I stand in negation at the resolution at hand.

(Definitions)
Public colleges and universities in the United States should be able to restrict some
constitutionally protected speech.
I will prove this through two contentions:
1. Restricting constitutionally protected speech creates a safe environment for a universitys
students.
2. Restricting constitutionally protected speech preserves the image and reputation of a
university.
Restricting constitutionally protected speech creates a safe environment for a universitys
students. By limiting what a student is able say, it keeps the student from saying morally
unethical content that might offend a peer. University are within their rights to prohibit speech
typically targeted at racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities. Universities through these speech
codes are trying to protect students from content that might upset their fellow classmates and
even themselves. Students normally live on their campus and they want to feel at home when
they are there. If they are feeling verbally attacked then they will not feel so, speech codes help
to ensure that students will be comfortable and safe in their new home. According to
theodysseyonline.com, Speech codes are necessary to have on college campuses because they
help promote a safe and positive learning environment for all students regardless of their
socioeconomic backgrounds. By having speech codes enacted on campuses, Colleges will help
lessen the attitude of intolerance several students may feel about the minority groups who attend
their campuses. Therefore, speech codes would help to enforce consequences on the perpetrating
students threats which would otherwise lead to hate crime violence. By invoking speech codes,

the colleges are protecting students and making the campus a safe environment for all. Many
speech restrictions apply to racial and sexist comments that are viewed as offensive to those
around them. Over many years there have been countless riots, arguments, and disturbances over
one offensive slur that someone has said. For example, one happened just last year at the
University of Pennsylvania involving a racial comment. By restricting hate speech colleges are
creating a safe environment within its campus. Having this safe environment is a very important
part of the college experience and if the college need to impose speech codes to do this, then they
should have the right to do so.
Restricting constitutionally protected speech preserves the image and reputation of a university.
The image of a campus is very important. A universitys reputation is the reason students apply
to a certain college. The students are supposed to represent and display the qualities and morals
of their university. By saying racial or unethical offensive comments that are against the
fundamentals of a certain university, students can hurt the reputation of their university. Since the
university depends on their reputation to attract applicants, then universities should be able to
restrict certain speech. According to thebestschools.org it states The University may restrict
expression that violates the law, that falsely defames a specific individual, that constitutes a
genuine threat or harassment, that unjustifiably invades substantial privacy or confidentiality
interests, or that is otherwise directly incompatible with the functioning of the University. If a
student is saying controversial things that could damage a colleges future then the college has
the right to forbid certain speech. In a world where everyone uses the media, it becomes very
well known when someone says something offense especially when it attracts a lot of attention.
This attention when focused on a college student it also focused on the university they are
enrolled in. No colleges want to be seen in a negative light, so the enforce these speech codes.

Speech codes are enforced to save a colleges reputation and also ensure a colleges future.
Speech codes give the university the ability to discipline the students when they disobey when
the students behavior falls short.
