The market indices settled the day lower as
banking stocks fell on worries their
profitability would be hit after most banks
reduced lending rates. The Sensex settled the
day at 26,595, down 31 points, while the
broader Nifty50 ended at 8,179, down 6
points.
The New Year has started on a flat note post a
smart rally last week. Auto sector was in the
limelight given the limited losses in monthly
numbers compared to the general consensus.
Currently investors are awaiting the kick start
of quarter earnings to evaluate the pressure on
profitability.

stake in the flagship asset of Gujarat State Petroleum
Corporation (GSPC) will be without a debt takeover.
GSPC has Rs 20,038 crore of loans (from about 15 banks)
on its books on account of the Deendayal Upadhyaya
block’s discovery in the Krishna-Godavari basin. The
Gujarat government-owned company has been under the
lens of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India
(CAG) for incurring this huge debt. With this $1.2-billion
(Rs 8,160 crore) deal.

Navy Cut, Gold Flake price hike may hit ITC's sales:
The decision by ITC to increase the retail prices of its two
best-selling brands – Navy Cut and Gold Flake – by 14%
could dent sales in the near term as smokers might switch
over to other brands. This comes at a time when cigarette
sales are already aggravated by demonetisation. According
to cigarette retailers across the country, sales of these two
brands have declined 20-30% after the price hike but
uncertainty over future sales volume looms in the era of
demonetisation.
