CDM
The project uses an extensive geothermal reservoir adjacent to the Wayang Windu twin volcano to deliver reliable, clean and
renewable electricity to the state electricity grid. It is a pivotal project for Indonesia in taking advantage of its vast geothermal
resources and renewable energy potential.
The Project
after a 7.3 magnitude earth quake that hit the area in Septemeber
reservoir and send the naturally hot fluid to steam turbine units.
The activity itself is the second phase expansion of the power
plant and involves the installation of an additional 117 MW
steam turbine, periphery equipment and a generator unit to
deliver approximately 950 GWh of additional electricity annually
to the national grid. The plant is already the largest geothermal
power station in Indonesia. The project reduces greenhouse
gas emissions through the displacement of fossil fuel electricity
generation with a clean, renewable energy source.
Additional Benefits
In addition to reducing emissions, the project owner has
dedicated significant resources to helping develop many of the
local communities in the 13 villages in the Pengalengan district
and improving the surrounding area.
This included an education initiative providing 6,500 scholarships
for students (both from low income backgrounds and based on
academic achievement) with an additional 1,500 in 2010-11. The
initiative also works with higher education providers, including
collaborating with a local university to provide hard skills training in

the world and one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gas emissions
energy as a substitute for oil and coal, the high costs associated with
about 12 billion barrels of oil). Currently, the country only has an installed
production capacity under 1,200 MW, representing less that 5% of
Indonesias electric power and about 2% of the countrys total energy
supply. The government understands the advantages of geothermal
power and aims to add 4,000 MW of its geothermal capacity within the
next ve years and over 9,000 MW by 2025.
