In recent years, the Liberal Bee Jays have
had much better second halves of the season
than the first.
With the new format which started the
league standings over to start July, a strong
second half will be required for the Bee Jays
to earn a berth to the NBC World Series.
Liberal is off to a strong start to the
second season after traveling to Dodge City
Sunday for a double header and earning two
shutout victories, 4-0 and 2-0.
The Bee Jays returned to Brent Gould
Field for the first time in eight days Monday
and completed a three-game sweep of the
As with a 6-5 win.
Liberal also won the season series against
the As, 4-2. Dodge City finished second in
the first half.
Liberal took a 1-0 lead during the annual
Fourth of July game when Jaron Robinson
hit an RBI sacrifice that scored Cale
ODonnell in the second inning.
But the As responded with two in the
third to take the lead.
Liberal regained the lead in the fifth.
Donny Ortiz reached with a one-out walk,
and Brandon Urquizo followed with a
single.
Matt Elsenpeter followed with an RBI
double to tie the game, and Trey Kamachi
gave the Bee Jays the lead with an RBI
single.
Elsenpeter also scored in the inning, and
the Bee Jays had a 4-2 lead.
But the As responded in the sixth with
two runs off a two RBI Zach Moon triple.
The Bee Jays shot right back in the
bottom of the sixth. Owen Taylor led off
with a double, but it appeared the inning
would end without taking advantage of the
hit when Blake Jenkins hit a pop out and
Robinson grounded out.
Timely hitting contributed to the slow
start and disappointing finish in the first
half, but with Jenkins at third with two outs,
Ortiz walked, and Urquizo ripped a double Cale ODonnell, right and Jaron Robinson celebrate after scoring the first run of the game in
