. Weeks before Christmas, they were showing the latest polls on who bought gifts on Black Friday? and how big is your Christmas tree? Bryan just shook his head as Al Rocher gave his two cents on the Christmas issues. Bryan looked at his watch. It was about 6:30 PM, and soon his girlfriend, Tess would be coming back from her work. Bryan didn t really know what she did exactly, but what ever it was, it bought the apartment and a new car as well. He thought that maybe it had to do with marketing, but he didn t know what she was promoting. They had met about a year and a half ago in the summer. They had been sitting next to each other at a Lakers game when the Lakers went up against the Supersonics. Bryan was rooting for the Supersonics, while Tess was a huge Lakers fan. They were there with their best friends and soon there was a heated argument between Bryan s friend and Tess friend. Bryan got in the middle and Tess called him a pansy for trying to break up the fight, and Bryan just laughed at Tess remark. About a week later they were dating and couldn t be happier. Bryan looked at a photo taken about a year ago. Tess and him were skating near the park, and they both had huge smiles on their faces, you know, genuine smiles. His hair was longer back then and his goatee was far more profound. Now his hair was far shorter, ever since he moved into the real world and his would have been gone. However, since he had a couple weeks off from work for the holiday season, he decided to let it grow into stubble, giving him a rugged look. He looked intently at the smile in the picture as if he was confused about his past self. He remembered back in high school that he read Picture of Dorian Gray and remembered how powerful pictures actually were. What a crock of crap though, he thought. Humans are far too complex to be affected by supernatural powers. Bryan didn t even really believe in God, but he still went to church sometimes in order to be what one would call, a diet coke catholic. He was distracted by a feeling on his thigh and realized that it was his phone vibration. He reached into his jeans pocket and pulled his slider out to check the number. It was Chuck, his best friend from college. Back in college, Bryan would spend hours in the computer labs writing papers, while Chuck would be writing computer programs. You see, Chuck was into computer science whereas Bryan was into English. They would constantly rag on each other in the labs and soon couldn t be separated from one another. People even thought that they were brothers, if not for the fact that Bryan was a Polish blonde, and Chuck was an Irish ginger. Chuck was the one who got into the argument with Tess friend and the reason why Bryan was in a relationship. Bryan slid his phone open to take the call. Hello? Bryan asked into his ruby phone. Bry-man whats happening? he heard on the other end. Not too much Chuck just watching some news, you know the usz. There was a slight pause on the other end. Wow! That sounds riveting! You alone over there? Bryan looked confused into the phone. Yeah? Why?
Ok so get this. I found out from one of my buds at work that Deluge was having a huge xmas party and entrance is free! Bryan had a little smile on his face. Deluge was a club that Bryan and Chuck went to several times while in college and still went sometimes after graduation. They would usually pregame before hand and one time even did speed at the club. Bryan didn t remember much from the night, but everyone had stories about him that night. Bryan was intrigued by Chuck s idea. So are you gonna come to Deluge with me or not man? Bryan thought for a second and at first felt that he should wait for Tess to come home in order to see if she wanted to go as well then again, the other side of him kinda wanted just a guys night to have some fun. In the end, the latter won out. Ok I m in. What time do you want to go? Meh, I was thinking you come over to my place and we can drink a bit before we head out maybe even order a pizza or two like old times. Bryan remembered all those college nights eating Papa Murphys pizzas till the wee hours of the morning. God those were damn good pizzas, and they were great cold you know, for hangovers. Bryan agreed. Ok I ll be over there in a bit. Bryan slid the phone closed and put the device near his mouth, and began to nibble at it. It was frightening how he felt that he was losing romantic interest in Tess, but he looked at the picture on the coffee table, and was convinced, that either he was crazy, or the person in the picture was a different person completely. Chuck s House Bryan was cold outside Chuck s house. Although he lived in Los Angeles, this winter seemed the coldest one in a long while. The weatherman was even calling for snow before Christmas day. Every breath he exhaled could be seen, a notion that didn t seem to lighten his mood. He looked up at Bryan s house. It was brown with rickety shutters on the windows and a white wooden porch at the front. Bryan could remember the summers when him and Chuck would sit on the porch and drink two-buck chucks . That was back in college, before the real world showed its ugly head. The steps to the porch were incredibly crappy, and would collapse through due to weight. Someday some fat man is going to break you in, Bryan thought staring at the wooden steps, and we are all going to laugh. Bryan smiled in the cold and looked at the front door. It was a white wooden door. To show how lazy Chuck was, the screen door was still in place in December but to his credit Bryan wouldn t have done it either. Bryan had got the house after his mom died of a heart attack halfway through college. She was a saint of a woman, always watching for us. It was one of the worst things to happen to Chuck. To the tell the truth, Bryan thought the house was in ruin because it reminded Chuck of his mother, but he would never say that to his best friend. Bryan grabbed and the brass handle and turned it. Not surprising, it was unlocked. Chuck didn t really believe in high-class security. His version of high-class security was a baseball bat in the kitchen, and a golf driver under his bed. Bryan saw him once pull it out one night when we had heard noises from the alley nearby. Chuck didn t really live in a bad neighborhood; in fact it was one of the nicer areas in
Los Angeles suburbia. However, that s no reason to rule out the fact that neighborhoods all over suburbia were getting rough around the edges. Bryan walked into the foyer, but no one was around. Bryan stepped further looking for Chuck, he thought that maybe he was in the bathroom or something. Suddenly, a young man burst out of a corridor brandishing a Louisville Slugger in hand, shouting. Fuck you, you damn spick! Whoa! Chuck it s me, Bryan! The man lowered the bat and a huge smile came over his face. Chuck had an interesting figure about him. He had red hair and freckles, and an orange goatee. He was definitely Bryan s opposite. But that was the weirdest encounter Bryan had ever gotten from Chuck. Bryan had walked on him and a girl they had met one night at the club, and walked in on Chuck s porn night which Bryan had never known were Thursday s around 9 PM, but never anything like this. What has gotten into you? You re acting like WWIII is taking place in your neighborhood. And don t call them spicks. Neighborhoods don t go bad because of ethnicities. Besides there aren t any Hispanics in your area. Always the humanist and philanthropist, eh? Chuck put the bat down and hand-hugged Bryan. This was the Chuck he knew and loved. He wasn t racist, just scared, like most of the urban population of LA. Man you have no idea. You know the liquor store down the street from here? Well, cops reported that it had been broken into by a couple of Hispanics or Mexicans, they didn t really know. But I don t want to take any chances. Bryan just smiled and shook his head. So when are we getting pizza and junk? Chuck brushed imaginary dust off his shoulder. Already done, mi compadre. We just got to cook em, and enjoy. Oh, and I got your favorite and mine as well. Bryan s face lit up. You got the supreme, and the Cowboy? Chuck just nodded and grinned. Nice! So what should we do while they cook? Beer and blunts? Bryan shook his head. Maybe back in college but not now, besides he wanted to save his energy for the dance club. How about Halo and high-balls? Ok, ok let s do it. I ll go make us some drinks and you set up the system. I have the ps2 set up right now so you ll have to switch out the cords. Chuck strutted into the kitchen and out of sight. Madden im guessing? Bryan yelled from the living room. You know it! a voice called back. Bryan smiled as he set up the xbox. Chuck had an old school RCA that he had back in college. While students were protesting on campus, him and Chuck were playing burnout ; that was their idea of anarchy. Set up! Bryan yelled Pizza s in! the voice called back. Chuck walked back into the living room. You ready to get your ass kicked? Bryan just looked at Chuck. Please? Chuck s House
