Distinguishing notes
Comments
ATM: face down, pressing with back of hands alongside body, developed to
sternum stand
ATM: face down, pressing and lifting, developed to inchworm crawling
ATM: Headstand Review and development of headstand lessons, to being able
to fall off head in either a roll or a carp movement
ATM: Lengthening legs (related to rolling), walking on buttocks
ATM contd: bouncing on buttocks; jumping between standing on knees and on
feet and back; walking on the head (i.e. doing a headstand and shifting weight
between hands and head to be able to move forwards and backwards)
Introduces FI, rolling head, demonstrating some things to look for as person lies
on table; sitting the skeleton; talk about skeleton consciousness
ATM: Rolling from fetal position to lying on back, legs and arms outstretched
(why dont arms and legs lie flat?) My notes available for download
Question time: stability of skeleton; working with Ataxia by walking with knee on
table; joint pressure and air pressure; where the hip joint is and chairs; why are
the hamstrings short
ATM: Rolling on the other side, preceded by a demo in sitting and standing of
the difficulty of raising arms overhead
Includes hands interlaced behind head, lift head; and arms crossed over chest,
rocking left and right, differentiatingrolling of head.
Starts with shoulder forwards; open mouth, tongue out and down. A wide variety
of orientations. plays with tongue narrow and wide.Ends taking it into twisting on
one knee/ one foot, with tail out + tongue out
Coordinator, protrusion of hip joint backwards and jaw forwards with bending of
hip/knee/ankle in a movement of heels towards buttocks
Hands interlaced, turn palms outwards overheard. At the same time, expand
chest and pull in stomach, while pressing foot of standing leg into lower leg that
is bent foot to buttock. Also, arms extended at shoulder height, take
arms/shonldusl head left e right, combined with pushing from foot as above.
Also stay to side and lengthen arm(s) toward ceilingcombined also with
foot/chest/belly movement. With head turning one way and other.
What a lesson. Standing and walking with hands interlaced behind the neck: if
you look to the horizon and look down, which foot are you taking forwards or
transferring your weight to when you look down? Try different options of
stepping forwards and taking an elbow forwards (same opposite); and then take
the eyes opposite during the same movement. Then on hands and knees: walk
contralateral and ipsilateral. When you come onto one knee, let that knee slip
so that you fall (through elbow onto side of hip/thigh). What's the difference
between doing that with ipsilateral crawling and contralateral crawling? Finish
up with more walking with hands interlaced behind neck, hands interlaced
lengethened over head.
Face down, move torso to lengthen arm; plant opposite toes and lift knee; face
up: push heels of hands to ceiling to lift C7; face down diagonals with pushing
heel of palm; face down, arm circles under body; same with toes planted
Like a flexors lesson on the side: variations of head and knee towards one
another under the frame of the left arm; also variations of taking head and knee
together up and down, taking elbow/shoulder forwards while head/legs
backwards (extension).
Turning with arm extended; head together with arm and differentiated; hand on
top of head, tilting head side to side; free hand behind head and fold to look at
hip; lift both knees and turn to other side; hand on chin and turn head following
elbow with eyes
Looking over shoulders to heels; lift knees; hold ankle, lift shoulders with other
hand; spell of face up folding (only does bow one side)
Face up legs long, hands interlaced behind head lift head to one side or the
other; dragging elbow along floor towards self; one hand outstretched, head
turned, lift head w/other hand in path over elbow; same arm lengthened and
leading movement; both arms to ceiling leading movement; integrate bending
knees to come to sit; side to side; to kneeling.
ankle/foot or opposite thigh/groin, take knee to floor, in sitting and lying (foot
touching thigh instead of on thigh) and sitting leaning on opposite hand, using
same-side hand on knee; legs crossed, fold forwards leaning on hands behind;
one hand leaning, other lengthening on floor in front; both hands forward,
forehead on floor; return to first movements and take knee to floor pulling foot
closer into groin.
Highest tone/ lowest tone through each nostril; through mouth; speak phrase
with lips, tongue, teeth still (variations); ooh and aah and eee; Count out breath
as reference at beginning and end.
