This handbook contains a brief history of the
AdZU College of Law and the governing rules of the
The students enrolment is considered not only
an assurance of his/her determination to make the
most out of the opportunities offered for his/her
education but also acquiescence to abide by all the
rules and regulations and traditions of the College.

nurtures faith, culture and environment, a Mindanao
fully integrated in a country that is governed with
integrity, providing total human security especially to
the poor and the hungry, as it engages in local and
global solidarity: a new Mindanao at the heart of a
new Philippines.


Ateneo de Zamboanga University realizes this

vision by its twofold mission of (1) advancing
leadership education and (2) advocating social
always drawing out from the best of our Filipino,
Catholic and Jesuit tradition:
Filipino in the promotion of a deep love of country,
as expressed in active citizenship, and cultural and
ecological stewardship of all the nation's tangible and
intangible heritage, with a special dedication to the
wellbeing of island Mindanao;
Catholic in the profession of faith in the God of
Jesus Christ, who reveals himself in the wonders of
creation, in the history of salvation, in his word and
sacrament, in the struggle for liberation, in devotion to
Mary, in communion with the Church and friendship
among all peoples of dialogue; and

As a College of Law, the Ateneo de Zamboanga
University College of Laws mission is the formation of

men and women honed by the exacting standards of

Jesuit educational institutions into men and women of
competence, committed to the cause of the rule of law,
and conscious of their vital role in society and in their
duty to serve the community, and with a deep and
abiding faith in God.

Sometime in the early part of 2009, after

getting the go-signal from its Board of Trustees to
explore the possibility of opening up a College or
School of Law, an AD HOC Committee was formed by
the University President. Principally, it was to gather
information and come up with a report on the
possibility of opening up a College or School of Law in
the University.
On the recommendation of the AD HOC
Committee, the Board of Trustees passed BOT

RESOLUTION NO. 2010:14 on February 27, 2010,

approving the opening of the College of Law.
Because there was a moratorium on the
opening of new schools of law, AdZU decided to open a
law school in consortium with Xavier University
Ateneo de Cagayan, Cagayan de Oro City. On March
23, 2011, Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan,
Cagayan de Oro City, applied for authority to open and
operate a branch in Zamboanga City with Ateneo de
Zamboanga University as its venue.
On May 18, 2011, a certificate of authority to
establish a branch of law school in Ateneo de
Zamboanga University was granted to the Xavier
University Ateneo de Cagayan College of Law, with a
One-Dean-One-Curriculum policy through Government
Permit No.28 series of 2011. The authority further
provided that the school shall be named Xavier
University College of Law Zamboanga.
In June 2011, the College of Law in AdZU
commenced operating as Xavier University College of
Law Zamboanga. It continued to operate as such for
School Years 2011-2012, 2012-2013 and 2013-2014.
On Dec. 4, 2013, AdZU re-instated its
application. After an inspection and interview
conducted by the Legal Education Board Members,
Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) was granted
the permit to open a law school through an order dated
January 13, 2014.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University College of

Law uses two (2) types of seals. On the left is the
shield embroidered on the academic robe, while the
one on the right is the seal used in the College
Stationery. It was designed by Fr. Edwin U. Castillo,

The Chevron is the white-and-black check

pattern of the Arms of Xavier. It is included to
indicate the historical beginnings of the AdZU College
of Law, linking it to Xavier University-Ateneo de
Cagayan. The Wolves-and-Pot that is represented
beneath the chevron of Xavier is the central symbol in
the seal of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University,
together with the Medallion of the Name of Jesus. It is
the element in the shield that identifies the graduate
as from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The pot
symbolizes the generosity of the Loyola family,
reminding us of the Prayer for Generosity of St.
Ignatius. The word Loyola is a contraction of the
Spanish words lobos y olla, wolves and pot. From the
Medallion of the Monogram of Jesus extends the scale
of Justice on either side. It is the element that
identifies the College of Law and its thrust to form
Ignatian Lawyers. Blue and White are the colors of the

He is the Chief Administrative Official of the
College of Law appointed by the President upon the
recommendation of the Vice-President for Academic.

He assists the Dean in the administration of
the College of Law and is in charge of the day-to-day
operations. He shall evaluate the students through his
semestral assessment of a students academic
performance. He may exercise such other powers as
maybe delegated to him.

