THE WORLD STANDARD

Ariel Reliability
Ariel is the largest manufacturer of separable reciprocating gas compressors
in the world, setting the standard in quality, reliability and customer
support. Ariels CNG compressors are based on the same designs that are
used in field gas, process and transmission services, and are built to run 24
hours a day, 365 days a year. This experience makes the Ariel compressor
one of the most robust compressors in the CNG market.
Ariel compressors are built to perform beyond expected and specified
requirements. We lead the world in the development of modern
compression technology with non-cooled cylinders, high-speed driver
rated design and market-driven innovation. When it comes to compression
technology, we are determined to remain the experts and the leaders.

ARIEL CNG CASE STUDY

City of Dublin
With the help of a $1.5 million grant from the US Department of Energy
through Clean Fuels Ohio, the City of Dublin constructed a state-of-theart CNG fueling station and fleet management center a move expected
to reduce carbon emissions and lower annual fuel costs for the central
Ohio city.
Open to the public, this fast-fill fueling station allows natural gas vehicles
to fuel up in the same amount of time as conventionally fueled vehicles.
Through the utilization of Ariels compressor performance program and
application-based engineering, two Ariel JGQ, two-throw, four-stage
reciprocating compressors were selected for the station.
Packaged by an authorized Ariel CNG distributor, the compressors are
a vital component of Dublins commitment to providing CNG services
to its current residents and business community while also providing a
sustainable, affordable plan for future generations.

ARIEL CNG CASE STUDY

Smith Dairy
Smith Dairy Products, a family-owned business in Orrville, Ohio, began researching the benefits of
compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel in 2010. After realizing how volatile the diesel market had
become, Smith Dairy decided to take action and have more control over their transportation costs.
Two years later, Smith Dairy opened their privately funded, publicly accessible CNG station. The
canopied station is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will play a critical role in helping Smith
Dairy reach their long-term goal of becoming a diesel-free fleet.
At the heart of the station are two Ariel JGQ, two-throw, four-stage reciprocating compressors. In
addition to manufacturing this vital equipment for Smith Dairy, Ariel provided industry knowledge and
engineering support based on over 40 years of natural gas compression expertise.
Weve had a great experience working with Ariel. Theyve been supportive every step along the way everything from our educational forums where theyve come and been on panels to answer questions
on CNG and how to get into the game, to questions about the compressors, said Project Manager
Rebecca Shipper. Theyve been really helpful as weve had questions ourselves about putting in the
station. Theyve been fantastic to work with.

How CNG Works

CNG is a fuel made by compressing natural gas or
biogas to less than 1% of its original volume. Once
compressed, CNG is stored and distributed at a
significantly lower cost than diesel or gasoline.
Vehicles running on CNG are cleaner burning than
their conventionally fueled counterparts and
reduce CO emissions. Because CNG is cleaner
than diesel or gasoline, engine wear is reduced,
prolonging the lifespan of your vehicles.

Utility pipelines transport natural gas to compressor stations where it passes

through a gas dryer. These dryers contain scrubbers and filters that capture liquids
and other foreign particles.

Once dry, the gas travels to an Ariel compressor. Here, the gas is compressed
through two to five stages of compression to a target pressure of 4,500 psig.

The compressed natural gas is sent to a priority panel that directs the flow of CNG
from the compressor to the on-site, above-ground storage vessels.

When required, the CNG flows from the storage vessels to the dispenser, where
customers fill their natural gas vehicles - much like a conventional fueling station.