Comparing two kinds of circles: pencil from top of head; and a circle translating
the head, as though tracing a line around the circumference with a stationary
point (using the finger or opposite temple); this is done in all the orientations
listed, both directions of the circle, each finger as guide.
Crazy ultimate extension. lift arm and head, let same side knee fold; opposite
side knee; both knees. Rocking on diagonal in extension looking to hand, to
foot, also with all four limbs in air; knees bent soles of feet touch and similar
lifting knees, looking to the feet over one shoulder and other; continuing until
feet come to floor; rocking more in the midline but looking over one then other
shoulder to feet; interspersed face up rocking on diagonals, rocking up to sit;
Doesn't continue from sitting to lying. Includes work in the imagination; sitting
with the leg that passes through straight; head circles with free hand on top of
head; moving together as a group.
A memorable comment: the location for the four points where hands and feet
stand on the floor can be as familiar to you as the hook on which you hang your
coat by the door.
Says from the beginning: the theme is that anyone can hold their feet and wave
their legs around; the learning is in the how. Includes the above movements
(except both hands), and holding each leg at the ankle while the other hand
touches the sole of the foot in all possible ways; also holding both feet so the
knees are also inside the elbows; also having one hand on the knee and the
other on the foot drawing circles with the feet; also both hands on the sole of
the foot, drawing circles on the ceiling with the foot.
Sit x-legged hands on knees: raise and lower head with listening (ref); lean on
hands behind and lower head forward and make a pendulum; ref; hands on
knees and head backward then pendulum; lean on hands and continue; ref.
Kneeling on one knee/one foot, lower head and towards standing foot circles;
ref; o/s o/d; ref; side sitting, both arms lengthened to ceiling feel (ref2); hold
back ankle with same-side hand and lengthen other arm to ceiling--do
pendulum circle; ref2; ref; o/s o/d; lift arms; then o/s and both directions; ref;
then a completely new twist--kneeling reach backwards to hold heel with one
hand, other to ceiling--pendulum head.
Almost exactly the same series of instructions as MG 78 #4, but with a great
deal of philosophy (hence fascinating as a study in contrasting teaching styles,
and a rich lesson for articulation of the thinking embedded in ATM). From the
beginning he says he will demonstratewhat the difference is between straining
and damaging oneself just to do the movement, and doing the movement the
way he intends, so that improvement will take place.
Watching the fly crawl along the lower leg with one eye, the other, both, while
the lower leg is parallel to the face; lifting lower leg still parallel towards chest;
with head; head and leg lifted, watching fly crawl along the leg
With hands interlaced behind head, lifting head and one elbow, pivoting on the
other elbow; letting the leg on that side creep up; from the bottom, lifting one leg
with a trajectory of taking the foot to the floor beside the head
Lying face up, both legs extended to ceiling and/or both arms extended to
ceiling; folding arm/leg to opposite hip/shoulder; ends with holding each foot
and rocking to draw a diagonal line on the floor behind the back shoulder<->hip,
and holding both feet and drawing a circle on the floor behind the back.
Includes dropping arm triangle with one leg bent to standing and the other
extended; use of see-saw breathing; hands interlaced lifting head, and using
the weight of the hands to hold the head turned to the opposite side while tilting
the knees.
Hands and knees; lowering pelvis backwards; doing the same with knees
crossed; to sitting back between lower legs; take each foot with opposite hand;
rolling to face up and returning one knee at a time; ultimately changing crossing
of knees each time face up.
same as AY#1
Face up, legs over chest: lengthen legs; Rolling in the median plane, arms overhead; arms alongside; rolling with one leg lea
Drawing circles with transfer of weight on side of face on floor; with one arm
under chest, hand extended through between opposite knee and hand, with
palm to ceiling, face turned to look in that same direction: lifting the other hand
to the ceiling: rotating it on its long axis, and swinging it in circles.
Same sequence as #27
Exploring standing with the whole pelvis (not just the tailbone) shifted
I was struck the last time I taught this by the
backwards, i.e. improving standing at the limit backwards on the heels. Includes
finding the movement of the whole pelvis backwards; with feet parallel or one or
the other leg forwards; arms hanging or held out in front; at the limit of the pelvis
backwards, taking the pelvis in an arc from L to R; at the limit backwards, taking
each shoulder blade back to turn the shoulder girdle; staying back with shoulder
and taking that side of pelvis yet further back; tucking chin and taking head and
neck backwards; hugging shoulder girdle, elbows out in front, taking whole back
backwards and in arcs L and R.