He/ She assists the Dean in the enforcement of
implementation of the co-curricular activities of the
College of Law, and is in charge of the disciplinary and
academic records of the students. He/ She may exercise
such other powers as maybe delegated to him/her by
the Dean or Associate Dean.

Assists the Dean and Associate Dean in the
scheduling of classes, information dissemination
among the members of the faculty of their respective
assignments, and taking care of the faculty and
students records.
Assists the Dean and Associate Dean in the
conduct of Bar Operations Activities and other
activities initiated by the College. She may perform
such other functions as may be delegated to her.


This committee interviews applicants for

admission to the College. It shall also deliberate upon
all issues concerning student retention. It is composed
of the Dean as the Chairman and two (2) senior faculty

This committee hears complaints against
students for disciplinary infractions and recommends
sanctions to the Dean. It is composed of two (2) senior
faculty members and one (1) representative from the
student government.



The College of Law (COL) operates in the Fr.
Manuel Sauras SJ Hall. The building is named in
memory of the Spanish Jesuit Priest who first ran the
Ateneo de Zamboanga when it was still Escuela
Catolico in 1912. This concrete four-storey building
was blessed on 29 July 2012. The COL administrative
office, conference room, faculty lounge and 3
classrooms are found on the third floor. The COL
Library, Moot Court, Students Lounge, Digital
Classroom and one standard classroom are located on
the fourth floor. The building also houses the Caf
Atenista on the first floor; AdZU Multi-Purpose
Cooperative Office, MS Conference Room and Caf
Atenista food court on the second floor, while the roof
deck is the Sauras Fitness Center (SFC).

Administrative Office
The administrative office houses the office of the
Dean as well as that of the administrative assistant,
secretary and office support staff.

COL Conference Room

Beside the COL administrative office is the
COL conference room. It is reserved for meetings held


by the Dean, administrative staff and/or faculty


Faculty Lounge
The faculty lounge has its own rest room, a
lounger, dining table and chairs, refrigerator and
eating utensils for the professors use while waiting for
their classes or having short meetings with other
faculty members, the Dean or students.

Moot Court
The moot court is used by the senior students to
acclimatize them to the court setting. The lower
classmen also use the moot court during mock trial
activities incorporated in their subjects.

Digital Classroom
The middle room on the fourth floor is the
digital classroom. It is equipped with a Smart tv, a
camera, LAN internet connection and a router. It is
used for conducting classes through the internet by
Manila-based professors and when Zamboanga-based
professors are out of town. Online review sessions for
graduates are also being run here. Film viewing and
other visual materials to be used in class are also
shown here.


College of Law Library

The Law Library is located at the fourth floor of
the Fr. Manuel Sauras SJ Hall. It has a floor area of
169 sq.meters and a seating capacity of 50. It has a
collection of around 420 law books arranged by subject,
2 sets of codals (24 volumes),175 volumes of the
Philippine Reports and an updated and complete set of
SCRA. Four (4) desktop computers are available for the
students use. All computers have access to internet
connectivity to help the students in their research.
The Law Library is open from 10:00 am to 7:00
pm during regular semesters from Monday-Friday
while 10:00 am to 2:00 pm during Saturday. During
Summer, it is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm from
Monday Friday and 1:00-5:00 pm during Saturday.

Discussion Room/Students Lounge

Inside the Library, a discussion room/students
lounge is situated. It is available for the students use
for a group discussion or meetings regardless of the
agenda of the meeting. Restrooms are also found at the
back portion of the library for the convenience of the
students using the library or the students lounge.
Media Services
Video, audio and digital materials for academic
purposes are also available upon request with the
University Audio-Visual Office. The College of Law
Library uses E-Scra to aid students in their research.
Laptops and LCD projectors are also available upon
request from the administrative office to be used in
classroom activities, group discussions and official
meetings of the law student government.


