In this study we will learn the following:

1. Christ’s methods of healing.

2. New age healing.
3. The Spirit of prophecy and validation of health principles.
4. Why conventional methods are failing.
5. The objective of the health message.
6. The relationship of the health message to the third angel’s message.

Christ Taught, Preached, and Healed: “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and
preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness (infirmity or malady) and all manner
of disease (debility) among the people.” Matt.4.23.

Teaching and Healing. “The Lord's people are to be one. There is to be no separation in His work. Christ sent
out the twelve apostles, and afterward the seventy disciples, to preach the gospel and to heal the sick. "As ye
go," He said, "preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the
dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." Matt. 10:7, 8. And as they went forth preaching the
kingdom of God, power was given them to heal the sick and cast out evil spirits. In God's work teaching and
healing are never to be separated.” SPTB01.

What were the three natures of man that Jesus healed?

“And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto
the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer (mental nature) ; thy sins be forgiven thee (spiritual nature).”

“But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the
palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed (physical nature), and go unto thine house.” Matt.9.6.

There is a relationship between the mental, spiritual and physical natures of man and Christ’s method of
teaching, preaching and healing. Teaching appeals to the mental nature of man, preaching is more directed at
subduing the spiritual nature of man, and healing is focusing on restoring the physical nature, only by healing all
three can it be truly said, “…Thou art made whole.” John.5.14.

What simple treatments does God use to heal?

Poultices: “And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.”

Hydrotherapy: “Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the
man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.” 2King.5.14.

“And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way
therefore, and washed, and came seeing.” John.9.7

The Word of God: “He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”
Psa.107.20. “The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof:
but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.” Matt.8.8.
Herbs: “In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare
twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the
nations.” Rev.22.2.

Healing of soul before healing of Body.

“The paralytic found in Christ healing for both the soul and the body. He needed health of soul before he could
appreciate health of body. Before the physical malady could be healed, Christ must bring relief to the mind, and
cleanse the soul from sin. This lesson should not be overlooked. There are today thousands suffering from
physical disease who, like the paralytic, are longing for the message, "Thy sins are forgiven." The burden of sin,
with its unrest and unsatisfied desires, is the foundation of their maladies. They can find no relief until they
come to the Healer of the soul. The peace which He alone can impart would restore vigor to the mind and health
to the body.” MH.077.

While we labor to restore a persons physical malady we are to labor for their soul, if we are not doing such we
are not following Christ’s methods and we are only helping Satan’s cause by giving them more energy to work
for the Devil. A life of sin lies at the root of disease and therefore can never be treated independently.

Christ taught that health was the reward of obeying the law.

“Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a
worse thing come unto thee.” John.5.14 “Christ had been the guide and teacher of ancient Israel, and He taught
them that health is the reward of obedience to the laws of God.” However sickness was not always the result
of the sick person’s sin. Sickness could be the result of a weakness within the family that was inherited by the
individual sick person. It could have been a sin within previous generations back to the third and forth
generation. The person might have been ignorant of such a weakness. If he had known of it he might have had
been more careful in his eating, drinking, and working habits in order to keep himself in health. DA.824.
The true medical missionaries methods.

God's true commandment-keeping people will be instructed by Him. The true medical missionary will be wise
in the treatment of the sick, using the remedies that nature provides. And then he will look to Christ as the
true Healer of diseases. The principles of health reform brought into the life of the patient, the use of nature's
remedies, and the cooperation of divine agencies in behalf of the suffering, will bring success. ME.1910-04-01.

Christ does not heal the sick without cooperation within reach of man

“God does not heal the sick without the aid of the means of healing which lie within the reach of man; or when
men refuse to be benefited by the simple remedies that God has provided in pure air and water.” PC.026.
What are God’s true remedies?

“Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power--
these are the true remedies. Every person should have a knowledge of nature's remedial agencies and how to
apply them. It is essential both to understand the principles involved in the treatment of the sick and to have a
practical training that will enable one rightly to use this knowledge.”

Why are many people not willing to use natural methods of healing?

“The use of natural remedies requires an amount of care and effort that many are not willing to give.
Nature's process of healing and upbuilding is gradual, and to the impatient it seems slow. The surrender of
hurtful indulgences requires sacrifice. But in the end it will be found that nature, untrammeled, does her work
wisely and well. Those who persevere in obedience to her laws will reap the reward in health of body and health
of mind.” MH.127.

