THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

In this lesson we will learn:

1) The structure of the immune system
2) The functions of the immune system.
3) The spiritual lessons of the immune system

There is a war going on, such a valiant fight,

And it’s fought everyday, but is out of your sight.
Many soldiers are lost whilst defending for you,
And it’s all done so secretly, all out of your view.
They protect you from enemies lurking so near,
And keep away sickness and help you not fear.
For they carry you through many battles you bare,
And they do a good job to lighten your care.
When your first go to sleep their fight still goes on,
But no need for alarm as they right what is wrong.
As long you feed them the best of your food,
If not, they’ll get lazy and upset your mood.
They need adequate light to march them to war,
But to get it too much will create them a chore.
They need lots of water to prolong their days,
And to take a long walk will better their ways.
To trust in their chief is what they know best,
And an early retirement is needed for rest.
Clean air they desire, breathed even at night,
To keep their ranks full and an army all white.
So please take good care of your soldiers that’s true,
Because if not, they’ll revolt, and fight against you.

SPIRITUAL LESSON OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM: To show us the role of faithful leadership in the
church.

1) STRUCTURE OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM: The immune system is a part of the lymphatic system and
instead of consisting of organs or tissue is made up of billions of cells. This is not an organ system but rather a
functional system. Let’s look at the powerful army of the immune system, which comprise of the following:

1. Phagocytes
a. Neutrophils
b. Monocytes
c. Macrophages
2. Lymphocytes
a. T-lymphocytes
b. B-lymphocytes

2) FUNCTION OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM: The function of the immune system is to protect you from
the onslaught of bacteria, viruses, germs and any foreign invasion. Disease is the result of a weakened immune
system, and so in the restoration of health we need to build up the strength of the immune system.

If it wasn’t for our immune system, our body would very quickly be destroyed, so it’s important that we know
how to help it to do it’s job the best way it can. The immune system can be very easily weakened through
breaking just one of the eight laws of health, let me give you an example. The immune system is likened to an
army of soldiers that go off to war, each soldier equipped with a rifle and ammunition to fight the enemy. Each
soldier has already proved himself capable of killing at least 10 enemy soldiers, without suffering any loss or
harm himself. If one soldier comes across the enemy and knows that he can’t successfully defeat them by
himself as the numbers are too great, he then calls to his comrades to came to his aid. They immediately respond
in proportion to the numbers involved. As long as the enemy numbers are not too large the soldiers can do their
job very effectively and get the victory every time. When we overeat food it’s like increasing the enemies on the
battle field and the task of those faithful soldiers task is made a lot more difficult. They can even lose their lives
as a consequence! The food in our stomach can lay there, not being digested and return back into the blood
stream as a poison. This has to be dealt with by those soldier killer T cells causing a tremendous burden for
them, and weakening the vital force of the body, lessening energy, and if continued long enough, will eventually
manifest in some type of disease.

THE WATCHMEN ON THE WALLS OF ZION: God has always had faithful watchmen that have given
warning to His church (the body) of impending danger lurking near.

Watchmen had the role of identifying the nature of those coming into the city, “And David sat between the two
gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and
behold a man running alone. And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there
is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near. And the watchman saw another man running: and
the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also
bringeth tidings. And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of
Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings. 2Sam.18.24-27.

The white blood cells have the same role of identifying the nature of substance coming into the body. They are
like police officers that pick up any suspected violater, and as internal police officers they look for your personal
identification.

Macrophages sit upon the wall, just as did the watchmen of old upon the walls of Jerusalem (the wall
representing the law) and watch out for any likely suspects, and are ready to ambush anything that looks of a
threatening nature. “...Set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes...” Jer.51.12. “I have set watchmen upon thy
walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep
not silence.” Isa.62.6

When the church went into apostacy the watchmen went asleep and failed to carry out faithfully their duty. “His
watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving
to slumber.” Isa.56.10

White blood cells can become more lazy if we do not follow the laws that God gave us. For example, if we only
get half the sleep of what we need the body’s white blood cells are only half as active the next day, they become
tired and fail to do their job properly.

Who are the watchmen? “We are certainly living in the closing days of this earth's history. We need to devote
much time to our spiritual interests, if we would experience the spiritual growth that is essential in this age. We
are to make decided reforms. The Voice said: The watchmen need to awake, and give the trumpet a certain
sound. The morning cometh; and also the night. Wake up, My watchmen. Voices that should now be heard
presenting the truth are silent. Souls are perishing in their sins, and ministers and physicians and teachers are
asleep. Wake up the watchmen!” PR.1908-02-20.