Classes in the College of Law are on semestral
basis. The first semester of the school year is from
June to October and the second semester is from
November to March. Each semester is composed of 18
weeks. A 3-unit subject completes a total of 54 class


All incoming freshmen and sophomore students

are required to attend the English Enhancement
Program (EEP) scheduled before the start of a school
year. EEP for the incoming freshmen run for three (3)
weeks prior to the start of regular classes while EEP
for the sophomores is conducted for one (1) week
before the start of regular classes.

involved. The professor lectures on the finer as well as
the doubtful points of the law, and the proper
interpretation, construction, harmonization and
application of conflicting or apparently conflicting legal
Section 1. The AdZU COLLEGE OF LAW (COL)
admits only those applicants who pass the Law School
Qualifying Test (LSQT) and a Panel Interview to get a
glimpse of each passing applicants character and
personality in order to assess if he/she can profit from


the intellectual, social, and spiritual opportunities

offered by the college.
Section 2. An applicant for admission to the law
course must be a Filipino citizen and should have
satisfactorily completed from an authorized and
recognized university or college any four-year course of
study prescribed for a bachelors in arts or sciences.
Section 3. All students entering the AdZU COL for
the first time shall take an entrance examination,
which consists mainly of tests of logic, comprehension,
critical thinking, articulation, essay and aptitude for
the law profession. Entrance examinations are given,
upon submission of the requirements for the
Qualifying test, in accordance with the schedule given
by the AdZU Testing Center.

Section 5. As a matter of policy, the AdZU COL does
not accept transferees from other law schools, except in
extremely meritorious cases as may be determined by
the Dean.
Section 6. Admission to the next year level.
Without prejudice to the provisions of Part II Article
11 A. B. C. and, D. (pages 29-30), no student shall be
admitted to the next level unless they shall have
passed the subjects representing 75% of the total
number of units taken in the college as prescribed in
the curriculum; and has obtained a QPI/ WPA of :
At least 78% for all subjects taken for admission to the
2nd year,
At least 80% for all subjects taken for admission to the
3rd year,
At least 80% for all subjects taken for admission to the
4th year.


However, the Dean, in consultation with or

upon recommendation of the Committee on
Admissions and Retention, may lower the applicable
QPI/ WPA for the school year.
Students with poor attendance records or whose
conduct is unsatisfactory shall not be eligible for
Section 7.Two Strike Rule. Any student who drops
or fails in the same subject twice shall be denied
readmission, unless the dropping or failure is for
justifiable reasons as determined by the Dean, in
consultation with the Associate Dean.
Section 1.

Unless otherwise announced by the

College Registrar, in consultation with the Dean, the

regular registration period is the week immediately
preceding the start of the semester. Registration may
be extended up to the third day of the first week of
classes without surcharge, Registration with surcharge
is from the fourth to the sixth day. Registration closes
after the sixth day. Thereafter, registration may be
permitted only for justifiable reasons upon approval of
the Dean.
Section 2. Only the true given name, maternal and
paternal surnames must be used by the student. The


use of an alias or a nickname in any official record is

Married women or widows may use their
maiden and married surname or the latter only as is
now or as may hereafter be provided by law.
A religious should submit an affidavit in
duplicate from a superior on the name given to
him/her at the time of profession.
Section 3. The registration card must be submitted
on the date when the official receipt issued by the
College was stamped paid by the Finance office. The
class cards must be submitted on the same day. An
enrollee who fails to comply herewith shall be marked
absent in all subjects from said date until he actually
starts attending classes. Late enrollees shall be
marked absent from the day class starts until their
actual attendance therein.
Section 4.

The taking of the Summary of Credits

outside the premises of the College is prohibited. Any

student found to have violated this section shall be
subject to sanctions as the Committee on Discipline
may prescribe.









Section 1.Any change of subject shall not be valid

unless done during the first week of the semester by
accomplishing the prescribed form approved by the
Dean and countersigned by the Administrative
Assistant. Once acted upon by the Administrative
office, the copies pertaining to the Dean and the
Registrar should be surrendered to their offices on the
same day.
Section 2.To drop any subject after the period of
registration, the student must fill up an appropriate
form, secure the approval of the Dean and the
endorsement of the Registrar, and submit the same to
the Finance Office for the adjustment of fees.
A student who drops a subject without
accomplishing the requisite form or who drops the
subject after the mid-term examination shall be given
a grade of WP in the subject concerned for purposes
of the computation of the QPI.
Section 3. When a student registers, it is understood
that he is enrolling for the entire semester. A student
who transfer or withdraws, in writing, within two
weeks after the classes shall have begun and who
already paid the pertinent fees in full or on installment
basis may be charged ten percent (10%) of the total
amount due for the term if he withdraws within the
first week of classes, or twenty (20%) if he withdraws
within the second week of classes, regardless of
whether or not he has actually attended classes. The


student may be charged all the school fees in full if he

withdraws anytime after the second week.
However, if the transfer or withdrawal is due to
a justifiable reason as certified by the Dean, the
student shall be charged the pertinent fees only up to
and including the last month of attendance.
Section 4. AdZU COL reserves the right to withhold
the students transfer credentials for failure to fully
settle his financial accounts with the school.