Adventists brought to the test: “The time will come, Christ tells us of, when many deceivers will go forth,
declaring themselves to be Christ. The Saviour says, "Go ye not after them". We need not be deceived.
Wonderful scenes, with which Satan will be closely connected, will soon take place. God's Word declares that
Satan will work miracles. He will make people sick, and then will suddenly remove from them his Satanic
power. They will then be regarded as healed. These works of apparent healing will bring Seventh-day
Adventists to the test. Many who have had great light will fail to walk in the light, because they have not
become one with Christ.” BCL.006.

Satan works miracles of healing: “Fearful sights of a supernatural character will soon be revealed in the
heavens, in token of the power of miracle-working demons. The spirits of devils will go forth to the kings of
the earth and to the whole world, to fasten them in deception, and urge them on to unite with Satan in his last
struggle against the government of Heaven. By these agencies, rulers and subjects will be alike deceived.
Persons will arise pretending to be Christ himself, and claiming the title and worship which belong to the
world's Redeemer. They will perform wonderful miracles of healing, and will profess to have revelations
from Heaven contradicting the testimony of the Scriptures.” GC88.623.

“God’s servants should not today work by means of miracles: Works of Healing The way in which Christ
worked was to preach the Word, and to relieve suffering by miraculous works of healing. But I am instructed
that we cannot now work in this way; for Satan will exercise his power by working miracles. God's
servants today could not work by means of miracles; because spurious works of healing, claiming to be
divine, will be wrought.” NBL.105.

Sympathetic remedies channels for Satan’s spells: “His agents still claim to cure disease. They attribute
their power to electricity, magnetism, or the so-called "sympathetic remedies." In truth, they are but
channels for Satan's electric currents. By this means he casts his spell over the bodies and souls of men.”

Healing methods that disturb the electric currents of the brain deadens the mind: “The brain nerves, which
communicate to the entire system, are the only medium through which Heaven can communicate to man, and
affect his inmost life. Whatever disturbs the circulation of the electric currents in the nervous system,
lessens the strength of the vital powers, and the result is a deadening of the sensibilities of the mind.”—
T.V.II, p. 347

Warning against spiritualistic physicians: “I have from time to time received letters both from ministers and
lay members of the church, inquiring if I think it wrong to consult spiritualist and clairvoyant physicians. I have
not answered these letters for want of time. But just now the subject is again urged upon my attention. So
numerous are these agents of Satan becoming, and so general is the practice of seeking counsel from them, that
it seems needful to utter words of warning. God has placed it in our power to obtain a knowledge of the laws
of health. He has made it our duty to preserve our physical powers in the best possible condition, that we may
render to Him acceptable service. Those who refuse to improve the light and knowledge that has been mercifully
placed within their reach are rejecting one of the means which God has granted them to promote spiritual as well
as physical life. They are placing themselves where they will be exposed to the delusions of Satan.” 5T.193

New Age healing leads to the sick being controlled by Satan’s power: “The apostles of nearly all forms of
spiritism claim to have power to heal. They attribute this power to electricity, magnetism, the so-called
"sympathetic remedies," or to latent forces within the mind of man. And there are not a few, even in this
Christian age, who go to these healers, instead of trusting in the power of the living God and the skill of well-
qualified physicians. The mother, watching by the sickbed of her child, exclaims, "I can do no more. Is there no
physician who has power to restore my child?" She is told of the wonderful cures performed by some
clairvoyant or magnetic healer, and she trusts her dear one to his charge, placing it as verily in the hand of Satan
as if he were standing by her side. In many instances the future life of the child is controlled by a satanic
power which it seems impossible to break.” PK.211.

A lesson of warning: “And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and
was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, inquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron whether I
shall recover of this disease. But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the
messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to
inquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron? Now therefore thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not come down from
that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. And Elijah departed.” 2King.1.2-4.

Satan’s New Age physicians win your confidence and can tell your history: “Angels of God will preserve
His people while they walk in the path of duty, but there is no assurance of such protection for those who
deliberately venture upon Satan's ground. An agent of the great deceiver will say and do anything to gain his
object. It matters little whether he calls himself a spiritualist, an "electric physician," or a "magnetic healer." By
specious pretenses he wins the confidence of the unwary. He pretends to read the life history and to
understand all the difficulties and afflictions of those who resort to him.” 5T.198.