Sacrificial Service: A white blood cell will lay down his life for defending the body and the same can be said
for a true Christian. “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to
lay down our lives for the brethren.” 1st John 3.16.
Lost Perception: Sometimes the white blood cells lose their ability to identify antigens, such as is the case with
AIDS, and the immune response is greatly weakened. Such a situation can also happen in the church, when the
spiritual watchmen may fail to identify the carefully disguised cloak of error that can be likened to antigens that
threaten the body. “And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who
hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass; I know thy works, and charity, and service,
and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. Notwithstanding I have a few
things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach
and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.” Rev.2.18-20.

Here we see that the watchmen were asleep and caught off guard, they had a spiritual antigen in the church that
they had failed to identify and eliminate, it was a life threatening situation and action had to be taken if the body
was to survive.

Acute Perception: When the immune system’s fighters are in healthy condition nothing escapes their notice,
they are on high alert and can tell a true substance from a false one, even if it is very close to the real thing. The
same can be said in God’s church, if the watchman are in good spiritual health, they have increased discernment
of deceptive characters.

“But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, And kept back part of the price,
his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it, at the apostles' feet. But Peter said,
Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the
land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast
thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these
words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. And the young
men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. And it was about the space of three hours after,
when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the
land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed
together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door,
and shall carry thee out.” Acts.5.1-9. Here we see a highly perceptive watchmen discern the difference between
a true member of the body and a false one.

1. Phagocytes
a. Neutrophils
b. Monocytes
c. Macrophages

2. Lymphocytes
a. T-lymphocytes
b. B– lymphocytes

If our immune system is not functioning properly due to breaking the laws of health, we place ourselves in a
position for the immune system to be compromised and disease will inevitably result. Anything that is a poison
to the body can cripple our immune system, but God has placed in our bodies other organs and glands to help
bear the load of these poisons. “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Gal.5.2

PHAGOCYTES: These cells, are derived from the bone marrow, that carry on phagocytosis or ingestion of
foreign particles. Phagocytes love to gobble up those sneaky little pathogens that bring
bacteria and many other foreign invaders. They destroy them by surrounding them with their membrane then
moving the object into the interior of the cell. Once inside the cell it fuses with a lysosome (a cellular organelle)
and destroys the bacteria. This illustrates a good spiritual lesson about those who defend the church, as they can
be likened to these white blood cells that dwell in the bone, which is symbolic of God’s law. They are the most
effective ones in dealing with foreign teachings that come into the church. The most important phagocytes are
neutrophils and monocytes. These phagocytes migrate out of the blood and into the tissues in response to an
infection. The neutrophils have a short existence but are very effective. Once in the tissues, monocytes develop
into phagocytic cells called macrophages. Some macrophages go out on patrol, like security guards watching
for any dangerous intruders in the tissues, such as bacteria to engulf, “Son of man, I have made thee a watchman
unto the house of Israel…” Ezekiel 3.17. Others become permanent residents of other organs. Macrophages
can also be found in the spleen and lymph. Specialized antibodies that bind to, and coat certain foreign
particles, help macrophages function effectively. They serve as “flags” that alert the macrophage to the
presence of foreign material, infectious bacteria, or cellular debri.

LYMPHOCYTES:

Lymphocytes: These white blood cells also help to protect us against infections, but they do this phagocytosis.
Lymphocytes function in the immune mechanism, the complex process that makes us immune to infectious
diseases.

The immune mechanism starts to operate, for example, when microbes invade the body. In some way their
presence stimulates lymphocytes to start multiplying and become active immune cells. Lymphocytes called B-
lymphocytes begin to actively produce specific antibodies that inhibit the microbes. Other lymphocytes called
T– lymphocytes, may also become involved, directly attacking the microbes or aiding in the function of B-
lymphocytes.

Lymphocytes originate in red bone marrow and those lymphocytes destined to become T cells migrate to the
University of the thymus and develop immunocompetence there. B cells probably remain in the bone marrow
while developing immunocompetence. Not all T cells graduate from the thymus, only the strongest survive, the
others die. Jesus said “Many are called but few are chosen,” Mathew 22.14, and “He that endureth to the end
shall be saved.” Matt. 24.13. After graduating from the thymus or bone marrow (as they are now competent)
lymphocytes “seed” the lymph nodes, spleen, and other lymphoid tissues where the antigen challenge occurs.
These competent and mature lymphocytes circulate continuously in the bloodstream and lymph and throughout
the lymphoid organs of the body.