Section 1.

Every student should have an official

identification card which he should carry with him at

all times and be able to show it whenever asked to do
so. Failure to produce it when requested by authorized
school officials shall justify the schools refusal of entry
or its act of requesting the student to leave its
premises, without prejudice to the imposition of
disciplinary sanctions when warranted.
Section 2. Identification cards are to be surrendered
to the Office of the Dean for revalidation during the
registration period of every semester.



Section 1.

A student is classified according to the

units and subjects he has satisfactorily completed

during his law course at the ADZU COL, excluding
AdZU COL requirements.
Section 2. A full-time regular student carries an
academic load of 17 units and 20 units respectively in
the first and second semesters in the first year, 21 and
22 units a semester in the second year, 19 and 20 units
respectively in the first and second semesters in the
third year, 2 units in the summer of third year, and 20
and 19 units in the first and second semesters in the
fourth year, all inclusive of AdZU COL requirements.
Section 3. An irregular student is classified in the
curriculum year where he has more subjects.
A student shall be classified as a completion
student when he has been an irregular student who
has enrolled only to complete his second or third year
subjects during the academic year without enrolling
any other subjects in the next lower or higher year

Enrollment in any subject without the

necessary prerequisite subjects is not valid and will


not be credited regardless of the grade obtained. A

back subject must be given priority at enrollment.
For this reason, no student shall be allowed to
take third year subjects without first having passed all
his first year subjects, unless approved by the Dean for
justifiable reasons.
Section 2. The sequence of subjects as set forth in the
law curriculum should be observed except when
deviation is applied for in writing and approved by the
Dean in writing. Enrollment in the fourth year
presupposes the completion of all subjects in the first,
second, and third years. No student will be admitted
to the fourth year or be permitted to take fourth year
subjects unless he has taken and passed all subjects in
the lower years.
As a general rule, a student has to commence
his studies in the first semester of the first year and
should continue in the progression of subjects as far as
feasible until he completes the course.
In exceptional cases, the Dean may allow a
student to deviate from the approved curriculum, after
having completed the requirements of the first year,
subject to the following specific sequence of subjects:
a. Persons and Family Relations must be taken
BEFORE Wills and Succession.


b. Obligations and Contracts must be taken

BEFORE Property, Torts and Damages,








Instruments Law, and Transportation Law.


Criminal Law I must be taken BEFORE

Criminal Law 2.

d. Constitutional Law I and 2 must be taken





Law, and Administrative Law.






Insurance, Sales, and Lease, Negotiable

Instruments Law, Credit Transportations,




Titles and Deeds must be taken BEFORE

h. All subjects in the first, second, and third

years should be taken and passed BEFORE
the corresponding review courses in the
fourth year.
The College of Law will administer midterm
and final examinations every semester. The schedules
will be determined by the Dean in consortium with the
University Registrar. It will be posted in the COL
Bulletin Board.
a. Special Examination. This is allowed for a
student who, for valid reasons, failed to take the
mid-semestral examinations. In any case, the
professor may opt to consider the students final
examination grade minus 10% as his midsemestral examination grade.
In no case shall this be granted to a
student more than twice in the entire term of
study (4 years).*Revised 05252015*
Section 1. The mechanics for taking all examinations
are covered by the following rules:
a. The student should use only fountain or sign
pens, not ball point pens. The color of the
ink must be black, blue-black, or dark blue.


b. The student should write only on one side of

the paper, that is, on the page at the right
when the test booklet is opened.
c.The student shall never tear out, remove, or
fold any page of the examination booklet.
d. When erasing, the student should draw one
horizontal line across the word or words to
be erased. He should never make criss-cross
lines or other marks.
e.The student should never skip or leave blank
lines or spaces except between answers to
different questions or answers to different
sub-questions of the same main question.
f. The student shall maintain a left margin of
about 1-1/4 and a right margin of about .
Section 2. Rules on Re-scheduling of Examinations.
The schedule of examinations as well as the room
assignments shall be announced by the Administrative
Office. In the case of irregular students with
examinations scheduled at overlapping hours, they
shall seek a rescheduling of the same subject to the
prior approval of the Dean.

