B (i)
Study the text below about an activity that very popular in East
Coast of Malaysia and answer the following question in the
spaces provided.

Kite-flying is an activity enjoyed by young and old but in the East Coast of
Malaysia, it is an art and a proud tradition that has been passed down
from generation to generation. During harvest time especially, there will
be many kites flying in the air particularly in the states of Kelantan and
Terengganu.

According

to

legend,

farmers

used

kites

to

replace

scarecrows in the field.

A traditional wau is made using bamboo for the frame. Bamboo is
used because it is light, strong and can be bent easily. First, the bamboo is
split. Then, it is soaked in mud for up to two weeks. This process prevents
the bamboo from being attacked by weevils and also makes it more
flexible. Then the bamboo strips are shaped to form the frame. After that,
paper is used to cover the frame. This is called the sail. Finally, it is
decorated with colourful pieces of rice-paper. Decorative kites sometimes
use fabric instead of paper but if a kite is used for a competition, paper
has to be used.

B (ii)

1. The spine of wau is divided into 3 parts, and then marks

the point of separation.
2. The wing will be tied first.
3. Wing that is tied will also be tied at the marked point at
the spine.
4. Bind at the top and bottom of the tail spine. Make sure
that the balance in both sides.
5. Attach the end of the tail for both left and right to the
wing.
6. For the waist of the wau, make 2 semi circles from the
bamboo stick to form a circle as shown in Wau Bulan
picture above.
7. Last process is to make the head wau with binding half of
the head with wau wing with 2-inch distance from the
spine.