Just because a method of healing works it doesn’t mean that it is from God!!! “Through spiritualism, Satan
appears as a benefactor of the race, healing the diseases of the people, and professing to present a new and
more exalted system of religious faith; but at the same time he works as a destroyer.” GC.589.

Many ways to heal but only one acceptable way to God: “There are many ways of practicing the healing
art, but there is only one way that Heaven approves. God's remedies are the simple agencies of nature that
will not tax or debilitate the system through their powerful properties. Pure air and water, cleanliness, a proper
diet, purity of life, and a firm trust in God are remedies for the want of which thousands are dying; yet these
remedies are going out of date because their skillful use requires work that the people do not appreciate.”

The question that we must ask, is “Can I fully trust in the Spirit of Prophecy when it conflicts with popular
views of science?” The identifying characteristics of God’s remnant church is the testimony of Jesus, Rev
12.17. The testimony of Jesus we are told in Rev 19.10 is the Spirit of Prophecy, in other words it is not the
testimony of a little old lady called Ellen White. We can be sure that the testimony of Jesus is true, for He was
the one that created these bodies and surely He knows what is best for their needs.

Modern science is constantly changing there beliefs, however God’s word does not change, for He is the same
yesterday, today and for ever, Heb. 13.8. When God raised up a nation Israel and gathered them together out of
Egypt he gave them health laws, such s found in Lev. 11-15. When God raised up this Advent movement He
also gave them health laws. When God made them a great nation He gave them a prophetess called Miriam,
when He rose up the Seventh Day Adventist Church He gave them a prophetess called Ellen G. White. When
God had led them out of Egypt He gave them testimonies to help them know the principles of the law, and when
He led us out of spiritual Egypt He also gave us the testimonies to teach us by examples how to carry out His
moral and health laws.

Even though some scientists do not agree with the principles laid down in the Spirit of Prophecy it doesn’t deny
its validity. For true science is agreeing with it, and we can have confidence in upholding its beliefs even
though we do not understand sometimes the technical questions. “Let no man deceive himself. If any man
among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this
world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.” 1Cor.3.18-19.

We must test science based on scripture and the testimony of Jesus, not test scripture based on erroneous
science. 1Tim.6.20 “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain
babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:” We must accept its principles by faith, even though we
may not have all the answers, otherwise we will trust in the wisdom of man and shall surely fall. But as Daniel
we must also understand true science that we be not deceived, Dan 1:4. Matt.7.26 “And every one that heareth
these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the

God rarely gives scientific explanation for healing:

“And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass,
that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it
upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he
lived.” Num.21.8-9

Moses was bidden to make and lift the brazen serpent on the pole, and make the proclamation that whosoever
should look upon it should live. And all who looked did live. They recovered health at once. Suppose ye that
this life-giving message, the invitation to look upon the representation of Christ, was given in whispered tones?
Suppose ye that there were meetings for discussion as to how the symbol of the brazen serpent could have any
efficacy? Some hesitated, desiring a scientific explanation, but no light was given. They must accept the
words given by Christ to Moses. It was proclaimed with the trumpet, and by the leading men of every tribe
throughout the encampment. The word obeyed, would bring life and healing. PH080.048. "The just shall
live by faith." Romans 1:17.

God has given us enough evidence to believe but hasn’t removed all cause to doubt: "Satan has ability to
suggest doubts and to devise objections to the pointed testimony that God sends, and many think it a virtue, a
mark of intelligence in them, to be unbelieving and to question and quibble. Those who desire to doubt will
have plenty of room. God does not propose to remove all occasion for unbelief. He gives evidence, which
must be carefully investigated with a humble mind and a teachable spirit, and all should decide from the weight
of evidence." 5T.675. "God gives sufficient evidence for the candid mind to believe; but he who turns from
the weight of evidence because there are a few things which he cannot make plain to his finite understanding
will be left in the cold, chilling atmosphere of unbelief and questioning doubts, and will make shipwreck of
faith." VOL. 3, P. 255 (1873)

Big hospitals are not God’s Plan: “The Lord has not sent his people at great expense to different parts of the
globe, among idolatrous and heathen nations, in order that they may use large amounts of money in building
medical missionary hospitals.” KC.162.

