ABOUT THE COUPLE

LOUIS MARTIN (1823-1894)
Louis Martin was born on August 22, 1823, and baptized at the Church of St. Eulalie in Bordeaux
where his father was the captain of the 19th Light Infantry. He grew up in Alenon.
As a young man, he wished to become a priest. Prayer was an important part of his life.
He liked reading, fishing, walking in the countryside and he enjoyed travelling.
He became more and more conscious of his desire
to devote his life to God in the monastery of the
Great St. Bernard but his difficulty at mastering
Latin compelled him to give up this project.
Since he learned clock-making, he opened his own
jewelry and clock shop in Alenon in 1850.
Until his marriage in 1858, he divided his time between work, leisure activities,
meditation and meeting other people.

ZLIE GUERIN (1831-1877)

Marie-Azlie Guerin was born on December 23, 1831 in the Parish of Saint Denis sur Sarthon near
Alenon. She was baptized the next day. Zlie suffered from severe headaches and respiratory
problems during her entire childhood.
She was blessed with a strong faith. She too dreamed of a
life consecrated to God. She went to the Sisters of Charity of
Saint Vincent de Paul but was refused entry because of her
health.
Accepting that religious vocation was not hers,
she prayed to the Immaculate Virgin for guidance.
In 1853, after learning the rudiments of lace making,
Zlie set up her own office in her parents house in Alencon.
Her relationship with her employees and with her neighbours and acquaintances showed
that she was always ready to fight injustice and give support to those who needed it.
She said: They should be loved like members of ones own family.

When she was 26 years old, Zlie passed Louis on the St.Leonard Bridge
in Alenon and had a premonition: This is he whom I have prepared for you.
Few months after their meeting Louis and Zlie got married on
July 12, 1858, ten oclock in the evening
at the town hall of Alenon and at midnight
at Notre Dame Basilica.
It was the starting point in the life of the
couple who continued their lives on a path
of humanity and of spiritual growth leading
them to holiness.

The couple lived in Alencon where St. Thrse was born.

Louis
initially
offered
Zlie
a
celibate
marriage
(i.e. living as brother and sister), continuing a consecrated way
of life for the first ten months. However, their spiritual adviser
quickly put an end to this arrangement, and Zlie eventually
gave birth to nine children, five of whom survived to adulthood.
The surviving children were Marie, Pauline, Leonie, Celine and
Thrse, who all embraced religious life.

I want to tell you my

dear children that I have
the urgent desire to thank
God because I feel that
our family, though very
humble, has the honor of
being among the
privileged of our
adorable Creator.

Zlie Martin

Zlie died of breast cancer on August 28,1877 at the age of 45. Thrse, their youngest, was four
years old then. After this, Louis and his five daughters move to Les Buissonnets in Lisieux.
After Thrse entered Carmel, Louis suffered from a stroke. His mind began to go. In February 1889,
they had to commit him to the mental institution in Caen. After three years, he was brought home to
Lisieux and stayed with the Gurins.
On July 29, 1894, after a heart attack, he died peacefully at La Musse. He was buried in Lisieux.

CAUSE FOR BEATIFICATION

The heroic holiness of Louis and Zlie Martin was recognized when
Pope John Paul II declared them Venerable in March 1994.
They were beatified as a couple following the miraculous cure of baby
Pietro Schiliro of Monza, Italy, through their intercession.
Pietro Schiliro was born with pulmonary malformation, unable to breathe
on his own. He was healed by God after the prayer of his parents and
relatives to the Venerable Louis and Zlie Martin. Having officially
recognized this healing as a miracle, the Martin couple were beatified on
October 19, 2008 by Cardinal Saraiva Martins, Legate of Pope Benedict
XVI, in Lisieux at the Basilica dedicated to their daughter,
St. Thrse of the Child Jesus.

CAUSE FOR CANNONIZATION

Photos of Carmen Perez Pons

On October 15, 2008, Carmen Perez Pons of Valencia, Spain,

was born after 28 weeks of very difficult pregnancy.
She had complications that are common in very premature babies such
as respiratory distress, double sepsis and cerebral hemorrhage of the
most serious kind. Since she was born on the Feast of St. Teresa of Avila,
her father went to a Carmelite Monastery outside Valencia to ask for
prayers. The Prioress of the Monastery then gave him a card containing
a prayer to Blessed Louis and Blessed Zlie Martin in Spanish.
Carmens parents prayed to the Blessed Couple even though they have
never heard of them or of their famous daughter, St. Thrse.
The next day Carmen was transferred to a new hospital and began to
recover.

However, one problem remained. The cerebral hemorrhage expanded which caused severe pain.
A new offensive of prayer to the Martin spouses was begun. Providentially, the reliquary of the
Blessed Couple arrived at the Shrine of Llerida. Carmens father, her brother Ishmael and
her grandparents came to the Shrine to thank Blessed Louis and Blessed Zlie and to seek their
intercession. Some days later, an ultrasound on Carmen revealed that the cerebral hemorrhage had
disappeared and scars were no longer visible.
With the miraculous healing of little Carmen Perez Pons, Pope Francis canonized Blessed Louis and
Blessed Zlie as Saints of the Universal Church during the Synod of Family on October 18, 2015.
They were the first couple to be canonized together in the history of the Catholic Church.

