Abstract
OBJECTIVES: Thisstudyinvestigatedtherelationshipbetweendentalcariesandthesalivary
StreptococcusmutansspecificantibodiesinDownsyndromechildren.
METHODS: NineteenchildrenwithDownsyndromeand41normalchildrenaged817yearswere
selected.Theoralhealthstatus(dentalcariesexperience,pitandfissuredepth,dentalarchspace,and
SimplifiedOralHygieneIndex)wasexaminedandunstimulatedsalivawascollected.Thetotalsalivary
immunoglobulinA(IgA)andS.mutansspecificsalivaryIgAconcentrationsweremeasuredusingELISA.
RESULTS: Thedecayedandfilledsurfaceindexofthedeciduousteeth,andthedecayed,missing,and
filledsurfacesindexofthepermanentteethinDownsyndromechildrenweresignificantlylower
comparedtothoseinnormalchildren.ThesalivaryS.mutans(serotypegandc)specificIgA
concentrationsweresignificantlyhigherinDownsyndromechildrenthaninthenormalchildren.There
wasnosignificantdifferenceinthetoothcharacteristicsandoralhygienebetweenthetwogroups.
CONCLUSIONS: ThelowcariesprevalenceinDownsyndromechildrenappearstobeduetoimmune
protectioncausedbytheelevatedsalivaryS.mutansspecificIgAconcentrations.