The T cells have been trained for combat and are the elite soldiers that protect the body against harmful viruses,
bacteria, parasites and cancer cells. T cells are of themselves unable to recognize the enemy without the
antigens being attached to the body’s own cells. This acts as an identification signal to the T cells and prompts
them into action.

The skin is an amazing defense system and is the first in line against bacteria and many other substances such
as toxins and harmful chemicals. If the skin fails to protect us, we have a back up system that is ready to fight
for us, which is the immune system. The immune system is full of spiritual lessons to the determined seeker,
and teaches us many valuable lessons of practical Christianity.

White blood cells reveal to us the love of God, in that they voluntarily lay down their lives to fight off disease.
As to did our Lord Jesus Christ in giving up his life in order to protect his body which is his church, Ephesians
5.25.

The brave warriors of the T cells are like Christian soldiers marching off to war against the enemy of
righteousness. They are only any good to the body (the church) if they are willing to give their lives for it.

The T cells have receptors that bind to antigens, (a substance that is recognized as foreign to the body) and each
T cell is committed to recognize and disarm one specific type of antigen. T cells work in cooperation with B
cells, (another type of lymphocyte cell) and this team is a formidable foe to the enemy.

IMMUNITY: WHAT IS IT? HOW IS IT OBTAINED?

Dr. Alexis Carrel for years with the Rockefeller Institute, in his book “Man the Unknown,” says there are two
kinds of immunity – one natural and the other artificial. He states that to date the trend of medical science has
been toward the artificial; that medicine has been following the easiest road of building artificial health through
the use of pharmaceutical products, chemicals, drugs, antitoxic sera, hospital techniques, etc.

He continues: we ought to learn the secret of natural immunity to disease; that the future advance of medicine
will not come through better hospitals, or more and better pharmaceutical products, but through having sound
nervous systems, immunity to infections, and through the prevention of degenerative diseases. For instance,
instead of giving a man a substitute for the secretion of some gland, we ought to find out how to make his own
glands secrete their proper juices.

Perhaps another way to say it is to build up immunity rather than to cure disease. Many authorities have said
that disease cannot attack perfectly healthy tissue. Here is a sample citation:

“Living cells resist the attack of micro-organisms. A raw apple or potato remains intact for months, while a
cooked apple or potato is in a very few days covered with mold and in an active state of fermentation and
destructive change. Living cells resist germs.” The Crippled Colon, J.H. Kellogg, MD 255.

THE BODY’S IMMUNE DEFENSES

1. The skin outside of the body and the mucous membrane inside will not allow germs to enter the body itself if
the cells of the skin and membrane are normal. This defensive power is impaired by a deficiency of vitamins.

2. The saliva contains substances which inhibit the growth of germs.

3. The hydrochloric acid in the gastric juice is a strong disinfectant.

4. Bacteria usually thrive in an acid environment, while an alkaline environment inhibits their growth. An
alkaline condition of tissue and blood aids in fighting bacteria.

5. The blood contains substances which hinder the growth of germs.

6. The blood contains white corpuscles which devour germs.

7. Certain minerals assist in combating germs, as when calcium wards off the tuberculosis germ in the lungs.

When these defenses are normal they are adequate, but they are dependent for their vitality upon, a) a serene
mind , b) air, c) exercise , d) sunshine e) rest , f) water , g) temperance h) and nutrition– the very things about
which many people are careless.

Most people in our society fall far short of meeting these simple requirements that our health is so dependent
upon. Ask yourself a question, “How am I obeying these natural laws that are so important to my health?”

ANTIGENS:

An antigen is a substance (usually a giant protein) that produces a provoke on the immune system, creating an
immune response.

When Lucifer rebelled in heaven he became like an antigen in nature. It created a defense response from the
Godhead. This antigen (Lucifer) became a threat to all the host of angels, and sought to make war in the family
or body of God. This antibody had to be identified for what it was, and an immediate immune response from
the Godhead was necessary.
Allergies in the body are caused by the body’s inability to digest and handle proteins. The antibodies then come
out and attach themselves to the protein which creates a substance called a histamine. Histamines are the major
allergy producers, and this creates vasodilation in the blood vessels, causing an influx of blood into the area
resulting in pain which calls a response from the liver to secrete antihistamines.

T CELLS: Helper T cells give messages to B cells to begin to manufacture antibodies. The B cells form into
plasma cells which give host to the antibodies. Helper T cells are the chief cells that give the orders.

