HARPLEY War Memorial: Many will have noticed that the village war memorial
is in need of some attention. It is a specialist job to remove the algae, which is on
and in the marble of the obelisk, and to repair or replace the lead lettering. Over the
last two years slow progress has been made in seeking firms to complete the work;
A grant application has been submitted to the War Memorials Trust, together with
two quotes, each of about 2,500. The most the WMT will grant is 75% of the cost
and we should hear the result sometime in January. Unfortunately even with the
maximum grant there will still be 500 to 600 to raise to fund the renovation.
The WMT asks for a history of the memorial: It was designed and erected by AF
Holman of Kings Lynn, and dedicated by the Bishop of Thetford on Saturday, Nov
20th, 1920 with a report in the newspaper the following Tuesday; Mrs Beck, the
Rectors wife unveiled it. Anyone with further information about the memorial or
the men commemorated is invited to contact the editor: 01485 521866

Thank you to everyone who helped to make the

Christmas events and services so successful:

St Marys Christmas Fayre raised about 800.

Children at Harpley School donated 88.30 in

their candle boxes and the Christingle collection
was 43, so 160 has been sent to the Childrens
Society from Harpley.
(Gt Massingham figures not yet available).
At St Lawrences Carol Service donations came to
109, and 100 will be sent to the Yemeni appeal.

Christmas Day at St Lawrences saw a large

congregation enjoying Revd Judiths sermon and
joining in with sound effects. The collection of
263 has enabled the church to send a donation of
50 to Embrace ~ the middle eastern charity that
supplies us with the (free) Bethlehem carol sheets.