No arm triangle. A focus throughout the lesson on letting the eyes rest in the
socket and turn smoothly with the head (not jumping ahead or lagging behind
the rolling of the head). Variations of one arm pulling the other to the side and
arms crossed behind the chest while tilting the knees.
Lengthening heel away of long leg, sensing movement in hip joint of bent leg.
Lifting and lowering long leg = taking opposite hip joint towards and away from
floor. Taking long leg left and right; up and down; in circles. Pelvic clock.
Rolling a heavy ball with legs together and arms alongside; rolling it along
diagonal; the image of the movement eventually is of the body forming an arc
whose rocking on the floor rolls the ball
Includes passing both feet through and rolling in the median plane.
Lifting long leg and leaning on opposite elbow; head variations; both legs lifted
and hands behind knees, shifting from one elbow to the other; legs in air,
arching back towards each leg; with head hanging backwards; clock; arching
back and going back to lying, with and without elbows, with legs in air; with
heels resting on floor.
Leaning elbow on knee of standing leg and tilting L&R; going from knee to foot on that side; variations of speed; alternating leg
Roughly the same movement sequence as 443, but different emphases in the
instructions: on shifting the weight onto the foot whose heel is brought to the
ground (rather than just touching and keeping the weight on the original leg); on
the relationship between the base of the skull and the heel; on the
weightlessness of the weight transfer; on the general liveliness and
lengethening of the whole body that accomplishes this.
Here the movement of flexion is incidental: the lesson consists in playing with
the disturbance that movement creates for the intention of maintaining a host of
features in awareness: the movement of the dantien in breathing, the five
cardinal lines, the spreading of the corners of the mouth that might smile, and
so on.
Sitting soles of feet together, face-hands constant, flex extend; left eye tracks
back of left hand; other; both; forearms parallel to floor, turn left and right;
kneeling flex and extend; take pelvis back turning left and right leaving face and
hands as axis; sit back on heels; turn hands; also stand the toes as erecting
self; raise and lower arms leaving head still.
Includes staying to side (with arm triangle; with crossed knees) and normal
breathing (not seesaw); hugging self and rocking with one leg long and one
bent; differentiating head and eye movements in arm triangle; lifting head with
interlaced hands, staying and breathing; co-ordinating lifting and lowering of the
head with the movement of tilting the knees.
Includes holding feet from inside and outside; lifting foot and straightening leg
while rolling to the opposite side, where the arm and leg are stretched long,
while lifting head.
Basic series of variations on the theme; then at the end, face down, back of
hand in small of back and lift elbow.
Reference movements: face up, legs together, flex and extend feet (breathing;
awareness on pads of feet throughout) and side-lying swing top leg; Sidelying,
swinging top leg forward and backward; with leg forward (backward), flex and
extend ankle; with ankle flexed (extended), flex and extend toes.
Add taking head and top shoulder in opposite and same direction as swinging
leg; ankle remains flexed (extended) and toes more only (strongly) in
opposition; heel draws circles; ends face upwith legs long together and heels
draw circles
With knee bent constant, swing leg forward and backward; bend heel back to
buttock; flex and extend ankle; toes; heel in circles in this position;hold ankles
lift lower leg sideways
On elbows and forearms or on hands; rolling leg left, right; bending heel of long
leg to buttocks; rolling bent leg to floor; changing legs while rolling pelvis,
spreading legs.
Starts with taking knee open to side towards floor in sitting leaning on one hand
and lying (like #4); folding with ankle on opposite knee and held by hand;
moves to taking knee inwards towards floor in sitting, leaning on hand, leaning
on elbow, and lying; then rolling in the median plane from lying to sitting with
ankle on opposite knee/thigh.