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE: On occasion, the immune systems ability to tolerate self-antigens, while still
recognizing and attacking foreign antigens, fails. When this happens, the body produces antibodies and
sensitized affector T cells against its own tissues, causing their destruction. This phenomenon is called auto -
immune disease.

THE ZEAL NOT ACCORDING TO KNOWLEDGE

Auto - immune diseases can teach us a very important lesson about what happens in the body when the
watchmen of Israel fail to recognize what is part of the body and what is an enemy to the body. Let’s take a
case study on the history of Paul.

“I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of
Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as
ye all are this day. And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and
women.” Acts 22.3,4.

Paul was an Israelite; he was a Pharisee who was to be a defender of truth, and very zealous in his cause against
what he believed was error. Those who he saw as enemies of the truth, he had delivered to be destroyed,
because he failed to recognize them as part of the body. Paul was like a white blood cell that attacked and
destroyed cells that were part of the body. As to him they were seen as an enemy even though they were a
blessing.

“And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high
priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they
were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus:
and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice
saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I
am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” Acts.9.1-5.

The auto - immune diseases show to us that the body can, in fact, (like the church fight against itself and tare
down that which God is trying to build up. We need to keep this in mind that we do not direct our warfare
against those who are part of the church, even though some members may appear on the outside to be an enemy.

Here we have a classic case of an auto-immune response, where white blood cells attack healthy cells. Just like
the white blood they are carrying out orders that it is programmed to do, however in so doing it is tearing down
the body in the process, though it may think it is defending it. “And I persecuted this way unto the death,
binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.” Acts.22.4. This was the state of Paul, zealous for the
defense of the body but failing to recognize that he was the enemy of it. However the grace of God worked on
Paul and he was able to say: “For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because
I persecuted the church of God. “But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed
upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which
was with me.” 1Cor.15.9,10.
Once Paul saw the glory of the Lord he fast for three days, Acts.9.9, this is a good way to also to help the
recovery of auto-immune disease, to fast for a few days. It is not recommended to go on such an extreme fast as
Paul, however a three day fast on fruit or vegetable juices is a very good way to improve one’s condition,
however it is advised that in serious cases that caution be exercised and that one has experienced help to observe
the fast, if it is necessary.

Just like Paul, we need to have our eyes opened and be cleansed from our sins, which will then lead us to
recognize the true followers of God. When the body is cleansed from impurities it will not turn upon itself, and
so too, will the church when it is totally cleansed of it’s sin, not turn on its members. It’s attention should be on
eradicating sin from the environment that is closest at hand.

LYMPH NODES: The lymph nodes are an essential part of our immunity and perform the role of cleansing
the blood, and shows us the role of Christ in cleansing us from sin, “I will cleanse their blood that I have not
cleansed: for the Lord dwelleth in Zion.” Joel 3.21.

When man sinned his blood became impure, and therefore in order for his blood to become clean again he had
to receive new blood. As the life is in the blood, Lev 17.11, and man’s life is unclean, Isaiah 64.6, it therefore
requires the blood of Jesus to cleanse us of all sin, 1st John 1.9.

With a few exceptions, most lymph nodes occur in groups or clusters in certain areas, and contain many white
blood cells which carry out the role of cleansing the blood from pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses. You
may have experienced swelling of the submandibular lymph nodes during a sore throat, or as a result of an
infected tooth. The lymph nodes are designed for two important functions: defense and white blood cell
formation.

With a few exceptions, most lymph nodes occur in groups or clusters in certain areas, and contain many white

may have experienced swelling of the submandibular lymph nodes during a sore throat, or as a result of an
infected tooth. The lymph nodes are designed for two important functions: defense and white blood cell
formation.

When lymph nodes are inflamed like the tonsils for example, they are often removed surgically. Although this
removes the unpleasant symptom, it doesn’t however focus on the cause, and can make the person more
susceptible to colds and flu, as the lymphatic tissue that was removed, was responsible for the engulfing of the
pathogens.

Sometimes a lady will develop breast cancer, and her lymph nodes become infected with cancer cells, and so an
operation is performed to remove them from the breast area. This becomes very dangerous to the woman, as her
defense is departed from her.

