Message From Presidente Dayton

What Gift Will YOU Bring the Savior?
During our December 2016 Missionary Leadership Council (Concilio) on Monday, the
leadership of the mission enthusiastically endorsed and supported a proposed
initiative for the entire mission entitled, “What Gift Will You Bring the Savior” at
Christmas time. Our charge and our challenge is to invite every single companionship
in this mission to either baptize a person/family in December or find a family in
December that will be baptized in January as your gift to the Savior this Christmas
season. Inherent in this charge or challenge is the idea that we would work just a little
harder, be just a little more obedient, plan just a little more effectively, follow the Spirit
more carefully than ever, and show by our perfect use of time our love for the Master
during this special season of the year.
As we think about Christmas time and the beautiful spirit of the season, we are all
reminded that it is a time of giving. We have all experienced the sweet tradition of
gift-giving in our homes and have always enjoyed both the excitement in the eyes of
the receiver as they open the present and the giver who is hoping it is something
pleasing and something the receiver will enjoy. I remember so many times receiving
wonderful, perfect gifts which I received from someone who really put some thought
in to what they would get me. Their actions reflected their love for me by the
thoughtful kind of present they gave me. Many believe that the tradition of giving a
gift at Christmas time originated with the Wise Man who came from the East (Syria?
Iran? Iraq?). Perhaps they were astronomers who had seen the spectacular star and
knew of prophecies (Micah 5:2-3) or traditions that such a star would herald the birth
of the King of the Jews. That they came to worship him implies they had some
understanding of his messianic mission because otherwise it would be hard to explain
wise men traveling so far merely to honor the leader of a politically weak and
unimportant country that was under Roman rule. Seeing the star once again, they
were led to the cow and sheep barn where the future Messiah was born. In Matthew
2:11, we read an accounting of their visit to the Christ child that very first Christmas so
long ago, “And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with
Mary his mother and fell down and worshipped him: and when they had opened their
treasure, they present unto him gift: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.”

According to an article by Rebekah Atkin, these gifts probably had both practical and
symbolic value. Gold:
Practical—For a young couple who would soon have the
expense of traveling to Egypt to avoid the wrath of Herod, the gold would be an
invaluable gift; Symbolic—gold is the typical gift for kings because it symbolizes kingship
and royalty—a fitting gift for the King of Kings. Frankincense: Practical-- aside from its
considerable monetary value, frankincense was used as a sweet-smelling incense and
perfume; Symbolic-- frankincense comes from a sweet tree resin and was used in
priesthood ordinances, in burnt offerings and in oil for anointing priests. Thus, it can
represent the Lord’s priesthood and His role as the Lamb of God to be sacrificed on our
behalf. Finally, Myrrh: Practical—a bitter oil from a tree resin, was also economically
valuable but probably more beneficial to Mary and Joseph for its medicinal uses;
Symbolic—myrrh is usually associated with embalming and burial because of it
preservative qualities; its medicinal uses can symbolize Christ’s role as the Master Healer,
and its use in burials can symbolize “the bitter cup” He would drink when He suffered for
our sins (D&C 19:18-19).
The love and respect manifested by the Wise Men in the giving of these gifts is
obvious. They gave these gifts because they loved this tiny Jewish king. But the gifts
they gave to the Christ child pale in comparison the gift you will bring to the King this
Christmas season as you bring a person/family into the waters of baptism and back into
His presence. What wonderful love and devotion it will show to the Savior as we do so.
Nothing else in the world compares to that gift given by one of His special emissaries for
Christmas 2016. May the Lord bless us all as we begin this special initiative and like the
Wise Men of old, gift our gift and fall down and worship the Lord of Lord and the King of
Kings.
Agradecido por el regalo mayor de todo,
Presidente Merril T Dayton

Message From Hermana Dayton
Determination vs Faintheartedness
Determination is accomplishing the right goals at the right time regardless of the
opposition. There are many examples in scripture of people who had the strong
determination to follow and serve God. Moses
was determined to save the Israelites, Alma was
determined to share the gospel, Nephi was
determined in getting the brass plates and
Joseph Smith was determined to share the
gospel with the world. Many people believe
that self-discipline and determination are the
most important qualities to possess in
accomplishing goals and desires.
We received many examples of missionaries
who had determination. Here are a couple of
them:
“One very hot morning walking in the streets of
_____, looking for a miracle, we were speaking
with everyone but we were not having success.
Continuing in our search we saw an open door
and we always had said "Why not?!" So we
knocked the 30 doors and the very last one
answered us. It was a young girl that was very
kind but told us to pass by another day. When
we thought that there was nothing left to do,
we found a woman, _____, who was very kind,
and we introduced ourselves as missionaries
and that we desired to share this message with her family and the next day we had the
first lesson! Our Heavenly Father loves us and sees our efforts and blesses us to be more
humble and grateful.”
“Two transfers ago I was in a trio with Hermana _____ and Hermana _____. We were
waiting for our new companions and worked together in our area in _____. In the
afternoon, we made the decision to go to a visit with a less active that for quite some time
we had intended to visit but she did not want us to... However, we went, thanks to the
Hermanas that pushed me forward. When we arrived we rang the doorbell to be
admitted into the building. Even though there were people in the building, they refused to
let us in. I wanted to leave because we had already tried to meet with her and talk with
her several times but she did not want to. The Hermanas told me that we should try