Rolling chest with crossed arms, face up; head with and opposite; each hand
behind back, at different heights, rolling pelvis, head with and against; face
down, one hand standing, other arm crossed underneath chest, palm up (above
and below standing hand), roll chest; both arms crossed under, roll chest; push
from toes
Starts with extending both arms forward and back leg backwards; turn back leg;
stand toes; lift knee and raise head; lift whole leg and head; chin in palms, lean
on elbows;propped on straight arms; turn leg; turn leg to lie on side and look our
opposite shoulder; bend back leg and pull into crook of opposite leg > pretzel
legs.
legs in circle,take head and legs left and right; ankle of leg open to side on knee
of straight leg, lift legs and elbows towards one another; take foot towards head;
hands interlaced behind back, lift legs/lift head and shoulders; to sitting, then
rock left and right and flap legs like wings
With face turned to one direction or other, tilting joined lower legs and bringing
heels (feet bending) to buttocks; same with ear on floor and hands interlaced on
back of head; while lifting one or the other elbow, and both elbows; interludes of
face up (on back or propped on elbows and forearms), knees bent feet standing
legs together, pulling feet to side and heels towards buttocks so that outside of
the leg on the bottom lies on the floor and the thighs are in a straight-line
continuation from the body; face down hands in push-up position, turning head
from side to side while tilting legs; head and shoulders lifted and looking over
one or the other shoulder to feet while tilting legs.
See-saw with hand and top knee (in front on the floor); a variant of seesaw
breathing (widening the chest, pulling in the stomach, divorced from breathing);
same see-saw with knee and elbow; from face up, taking leg extended to ceiling
to opposite side to create the twist, and sliding the head sideways; lying face
down and flexing at the same time and extending at the same time all the joints
of the lower limb.
Bending toes towards the sole of the foot with the legs in "pretzel leg"
configuration
Includes rolling in the median plane and stoppinghalf-way through for a 180
degree turn.
Lifting inner and outer border of feet, with legs in "pretzel legs" configurations; in
the end, a brief spell in sitting to see the effect this has on sitting x-legged
Hand on forehead rolling head, elbow to ceiling; foot on ankle, knee to ceiling;
elbow and knee moving in opposite directions. same with arm and leg
extended. Then arm extended behind and leg in front, parallel to floor. take
down towards feet & up towards head.
s under forehead
Hands and knees, sitting backward with legs apart and then together for the
rest of the lesson: raising and lowering head in the two possible combinations;
keeping head raised or lowered and arching back; on back, arching very low
back, with feet standing and with one or the other ankle on opposite knee; on
the side arching very low back with legs one on top of the other, or top leg
slightly behind the other; sitting back on heels and then arching back; sitting
back, arching back and lifting hand; arching while maintaining hand in the air.
Very long five cardinal lines scan; lifting shoulder; hip on diagonal; lifting head
without interlaced hands; lifting both shoulders together and alternating;
alternating lifting shoulders and head in various ways; works a lot with slow and
then fast movements.
Hands under head, one leg bent up to side; variations of lifting long leg and
head/arm; lifting all and holding an arc that one rolls on up and down, and on
diagonals.
Includes dropping arm triangle with one leg bent to standing and the other
extended; use of see-saw breathing; hands interlaced lifting head;
differentiation of head rolling *and eyes* with arm triangle and knees dropping.
Lifting each arm, each leg; each side and diagonal;switching from side to side
letting foot or hand lift, or stay on the ground; jumping; rocking on the diagonal;
continuing the trajectory to lying on the back and returning.
Includes lifting upper body except one elbow (around which one pivots);
attention to the midline; flexing and extending feet; circles with feet, attention to
big/small toe.
Experimentation to feel the synergy of breathing out while lifting the head;
(Not really "an extensor lesson", but it's like a further exploration of pushing up
from the feet while face down (used in MG 78 #7), and lifting the head to see
how far it lifts is the reference movement at the end.)
Experimentation to feel the synergy of breathing out while lifting the head;
elbow<->knee, same side and diagonal; variations in speed--working with lifting
elbows<->knees and making many rapid movements closer and further but
keeping everything in the air; talk about the difference between flexors and
extensors (muscles that work powerfully and quickly, and fatigue quickly--white
fibers; and the slower anti-gravity muscles that can maintain contraction over a
long period of time without fatigue--red fibers) and agonists and antagonists; ;
Includes dropping arm triangle with one leg bent to standing and the other
extended; with both legs extended (detailed exploration of slight shift in knees
with the movement of the arms); arms crossed over chest with legs bent and
long; shoulder girdle/head differentiation both in arm triangle and arms crossed.