WHAT ARE RELICS

THE RELICS OF STS. LOUIS AND ZELIE

MARTIN

On August 29, 1877, the day after her death,

Zlie Martin was buried at the Notre Dame Basilica in
Alencon, the parish church where she and Louis got
married. Seventeen years later, Louis died and his body
was taken to Lisieux and was buried on August 2, 1894
after a requiem mass in the town's St. Peter Cathedral.
On October 1894, Isidore Guerin transferred her sister,
Zlie's body to the family vault in Lisieux.
With the completion of the Basilica of St. Thrse of the Child Jesus in Lisieux, the mortal remains of
St. Thrses parents, Louis and Zlie Martin, were transferred in 1954 at the back of the basilica.
Louis and Zlie Martin were given an honorable place flanking a beautiful marble image of their daughter.
Many pilgrims also visited their burial site.
Part of the process of beatification and canonization was the exhumation and recognition of the
Martin couples relics. After the relics were cleaned and documented, they were transferred to the reliquary
donated by the people of Ireland on the occasion of the beatification. This beautiful reliquary is in the
Crypt of the Basilica of St. Thrse in Lisieux where the relics of the couple may be venerated.
A smaller reliquary with the same design and fit for traveling was also made for pilgrimages.
This reliquary was brought to Rome, with the Pilgrim Relics of St. Thrse during the opening of the
Synod of Bishops on the Family in 2014.

WHY VENERATE THE RELICS OF STS. LOUIS AND ZELIE MARTIN IN PARTICULAR?
Part of the mortal remains of parents of St. Thrse are contained in the beautiful pilgrim reliquary
that travels in different places. In canonizing Blessed Louis and Zlie Martin at the end of the same
Synod on October 18, 2015, the Church invites all to know them and take them as models and
intercessors for all families.
Sts. Louis and Zlie attained holiness and fullness of eternal life through their family life.
These days, more than ever, we need their inspiration and intercession, as Christian marriage and
family life are in danger and under attack from various forces around us.
The Churchs recognition of the miraculous healings of two children, Pietro Schilero (of Monza, Italy)
and Carmen Perez Pons (of Valencia, Spain) through the intercession of Louis and Zlie Martin brought
about their beatification and canonization. We, as children of Holy Mother Church, may ask the
Martin Couple to intercede for our many illnesses, spiritual, moral or physical.
Their relics, their mortal remains, are the closest we can approach them, now that they,
with their daughter, St. Thrse of the Child Jesus, are now in Gods presence.

THE PILGRIM RELIQUARY

The Reliquary is decorated with different images and symbols evoking the life and message of the
Martin couple. A smaller version with the same design and images was made for pilgrimages both
in France and around the world.

PRAYER TO STS. LOUIS & ZLIE MARTIN

Sts. Louis and Zlie Martin,
today we turn to you in prayer.
By fulfilling the duties of your state in life
and practicing the evangelical virtues
as spouses and as parents,
you have modelled for us
an exemplary Christian life.
May the example
of your unwavering trust in God
and your constant willingness
to surrender all the joys, the trials, the sorrows
and the sufferings that filled your life
encourage us to persevere
in our daily challenges
and to remain in joy and Christian hope.
We implore your intercession
to bring our petitions to God,
who is all mercy and love:
(mention your petition).
Sts. Louis and Zlie Martin,
pray for us!

Thereses Canticle of Love

You Fill My Heart

by Sr. Marie Therese Sokol, OCD

Taken from the writings and spirituality of
St. Therese of Lisieux

(Prayer of St. Therese of the Child Jesus)

Music: Arnel dC Aquino, SJ;
Lyrics: Johnny Go, SJ
Sung by: Oggie Benipayo

How great and tender is our God

who has smiled on the lowly.
Eternally my heart will sing
a new canticle of love.
Come, all who hunger, all who thirst,
all who long for fulfillment.
The God of mercy waits for you
as a mother her child.
Oh come to the living water,
fear not your weakness,
Forever trusting in God's merciful love.
Through the shadows of the night,
love will be my guiding light.
(Only for today.)
Presence hidden from my sight,
'til the clouds are put to flight.
(Just for today.)
Beneath your gaze I've blossomed forth,
as a rose in the sunshine.
With joyful heart I've given all
to the myst'ry of love.
In peace I will come before you
with empty hands,
relying solely on your merciful love.
Through the veil your face appears,
beauty shrouded bathed in tears.
(Only for today.)
Bread of sinners I will share,
rose unpetalled ev'rywhere.
(Just for today.)
Ah, my God, I will sing of your love
for this one eternal day,
for this one eternal today, eternal today.
Transformed in Love's consuming fire,
lifted up in glory,
her fragrance filling all the earth,
drawing us after her.
Until, in eternity we join in one chorus,
forever singing of God's merciful love-Canticle of love, song of love,
this eternal day I will sing,
sing of your love.

You fill my heart with sighs,

Breathless they dance in the sky
And when You whisper Your sad lullaby,
Tears fill my eyes.
You fill my night full with stars,
Restless my soul seeks Your eyes.
Soon as it shimmers,
Your smile in the night,
Dreams fall into flight.
I long to be Your child,
Your song to fill this dark night,
Light for the lost in this lonely exile.
I need to hear Your word,
To be near You in this scarred world.
One little sound is a song
if it soars in Your heart.
Ill fill your world with love,
Roses shall rain from the skies.
And as they scatter, gather the flowers
He shall reign in our lives.
As long as youre His child,
His song shall fill your dark night,
Light when youre lost in this lonely exile.
We need to hear his Word.
Would you bleed to heal
His scarred world?
Your little thorn is a rose
if it grows in His heart.

As long as you believe,

Roses shall rain from the skies.