Each student in the College of Law shall be
rated using the numeric system on classroom and
examination performances. These rates shall be
converted to point system for purposes of official
Transcript of Records (TOR).
The aforementioned notations (Excellent, Very
Good, etc.) shall be measured based on the following
criteria, the details of which are still under evaluation.
1. Completeness and quality of work;
2. Conceptual understanding;
3. Critical thinking process;
4. Creativity and Innovativeness
5. Communication Skills
6. Character


Section 1. The following formula shall be used for

computing grades:

MIDTERM GRADE of the semester :

Recitation and Written Exams for the first half

midterm examination grade
= MIDTERM GRADE of the semester

FINAL GRADE of the Semester :

The professors are not allowed the liberty of
deviating from the grading system prescribed in this
section without the approval of the Dean.
Except for the rule on the maximum number of
absences per subject, the absence of a student shall not
be considered in the computation of his grade although
nothing in the section shall prohibit the professor from
granting incentives relative to attendance.
Section 2. The professors shall submit to the Office of
the Dean the final grades of students within thirty (30)
days from the date of the examination.










reconsideration of grades:
a. Requests for reconsideration of grades
must be in writing, addressed to the
Dean, and must be made within two
weeks after the release of the grades by
the Office of the Dean. Such request for
reconsideration shall be referred to the
professor concerned for recommendation
prior to the Deans action therein.
b. After the submission of the grades,
professors shall no longer reconsider or
change the same except in case of a
clear error in the mathematical
computation and subject always to the
approval of the Dean.
c. Students are strictly prohibited from
professors, verbally or in writing,
whether personally or through anybody,
reconsideration. Violation thereof shall
be reported by the professor to the Dean
and shall mean automatic denial of the
request. However, a conference may be
held among the Dean, the professor
concerned, and the student requesting
such reconsideration.


Section 4.EXIT GRADE

Any student who will not be readmitted in the
succeeding academic year by reason of any deficiency
in the QPI, the two-strike rule and/or the three-flunk
rule and intends to transfer to another law school may
obtain an exit grade or a passing grade of 75% in any
of the subjects he failed during the immediately
preceding academic year provided that he failed in not
more than three (3) subjects for the entire semester
and has not obtained a grade of less than 70% in the
subject, unless the Dean allows otherwise.

may participate in the graduation ceremonies.

Absence during the Graduating Class

is a ground for the withholding of honors, awards, and
the AdZU COL Diploma.


Section 1. Academic Honors. To qualify for academic

honors, a candidate for graduation must meet the
following requirements.

A. Academic Performance
Quality Point Index (QPI) and Minimum Grade
For Summa Cum Laude- QPIof at least
93.00% with no grade less 88.00%.

For Magna Cum Laude-QPIof at least

90.00% with no grade less 85.00%.

For Cum Laude-QPI of at least 88.00%

with no grade less than 80.00%.

For Honorable Mention- QPI of at least

85.00% with no more than two (2) grades
below 80.00% but not less than 75.00%.

B. Academic Load


A candidate must have carried full academic

load as indicated in the curriculum or must have
taken at least 18 units every semester.
Section 2. Special awards. Special awards per subject
will be given to the student with the highest average
grade and with no grade lower than 85 %.
The average grade will be computed based on
the grades acquired within the four (4) years of the
course computed on the average based on the
respective weight per subject.






To maintain quality standards for academic
excellence, the following shall be applied:
A. All students in the First Year must not have
a grade lower than 75%(3.0) in every subject for
both semesters. They should at least have an

In order to ensure quality academic output, the
AdZU COL shall adopt the following rules on failures:
Students who drop or incur three failures in any
subject in a given semester shall not be allowed to reenroll in the AdZU COL.
A. Students who drop or fail in the same

failure is for justifiable reasons as
determined by the Dean;
B. No student shall be allowed to incur more
than six (6) failures in his/her entire Law
course otherwise he/she shall not be
allowed to enroll in the AdZU COL.