In this version unlike most, there is actually a return to dropping the crossed
knees as a reference movement; he also comments interestingly on what the
2nd and 3rd-year versions of this lesson would be.
Face down, both hands under head which is turned, legs long. Variations of
lifting head/arm and diagonal leg; compares lifting same-side leg; exploring with
head/arm in air the rocking on the torso created by lifting one or the other leg;
discussion of and experimentation with timing of lifting head/arm and leg, which
is faster etc (discussion of swimming technique and timing head/arm and legs
so they don't interfere with one another).
Continuation of the previous lesson, focussing on the moment the pelvis rolls to
lift the arm/head on the difficult side; then a lecture about stretching and how
destructive it is.
Tilting each foot in towards the other foot/leg; where does it contact?
Elbow<->knee on same side and diagonal; both hands behind head. Some
imagination work.
With hands under head, both legs long, working with lifting head + each arm,
head turned to each side; lifting each leg with head turned one way and the
other; lifting leg and opposite lengthened arm; including lifting head and looking
at lifted hand, helping lift head with other hand; building to lifting both arms,
both legs, and head. (Arm/leg lifting is on diagonal.) Lots of imagination work
and interspersed with parallel flexor movements, to avoid overworking
extensors.
With knees bent and together; includes variations of lengthening the hand
towards the ceiling, while rotating the arm and shoulder; leaving arm back and
differentiating head, eyes; staying open with face towards ceiling and lifting the
head with one, the other, and both hands.
Includes arms crossed over chest and rocking left and right; and variations of
lifting shoulders; ends with briefly taking arm triangle and crossed legs in
opposite directions. The draw up the spine to the nodding of the chin is
prominent.
With hands under head, one leg bent up to side (so in a stronger twist than
77#2). Many of the standard head/arm lifting variations, but includes lifting the
foot of the bent-up leg, leaving the knee on the floor, until the foot comes
through vertical to the ground by the head/shoulder. The interspersed flexion
movements have the head lifted in a turned position.
Continues from tilting legs, looking over shoulder, to letting legs separate and
coming up to side-sitting facing the other direction. Interesting play with speed
of pelvis and legs --terribly fast -- and speed of torso, arms, head --terribly slow.
Includes dropping arm triangle with one leg bent to standing and the other
extended; use of see-saw breathing; differentiationof head rolling with arm
triangle dropping. Whereas 77#4 seems to developthe idea of the twist (e.g.
legs left, arms right), this seems to be moreabout lengthening each side (that is,
e.g., dropping knees to the left, and taking arm triangle to the left with the left
leg long and the right leg standing, both lengthen the right side; the see-saw
breathing reinforces this sense of opening and lengthening the side one twists
away from).
With top knee bent in front on the floor, lengthening hand forwards on floor;
sliding knee forwards on floor; lifting hand to back; lengthen hand to ceiling
(speed); let knee lift and rock on the balance point, taking knee and hand
alternately towards floor and away (where is the place in the core that
generates this see-saw movement?)
Sliding on each leg the same-side hand, the other-side hand; both hands; the
other-side hand on the outside; with lifting head; lifting both legs and head. The
second side is done in the imagination. (A short-ish lesson.)
With hands under head, one leg bent up to side. Lifting head and each arm;
planting the toes of the long leg and pushing through toes to lift knee, and
ultimately to transmit force up the torso to connect to lifting head/arm.
Interspersed flexion movements involve lifting head, legs and elbows towards
one another, rocking L and R.
Leaving legs to side and doing variations of flexing and extending the knees,
ankles, and toes; interludes of face-up flexion; hands in pushup, lifting head as
tilting legs to look at feet over one shoulder and the other.
Stay in tilt and breathe; with hands interlaced behind head, tilting knees in same
and opposite direction; with arms alongside body; letting feet separate at end of
tilt; letting knees separate at end of tilt. Long section guiding coming up to
standing at the end.