to ring the doorbell one more time and if we had arrived all the way there, it was
because the Lord wanted us to speak with her. So we tried one more time but she didn't
answer. We decided to pray to see if it was the will of the Lord to enter and leave her a
note on her door. We prayed and at the instant that we said "Amen", the building door
opened thanks to a person that was leaving. We went up and knocked on her door, but
she didn't answer. At least we were able to leave a note so that she knew that we were
there and interested in speaking with her. The Hermanas taught me a good lesson
about perseverance in any situation and that persistence brings miracles and answers to
our prayers.”
“We went through some weird experiences together in _____. Because of residency,
Hermana _____ had to return to the south of Spain to renew her papers. So we went
together and during this visit, she was going to have to see her family for the first time in
15 months. I was a bit worried for her and for the repercussions that this visit was going to
have. Perseverance is the ability to react to situations and continue regardless of what
happens. During those days she was very strong and saw it all as a blessing and
motivation to continue onwards. When we returned, she worked even harder. She was
an incredible example for me.”
President Dayton and I are very inspired by the determination that we see in so many of
you. We observe you working hard, being diligent with great determination to find those
whom we can bring to Christ. We love you and will continue to pray for you as you
faithfully serve the Lord.
Sincerely,
Hermana Dayton

The Miracle of Baptism
 One miracle this week so being
able to work with a member
and we were teaching this
women that had met our
member friend a year ago and
even had gone to church with
her. It was a tender moment as
we were able to teach her
about the Book of Mormon and
our member friend was able to
bear her testimony of its
truthfulness. I love working with
members, they truly have a way
with helping others gain a
greater understanding of our
Savior.

and we were able to set a
fecha with him for this Friday.
We are doing our best to help
him be fully prepared because
we know that he knows that
this is something he feels and
wants. He told us that one day
as he was thinking about
whether or not he should be
baptized he began to feel
peace in his heart and that he
knew that it was something he
needed to do! We are so
excited for him!!
This week we saw the miracle
of Jean Carlos. He's come 4
times to church and is
preparing for baptism. He's
been fellowshipped very well
and will be a great member.

para el fin de esta semana
pasada y lo conseguimos y
ahora estamos encontrando a
muchos nuevos y es muy
bueno eso.
Estámos viendo
grandes milagros la verdad y
se que es por nuestro trabajo,
pero aún así tenemos que
mejorar mucho y tenemos
muchas metas todavía por
cumplir.

 First off, update on Cinthya.
She said she is very willing to
get baptized on the 23rd. It's a
pretty solid fecha. She can't on
the 24th because of work. But
what makes that even better is
that her 9 year old daughter
Keira is going to do it with her.
And Keira told us she wants to
sing for her mom at their
baptism. How beautiful would
that be?

 Well president things are going
well here in _______!
We
received a reference from a
member. So it was like an early
Christmas present! Here name is
Nasly. She has come to church  This past Sunday for testimony I
twice already and says that she
was a real mess I don't know
loves it. One of things she really
what happened but the Spirit
enjoys about the church is the
was just so powerful. It was
humility and equality and the
amazing that I got the chance
love in the church. We were
to be a conduit in the Lords  This week was good for Helga,
able to teach her about the
hand to touch the heart of
and she was able to come to
Book of Mormon and she was so
Susana. I really hope she gets
church with us. I sure do love
excited to read it! We are very
baptized this week. I love the
her and feel God's love for her
excited for her and hope that
mission it's such a blessing to
as well. I am looking forward to
she will be baptized soon!
be here in the most beautiful of
being able to see her make
circumstances in one of the
the covenant of baptism, and
 Jennifer had her baptismal
most beautiful countries in the
this week we are going to try to
interview this week and...she
world, doing the most beautiful
finish up all the lessons that she
passed! We have just about
work of bringing souls unto
needs left. We are going to
everything planned for her

are so excited. Her mom has
like I do, in the best mission on
been
coming
to
church,
the world’s great face. It's  This week was super great and

investigators right now which is
a miracle!! I'm so happy to
have the opportunity to teach
them and to be a part of their
lives! The mission really is the
best! I have a love for all my
investigators that isn't a love
I've ever felt before! It's a
Christ-like kind of love and I'm
so grateful I get to experience
this in the mission!

 Thank you for helping us make
the decision on whether Rafael
is ready or not. We talked with
him and made it as clear as
possible. We both feel good
about it………… I believe him
and feel that he is telling the
truth. We will be holding his
service at 12 on Saturday! We
are so excited and I know it is
such a big miracle! The Lord
understands our circumstances
and is blessing our efforts. I

know that the hand of the Lord
is involved in the conversion of
this man.

 Well the biggest and most
crazy miracle from the week
was this, so we received that
reference family from the other
elders about a week and a
half ago. So we met with them
and then they came to church
the day after. Well they hadn't
been able to meet with us until
today. Well she told us over e
phone today when we called
to confirm, that they were
happy with the church they
were in and didn't want to
waste our time. So we said it
wouldn't be and we still would
love to meet with them. So we
went over and we were very
warmly welcomed into the
home. Talked a little bit and
then taught about the plan of
salvation and they couldn't get
enough of it. It was one of the

best plan of salvation lessons I
think I have been a part of;
the spirit was so strong you
could feel it like a weight in the
room. They understood so well
and asked so many great
questions. We ended both with
such strong testimonies as well
as the member that was with
us, we were all brought to tears
in our testimonies because of
how beautiful that plan is. We
ended up being able to invite
the whole family of four to be
baptized and they agreed
and will be baptized on the
24th of December. It was such
a blessing we gave a prayer of
gratitude after thanking god
for that miracle. Because we
were going into that lesson
about to be dropped but we
were able to help them find he
light. It was such a beautiful
experience.

“…hacemos todo lo que podemos a fin de que la obra avance;
pero ésta es la obra del Señor, Él la dirige y Él está al mando. Nos
maravillamos al verlo abrir puertas que nosotros no podemos
abrir y efectuar milagros que apenas podemos imaginar”
