette school for Formal Women in London, England around the 18th century.

“Okay!” Michelle of Cakewalk Baking admits it “I’m officially on the dessert table bandwagon. I’m no Amy Atlas, but I had so much fun putting this party together with the help of Ana Gonzales. We left the table design a little loose and deconstructed the pom-pom garland to create a less than perfect look. I love the look of the ornate vintage table with the modern light hanging above.”

GOOD LIFE
This Woodland Fairy Birthday Party designed by Kate Landers Events, LLC is in a word “magical”! Enjoy, as told by Kate: “The party took place in the “enchanted” wood and the colour scheme was a mix of natural browns and greens, soft creams and whites, with the birthday girl’s favourite colours of pink and red.

DECORATIONS We wanted a very whimsical feel, so strands of red felt mini bunting were strung casually along the tree branches near the table. TABLE The tablescape was created using a floor length chocolate brown table covering, custom made toad stools were used for seating (yes, red with white spotted pillow tops and ivory “stems” straight to the ground!), and tableware consisted of our favourite Rice melamine soft pink tumblers and plates, along with red flatware and green cloth napkins folded under each plate. The most precious trio of toadstools was created by the lovely Miss Jane, which served as the centerpiece. Simply charming! We created a darling wreath hung by beautiful double-faced pink satin ribbon to hang over the table, adding instant height and sort of pulling together the treetops and toadstools together! Each girl found their name on a darling printed tag (would make a charming cupcake topper too, I think!), inside their fairy garland on top of their plate.

DRESS UP As with all of my events, I like the children to be encouraged to use their imaginations, and this party was no exception. We wanted each guest to feel as if they were a woodland fairy themselves, so we had Henry & Grace Designs custom created fairy frocks, hair garlands and wands. The girls would find these hanging from the trees, standing in a green bubble-glass jug, hiding behind a rock in the woods, or even laying on their plate at the table...finding each piece of their own fairy costume was an activity in and of itself! Each fairy frock and garland was created using the same materials, all with the lovely green silk vines and pink flowers, but the colours of tulle and ribbon were all unique, so no two were ever exactly alike. Girls were also each given a pair of our whimsical fairy wings, and let me tell you once they were on, they didn’t come off!

57

58

DESSERT BUFFET The girls enjoyed the most spectacular fairy feast on a table we designed to mimic the enchanted forest floor. The table was covered with a green moss table runner, food was displayed on wooden “stumps” and personalised with wooden letters for the birthday girl, Elle. You will notice tall grass, bundles of twigs and flowers, and a couple of sparkling green butterflies, that almost blend right if it were not for their sparkled coating! The menu was all sweets, but with an earthy, fairy theme of course! Each girl was given a chocolate “bird’s nest” to eat out of - incredibly realistic looking and delicious! The nests also served as “bowls” for the “create your own trail mix” station. “Fairy Flakes”(coconut), “Chipmunk Chips” (banana), “Gnome-Made Granola”, “Wrinkled Grapes” and “Chocolate Drops” were among the selection of goodies for the girls to use to make their special mix. Other treats, such as pink “acorns” and “pink feather dust” were also available for the girls to nibble on during the party. Darling “Ladybugs” were crafted carefully out of apples and chocolate frosting and were definitely a favorite to look at by all the guests. “Snail Sandwiches” (created of strawberry cream cheese and jelly) and “Woodland Smores” (pre-melted smores served on a wooden “stump”) were other delightful treats guests enjoyed. Special white-chocolate (coloured pale pink) dipped strawberries added the birthday girl’s favorite colors of red and pink to the fairy feast, and a nest of “Fairy Berries” added beauty and natural texture to the table. Instead of a traditional birthday cake the birthday girl opted for cupcakes: pink frosted flowers, and deep raspberry-red “toadstools” with upside-down white chocolate chips. “Dandelion Milk” (Milk) was the beverage of choice, in chocolate, strawberry or plain, as all three matched the colour scheme of the party!

www.ingoodcompany.co.za |

59

FUN AND GAMES The toadstool cupcakes were also an activity. The girls were given a leaf-shaped bowl full of raspberry pink/red icing, a mini chocolate cupcake and mini white chocolate chips, where they could craft their own toadstool cupcake to enjoy or take home. A messy but fun activity and tasty treat! In addition to decorating their “toadstool cupcakes” they also were given little birdhouses to take home to decorate. Activities included “musical toad stools” using the same toad stools the girls sat on while at the table, and a dance around a “Fairy May Pole” (a natural wooden rod stuck in the ground, with long streaming ribbons carefully adhered at the top). The girls more than anything just enjoyed prancing around in circles, weaving around each other--not really making any sort of pattern at this young age, of course! Each guest was given a moss-covered basket in which they were to use to gather butterflies, acorns and flowers (faux flowers and butterflies, real acorns), most of which were hidden behind “fairy doors” at the bottom of trees. This was a lot of fun, but we made sure to have bags full of pre-allotted decorations and goodies already to go, in the event one girl ended up with fewer decorations than another.

FUN AND GAMES The fairy dust bottles were carefully displayed in a bell jar, to be handed out by an adult at the end of the party, for the girls to take home and use as a decoration in their room. Along with being allowed to leave the parties in their fairy costumes, they were given a copy of an enchanting fairy pop-up book customised with a small bookplate inside to remember the event. I was even given one of these books, and love it!

chocolatebirdnests
GOOD TASTE
“These chocolate bird nests are incredibly simple to make, and taste fabulous!” - Kate
INGREDIENTS Large shredded wheat biscuits (crumbled) Cooking chocolate DIRECTIONS You melt the chocolate over med high heat until all just melted, then pour carefully into bowl of shredded wheat biscuits. Wait for chocolate to cool (less than a minute) and prepare to get your hands dirty (food-safe gloves recommended)! Just mix together until it is very, very thick. Using parchment paper to line the inside of whatever shape you want your nests to be in (cupcake tin/bowl), take a large scoop and place on the parchment paper in that container. You will then press the mixture up against the sides and down against the bottom until it is in desired shape – may need to add more to thicken walls of nest. Let harden by leaving at room temp, or to speed up, put on cookie sheet and stick in the fridge for an hour or two. When done, carefully peel off parchment paper, and you have your yummy chocolate nest!

Tennis anyone? Even if you don’t play, no one can resist strawberries and cream. Invite guests over to watch the final or how about organising your own little mini round robin tournament. Whip up some cucumber sandwiches and Pimm cocktails and you are ready for game, set and match.