THYMUS:

The thymus is a small lymphoid tissue organ located in the mediastinum, extending upward, in the midline of
the neck. It is composed of lymphocytes and plays a critical role in the body’s vital immunity mechanism.
Firstly it is a source of lymphocytes before birth and is then especially important in the “maturation” or
development of specialized lymphocytes that then leave the thymus and circulate to the spleen, tonsils, lymph
nodes, and other lymphatic tissues. These T-lymphocytes are critical to the functioning of the immune system
and are the elite armed forces of the body that defend it from intruders. The thymus is like military camp where
they become specialized to perform certain functions in the body.

The thymus is a place where white blood cells are trained for a future place in the body to perform in a certain
way for the defense of the body. This is like the school of the prophets where they receive their instruction so
that one day they may be used in a mighty way for the cause of God in church capacity. Just like lymphocytes
that are trained up in the way they should go, so likewise is it to be with our children, Proverbs 22.6.

TONSILS: “...I AM SET FOR THE DEFENSE OF THE GOSPEL.” Philippians 1.17

Another defense tissue of the body is the tonsils, which is the first line of defense from the exterior and as such
are subject to infection. “When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he
choose of all the choice men of Israel and put them in array against the Syrians: and the rest of the people he
delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.
And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but it the children of Ammon be too
strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.” 2nd Samuel 10.9-11. We can use this story to illustrate a
spiritual truth of the tonsils, as God has given them as a front line for defense, and if the palatine tonsils are
overcome in the fight against the enemy then the pharyngeal, or lingual tonsils will assist in the battle and vice
versa.

Masses of lymphoid tissue called tonsils are located in a protective ring under the mucous membranes in the
mouth and back of the throat. They help protect us against bacteria that may invade tissues in the area around
the openings between the nasal and oral cavities. The palatine tonsils are located on each side of the throat. The
pharyngeal tonsils, are known as adenoids, and thought in the past to be an unnecessary (leading many to have
them surgically removed) have been found to have a special role in the defense of the body.

SPLEEN:

The spleen is the largest lymphoid organ in the body, and is located high in the upper left quadrant of the
abdomen lateral to the stomach. The spleen has a very rich blood supply and may contain over 1 pint of blood.

After entering the spleen, blood flows through dense, pulplike accumulations of lymphocytes. As blood flows
through the pulp, the spleen removes by filtration and phagocytosis many bacteria and other foreign substances,
destroys worn out RBCs and salvages the iron found in hemoglobin for future use, and serves as a reservoir for
blood that can be returned to the circulatory system when needed.

ANTIBODIES:
“But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who
shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that brought them, and bring upon themselves swift
destruction.”
2nd Peter 2.1

Definition: Protein compounds that are normally present in the body, which combine with antigens (which are
usually foreign proteins,) just as a key fits into a keyhole.

FUNCTIONS: In simple terms antibodies change the antigens so that they are rendered harmless to the body.
To do this an antibody must first bind to its specific antigen, neutralizing its poisonous nature. This uniting of
the antibody with an antigen can show us a spiritual lesson of how Jesus dealt with sin, as He was made “to be
sin for us who knew know sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in him”, 2nd Corinthians 5.21.
He saw sin come in to the body, (His church) when Lucifer rebelled and became a foreign invader to the body of
Christ, and was cast out of heaven to the Earth, Revelation 12.9. Although Satan could not infect his evil in the
kingdom of heaven, he found greater success to establish his kingdom here on Earth. The only way God could
rid this antigen (antichrist) from his church on Earth was to take upon Himself the form of a servant and unite
Himself with all the trouble (sin) that this antigen did cause. In so doing, though He had to die himself, He was
viewed by His own people as one that was the cause of their trouble, Luke 23.5.

Whatever is foreign and can’t be recognized by the body is looked upon as an enemy and is bound by
antibodies, which alert other white blood cells to their presence. When Jesus came to His church He was not
recognized as part of the body by the watchman (WBC’s) and was regarded as a threat to the whole of the body.
“And one of them, named Cai’phas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at
all, nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation
perish not”. John 11.49-50. It wasn’t long afterwards that Jesus was bound, as an antigen to an antibody, Mark
15.1, and carried away to be punished as an enemy without mercy.

Dear reader, if we fill our bodies with poison, whether it be physical, spiritual, or mental poison we are not
going to recognize the real antigen (antichrist) when he comes, but will unite ourselves with him, thinking we
are all right when we are all wrong. Let us not be like Pilate who though he found no fault with Him, yet he
delivered him to those that did, and became partaker of their evil deeds, who hung him on a tree and spat upon
his face.

I urge you my friend to bind yourself to Jesus today and you’ll never walk alone tomorrow.