Small sanitariums needed: “Small sanitariums should be established in many places. This will open doors
for the entrance of Bible truth and will remove much of the prejudice that exists against those who look upon the
colored people as having souls to be saved as well as the white people.” 7T.058.
Sanitariums are to be built in the country: “Never, never build mammoth sanitariums. Let these
institutions be small, and let there be more of them, that the work of winning souls to Christ may be
accomplished. It may often be necessary to start sanitarium work in the city, but never build a sanitarium in a
city. Rent a building, and keep looking for a suitable place out of the city. The sick are to be reached, not by
massive buildings, but by the establishment of many small sanitariums, which are to be as lights shinning in a
dark place. Those who are engaged in this work are to reflect the sunlight of Christ's face. They are to be as salt
that has not lost its savor. By sanitarium work, properly conducted, the influence of true, pure religion will be
extended to many souls.” RH.1905-02-02.016

“We are not to erect in the cities large buildings in which to care for the sick, because God has plainly
indicated that the sick can be better cared for outside of the cities. In many places it will be necessary to
begin sanitarium work in the cities; but, as much as possible, this work should be transferred to the country as
soon as suitable locations can be secured.” 7T.060.

A lesson of warning: “And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his
disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians. And Asa slept
with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.” 2Chr.16.12-13.

“And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, And had suffered many things of many
physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse.” Mark.5.25-26

Not safe to trust in physicians that fear not God: “It is not safe to trust to physicians who have not the
fear of God before them. Without the influence of divine grace the hearts of men are "deceitful above all
things, and desperately wicked." Self-aggrandizement is their aim. Under the cover of the medical profession
what iniquities have been concealed, what delusions supported! The physician may claim to possess great
wisdom and marvelous skill, when his character is abandoned and his practice contrary to the laws of life.
The Lord our God assures us that He is waiting to be gracious; He invites us to call upon Him in the day of
trouble. How can we turn from Him to trust in an arm of flesh?” 5T.194.

“We should ever remember that the object of the medical missionary work is to point sin-sick men and women
to the Man of Calvary, who taketh away the sin of the world.”

“In their conduct toward the patients all should be actuated by higher motives than selfish interest. Everyone
should feel that this institution is one of God's instrumentalities to relieve the disease of the body and point the
sin-sick soul to Him who can heal both soul and body.” 4T.564.

“If we are to go to the expense of building sanitariums in order that we may work for the salvation of the sick
and afflicted, we must plan our work in such a way that those we desire to help will receive the help they need.
We are to do all in our power for the healing of the body; but we are to make the healing of the soul of far
greater importance.” 7T.096.

“And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and
receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is
poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in
the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up
for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever
receiveth the mark of his name. Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of
God, and the faith of Jesus.” Rev.14.9-12.
“And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or
in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the
number of his name.” Rev.13.16-17

This message is warning us that there will come a time when we won’t be able to buy or sell except we have the
mark of the beast. What is going to be the greatest test that we will face? It is the test of appetite! The health
message is designed to prepare us for that time, so that we will be strong to resist the temptation of receiving the
Mark, because of dietary restrictions.

“The health reform, I was shown, is a part of the third angel's message and is just as closely connected
with it as are the arm and hand with the human body. I saw that we as a people must make an advance move
in this great work. Ministers and people must act in concert. God's people are not prepared for the loud cry of
the third angel. They have a work to do for themselves which they should not leave for God to do for them. He
has left this work for them to do. It is an individual work; one cannot do it for another. "Having therefore these
promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in
the fear of God." Gluttony is the prevailing sin of this age. Lustful appetite makes slaves of men and
women, and beclouds their intellects and stupefies their moral sensibilities to such a degree that the
sacred, elevated truths of God's word are not appreciated. The lower propensities have ruled men and
women.” 1T.486.

“In order to be fitted for translation, the people of God must know themselves. They must understand in
regard to their own physical frames that they may be able with the psalmist to exclaim: "I will praise Thee;
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." They should ever have the appetite in subjection to the moral and
intellectual organs. The body should be servant to the mind, and not the mind to the body.” 1T.486.

“Medical missionary work is the right hand of the gospel. It is necessary to the advancement of the cause of
God. As through it men and women are led to see the importance of right habits of living, the saving power of
the truth will be made known. Every city is to be entered by workers trained to do medical missionary work. As
the right hand of the third angel's message, God's methods of treating disease will open doors for the
entrance of present truth. Health literature must be circulated in many lands. Our physicians in Europe and
other countries should awake to the necessity of having health works prepared by men who are on the ground
and who can meet the people where they are with the most essential instruction.” 7T.059.

“I want to say that the third angel's message is the gospel, and that the health reform is the entering wedge for
the truth.” PH066.
