If you-or a loved one -are one of the millions of
people who fall into the Medicare Part D coverage
gap known as the “doughnut hole,” provisions in
the health care law will bring some relief this year.
People who fall into the doughnut hole in 2010 will
automatically receive a $250 rebate check to help
them pay for their prescription drugs and other ex-
penses.
Here are fve things you need to know about this
year’s doughnut hole rebate:
1. Receipts can help you track your spending.
People in Medicare Part D who fall into the cover-
age gap should automatically receive a check after
reaching that threshold, but you should save your
receipts just in case. If you think you’ve reached the
doughnut hole and don’t receive your check within
a few months, having your receipts handy will be
helpful when talking to Medicare.
2. Checks will be mailed automatically. Medi-
care tracks your drug costs for you. Once you reach
the coverage gap, you will receive a check.
3. Protect yourself against scams. If someone
says he or she can help you get your check more
quickly if you pay a fee, immediately report this
scam or any similar fraud to the police or to your
Attorney General. You can fnd the Attorney Gen-
eral’s phone number in the blue pages of the tele-
phone book or online at www.naag.org. You should
also report any suspected scam to Medicare by call-
ing 1 (800) MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
4. Your check will be mailed to the address
Social Security uses to reach you. If you need to
change your address, please call Social Security at
1 (800) 772-1213. If you prefer, a change of address
may also be reported by calling or visiting your lo-
cal Social Security offce.
5. You may be able to save on your prescription
drugs. By entering the name of each of your drugs,
its dosage and how often you take it into AARP’s
Doughnut Hole Calculator (www.aarp.org/dough-
nuthole), you can see when you are likely to enter
the doughnut hole. This tool will also identify less
costly but equally effective drugs available in your
Part D plan and will print out a personalized letter
that will help you begin a conversation with your
physician about switching to lower-cost alterna-
tives.

law, go to www.aarp.org/getthefacts.

1950 – Mrs. Eureka Keyt of Lakev-
iew recently celebrated her 90th
birthday with family and friends
meeting at her home for cake and
ice cream.
Mrs. Mildred Smith, a well-
loved teacher in the Lakeview
school system for the past 30 years,
is retiring. She estimates that over
1,200 students passed through her
classroom in the time she spent in
the school.
1960 – Miss Joan Sanders of
Lakeview left Detroit Saturday to
fly to Honolulu where she will at-
tend the University of Hawaii this
summer.
Jim Larsen of Howard City is
attending Wolverine Boys State
on the campus of MSU. Boys who
have been chosen for high moral
character, clean sportsmanship,
and have potential leadership abil-
ity.
1975 – Miss Janice Knapp of Tru-
fant will spend the summer in Fin-
land as an exchange student for the
Youth for Understanding Program.
Tony Perez of Lakeview re-
cently enlisted in the U.S. Air
Force Delayed Entry Program,
and will begin actively serving his
country this August.
1995 – Lakeview native Scott
Painter has been accepted into the
Michigan State Police Academy.
Miss Mandy Kinsey of Lakev-
iew has been crowned Miss Mont-
calm County, and will begin her
reign at once.
The Last Days of Ancient Sunlight
This is one of the most important books I have read in the last few years. The basics in this book by Thomas
Hartman are that every living thing on this earth is made from sunlight. Plants absorb the sunlight, animals eat the
plants and we eat the plants and animals. All of our body tissues are formed in this way. For thousands of years there
has been a balanced relationship between the amount of sun energy (current local sunlight) that produced food
and fuel and the amount of sun energy that was used.
In the last two hundred years, with the discovery of coal and oil, we have begun to use stored sunlight (ancient
sunlight) to increase food and energy supplies. Coal and oil both come from plants that died and were compressed
under the earth millions of years ago. That is why they are called fossil fuels.
As a result of cheap food and fuel, we have over populated the earth far beyond its ability to provide food and
fuel without using this ancient stored sunlight. Current growth rate is one billion more people (consumers) every
12 years. We have now begun to realize that there is a limited amount of this ancient sunlight and it will eventually
run out or countries will begin to hoard it. It may last 50-100 years at the current rate of consumption, perhaps less.
This is reflected in the fact that food and energy prices have risen dramatically in the last two years.
When I discuss this with people, I find two things. Most people are unaware of the seriousness of this situation and
most people think someone else will fix it. Certainly “necessity is the mother of invention”;
many people are inventing new things that are energy saving; and new forms of energy are
being developed, hydrogen for example. But these new things are in the future a number
of years. In the meantime we need to relieve the energy burden so we have enough oil
and coal to get to the time when there are new, better, cleaner energy sources.
We all must do our part. Reduce consumption. Grow some of your own food. Reduce
driving. Buy locally. Eat less. Turn off your computers, televisions, etc at night. Turn lights
off when you do not need them. Plant some trees. Light only the part of the room you are
using. Don’t buy that new toy right now. Read more, watch less television. Use less heat
or air conditioning. Recycle. Buy less clothing. Drink more water and less pop and juice.
Consume less.
We are programmed to be consumers. Let’s become conservers. There is still time, we
can fix it.

Reggie is a lonely hound
dog who’s looking for a
new home. He’s just one
of the many dogs and cats
available for adoption at the
Montcalm County Animal
Shelter in Stanton. Reg-
gie is a rat terrier dog with
mainly white fur. His face
is black with brown around
his mouth and eyes. This dog
is already housebroken, and appears to be good with children,
other dogs, and even cats. Reggie loves attention, and would
make an excellent companion for an older person or a family
with lots of love to give. His shelter ID# is 10-06-57.
Many other dogs besides Reggie are available to be adopted,
and plenty of cats too.
Go online to
www.petfinder.com/shelters/montcalm.html
for a full list of adoptable animals.
There is a $40 adoption fee for dogs, $20 for cats, as well as a refund-
able spay/neuter deposit ($50 for dogs, $25 for cats) unless the ani-
mal is “fixed” already. New animals are brought into the shelter on
a daily basis, so if the one you want is gone by the time you call,
the Montcalm County Animal Shelter will do its best to find you
a dog or cat that matches what you’re looking for. The Montcalm
County Animal Shelter is open to the public Mon-Fri 12:30pm to
5pm, except Weds 12:30pm to 7pm. Call (989) 831-7355 or (616)
225-7355 for more information.