Section 1. A student who withdraws voluntarily from

the College is entitled to his transfer credentials
provided he secures a clearance from all required
offices. Only when all the necessary signatures have
been obtained will his withdrawal be considered
effective subject to the provisions of Article 8 Section 4.
If a student leaves without filing or fully processing an
application for withdrawal or temporary leave of
absence, the student shall be given a grade of 65 in
all subjects he enrolled during the semester.
Section 2. A certificate of transfer is issued only once
and the request for its issuance should be done by the
person concerned. If it is lost or misplaced, the
students concerned will be required to execute an
affidavit that said credential was lost or misplaced and
that it has never been used for enrolment in another
school, either local or foreign.



Section 1. The transcript of records is sent from one
school to another. It cannot be hand-carried unless
there is a written authorization from the Registrar of
the school to which the student has transferred.
Section 2. The transcript of records may be issued to
the student (1) for purposes of employment; (2) for
taking government examinations; (3) for personal
reference; or (4) for studies abroad. If issued for any of
the aforementioned reasons, it shall be marked Valid
Only For Purpose Applied For.




Section 1. The rules of order and conduct, more in the

spirit of fatherly care than of police surveillance, are
prescribed as means to an end. The purpose is to
inculcate in the students respect for authority and to
develop in them a true sense of values traits
necessary in the formation of a true Atenean Christian

Article 2. DRESS CODE

Section 1. Attire for the Gentlemen:

a. Long sleeves polo with coat and tie or long
sleeves Barong Tagalog, and leather shoes.
b. Neat and descent haircut shall be required.
Hair that covers the ears and/or nape of the
neck is not allowed.
Section 2. Attire for the Ladies:


a. Long sleeves blouse with coat and closed

shoes with or without heels.
b. Skirts shall not be two inches above the

No shaved head is allowed.
Section 3. Prohibited attire: For both the ladies and
a. Slitted skirts, tattered jeans, tight fitting
pants, short pants, round neck shirts,

of law students are prohibited.

Section 4. Students who incur violations of this
Article shall be denied entrance to the school premises
except when there are valid reasons for the student not
to follow the provisions of the same.
Section 5. The dress code may be SUSPENDED at
such times as the Dean may prescribe.


Section 1. Regular attendance at all classes and
approved extra-curricular or co-curricular activities is
one of the most important obligations of a student.
Hence, every student is required to attend all
scheduled exercises or activities of his class.
Section 2. Students must present a letter of excuse for
their absences in any subject or class activity due to
sickness, operation, hospitalization, in which case a
medical certificate, under oath unless issued by a
Government physician, should be presented and the
Dean should be informed during the period of illness.
Section 3. The class beadle must keep a record of the
absences and tardiness of his classmates in the beadle
form to be procured at the Office of the Dean and
signed by the professor concerned after each session.
Excused or unexcused absences must be recorded since
upon exceeding the maximum allowable absences, a
student is automatically dropped from the rolls of the
subject concerned. Students are expected to keep track
of their absences and tardiness.
A Student who incurs an unexcused absence
shall be given a recitation grade of 50 in the subject


Section 4. The maximum numbers of hours of absence

for every subject are as follows:
20 hours in a 5-unit subject
16 hours in a 4-unit subject
12 hours in a 3-unit subject
8 hours in a 2-unit subject
4 hours in a 1-unit subject
Excused and unexcused absences shall be
counted in the computation of absences. The Dean may
take exceptions in the case of students who belong to
the upper 30% of the class based on available grades or
as the professor may determine.
Section 5. A student is held responsible for whatever
is taken up in class during his absence. He should
fulfill all assignments given, regardless of the reason
for the absence.
Section 6. A student dropped due to excessive
absences from three subjects is automatically dropped
from the rolls and shall not be allowed to proceed with
the study of Law in the AdZU COL.
Section 7. Students who voluntarily withdraw from
any subject or the course, or are dropped due to
absences, before the mid-term examinations or before
the period set for such examinations will only be
considered dropped.


Students who voluntarily withdraw from any

subject or the course, or are dropped due to absences,
after the mid-term examinations, or after the period
set for such examinations will be given a grade of 65
in the subject concerned or the course for the year,
unless the Dean, for justifiable reasons, provide
Section 8. A student who wishes to be excused from
class or from any compulsory activity must file a
written request with the Dean beforehand. The
student shall be considered excused only when such
written request bears the signature of the Dean.
Signature of the adviser for the activity concerned
shall not suffice.
Failure to comply with this section shall result
in the making of the student as having incurred an
unexcused absence for the session or subject

Section 9. Boycott. Whenever 30% or more of the

members of a class are absent, it is prima facie
presumed that they absented themselves pursuant to a
conspiracy, concerted agreement, or group decision to
boycott or absent themselves from the class. Any
student who claims otherwise has the burden of
proving the same.


Section 10. The offender in Section 9 hereof shall be

given a recitation grade of 50 in the subject involved
for the first offense; two 50s for the second offense;
and referral to the Committee on Discipline for the
third offense for the determination of the appropriate


Section 1. A student who arrives after the opening

prayer shall be marked late. A student who comes to
class ten minutes late shall be marked absent. The ten
minutes shall be counted after the opening prayer.
However, he may be permitted to attend class upon
submission of an admission slip from the Deans office
or at the discretion of the professor concerned.
Section 2. If a professor fails to arrive in class within
fifteen minutes after the scheduled time for a one-hour
session or thirty minutes for two (2) or more hours
session, the class beadle shall notify the Dean or
Associate Dean who shall thereafter decide whether or
not to dismiss the class. During this period, students
should stay in the classroom. Students who leave the
classroom before the decision of the Dean shall be
marked absent on the day concerned.


Article 5. OBEDIENCE

Section 1.Prompt, exact and courteous obedience is

expected of an Ateneo student at all times. An Atenean
obeys and submits to authority rather than to the
person exercising it, hence he should obey with equal
promptness anyone, even a fellow student, to whom
authority has been delegated.
Section 2. Faculty members and college officials are
authorized to enforce these rules of conduct. Although
normally a Professor handles his own disciplinary
problems, more serious infractions should be reported
to the Dean or Administrative Assistant.


Section 1. Every student must consult the bulletin

board at least once a day. Ignorance of a notice posted
on bulletin board excuses no one from compliance.

Section 2. Bulletin boards are for official use only.

Tampering with notices or posting unauthorized
notices is considered a serious offense.


Section 3. Any student representing any class, club,

or organization posting notices or posters must first
secure the permission of the Dean or Administrative
Assistant. The notice or poster must bear the signature
of the authorizing official and shall be removed
thereafter when required by said authorities.



Section 1.No student may smoke inside the premises

of AdZU COL and within the ADZU campus.
Section 2. Any student who smells of alcoholic drink
is prohibited from entering the school premises and
any such student who is found in the school premises
shall be subject to the penalties as hereinafter
provided. If a student found under the influence of
alcohol violates any rule of the school in that condition,
he shall be dropped from the rolls.
Section 3. Littering of any kind or spitting is
punishable as hereinafter provided.
Section 4. Any student who causes damage to
properties shall be obliged to pay for the damage


without prejudice to the penalties as hereinafter

Section 5. A student shall not block the stairways,
corridors, and doors.
Section 6. Whistling, shouting, and other unnecessary
noise shall be forbidden in the premises of the school.
Any violation of this section shall be subject to the
penalties hereinafter provided.
Section 7. Silence should be maintained in the
library. Violators of this rule shall be deprived of the
use of the library facilities and privileges in addition to
appropriate disciplinary sanctions.
Section 8. Any student who violates any provision of
this Article shall be suspended from classes for three
days for the first offense and one week for every offense


Section 1. Courtesy in the Classroom:

a. Stand when the professor enters or leaves
the classroom.


b. Do not interrupt another students

recitation or the professors lecture until you
are recognized by the professor.
c. Do not leave the classroom while classes are
going on.

Section 2. Courtesy in the Corridors, Auditorium, and

the Church:
a. Do not congregate along the corridors when
classes are going on.
b. Do not stay in the corridors
examinations are going on.


c. In the auditorium, take your seat very

quietly and avoid laughing boisterously
during programs.
d. Enter and leave the church quietly. Avoid
making unnecessary noises and movements
while mass is going on.




Section 1. Any student found guilty of a serious

external moral fault or whose conduct is found to be
subversive of the best interest of the College, or who is
an unwholesome influence on his fellow students may
be dismissed, after due process, at any time during the
school year.

Section 2. The following serious faults are, after due

process, causes for a students suspension or exclusion
from school.
a. Contempt toward or ridicule of religion;
b. Fighting inside or in the vicinity of the
College, or even outside of the campus under
circumstances which cast disrepute on the
c. Possession, exhibitions, or distribution of
subversive, illegal, or immortal publications
writings, or other materials;
d. Writing or drawing obscene pictures on
school property in or out of the premises;
e. Unauthorized use of school property;
f. Cheating in the examinations or helping
others commit the same;
g. Inciting others to be absent from class;

destruction or damaging of school property;

g. Dishonesty such as, but not limited to,

stealing, swindling, cheating, or helping or
inducing others to commit the same offense;
h. Instigating or leading illegal strikes or
activities resulting in the disruption of

school personnel from entering the school
premises or attending classes or discharging
their duties;


Violation of any school regulation or any

misconduct in or within the vicinity of the
school premises while under the influence or
smelling of liquor or any alcoholic drink;

k. Violation of the Dangerous Drugs Act of

Forging or tampering with school records or

school forms, certificates and the likes and
the use of the same.


Section 4. A student under investigation may be

preventively suspended from entering the school
premises if the evidence of guilt is strong and the
school head is morally convinced that the continued
stay of the student during the period of investigation
constitutes a distraction to the normal operations of
the school or poses a risk or danger to the life of
persons and property in the school.







Section 1. Less serious faults committed within the
school year shall be submitted to the Committee on
Discipline , which shall impose the appropriate
sanction after due process.
Section 2. Light offenses shall be recorded by the
Dean, which include, but are not limited to:
a. Use of improper attire;
b. Blocking the passageways;
c. Unauthorized writing on school property;
d. Congregating on the wayside along La
Purisima St. and/or Nuez front of the
main gates and rear gates, respectively;


e. Creating unnecessary disturbances along

the corridors;

Loitering in forbidden places; and

g. Other violations of proper decorum

according to the judgment of the Dean.

Section 2. Repeated commission of light offenses may

be the basis for the imposition of a more serious
disciplinary sanction as may be determined by the
Committee on Dsicipline.

Section 1. When a violation of any of the rules of

conduct is reported to the Dean and he finds probable
cause for disciplinary action, he shall convene the
Committee on Student Discipline, making the
corresponding appointments, and refer the matter
thereto for investigation. The Committee shall duly
inform the party or parties concerned at least 48 hours
in advance of the course of action it intends to take on
the case.


It may receive evidence either oral (testimony)

or in writing (statements or counter-statements of the
parties and/or their witnesses) in whole or in part, and
may require either party to answer the clarificatory
questions of the members of the Committee, but shall
not strictly apply the technical rules of evidence.
However, he/she shall be entitled to be represented by
a counsel if he/she wishes to.
Thereafter, it shall submit to the Dean its
findings and conclusions, together with the statements
or documentary evidence presented to it, making the
corresponding recommendation for the sanction to be
imposed in case the infraction is proved.
The Dean shall approve or disapprove the
recommendation of the Committee and forward the
recommendation and records of cases to the Office of
the President for approval.

Section 2. The Committee is composed of a Chairman

and two (2) members. Two (2) senior faculty members
and one (1) representative from the student
government comprise the Committee. The Dean
appoints one of the Senior faculty members as the
Chairman of the Committee.
In appropriate circumstances, the Dean may
authorize a variation in the membership of the


Committee or the procedural rules in the interest of

Section 3. The recommendation of the Committee,
upon the approval of the Dean and the President shall
be subject to only one Motion for Reconsideration. Such
motion shall be decided by the Dean, subject to the
approval of the President. The decision of the
President on the Motion shall be final and executory
and no further actions shall be taken therein.

Section 4. Procedure for the Hearing of a Case.

The Chairman of the Committee on Student Discipline
starts by explaining the purpose of the hearing. The
Chairman and the members may thereafter ask
questions of the respondent. The defendant may by
himself or through counsel present his /her evidence.
Section 5. No disciplinary hearing can be postponed,
except for highly justifiable reasons to be ruled by the
Committee alone. The Committee may conduct or
continue a hearing even in the absence of the
complainant, but the presence of the respondent shall
be indispensable unless such right has been waived.
Such waiver, however, shall be presumed when the
respondent fails to appear despite the notice served.
Section 6. Unless the Committee finds a need to
conduct further hearings, which will require notice to
the defendant of the purpose, date, time and place


thereof, the Committee shall immediately deliberate

on the basis of the evidence presented.
Section 7. The confidentiality of the proceedings of
the case shall be observed at all times.
