Bulleh Shah is one of the greatest sufi poets of Punjab. He was also a philosopher
and humanist. Bulle Shahs actual name is Abdullah Shah. Bulle Shah was born in
1680, in a small village Uch, Bahawalpur. His ancestors had migrated from
Uzbekistan.
His father got a job in Pandoke, about 50 miles southeast of Kasur. Bulleh Shah
received his early schooling in Pandoke and moved to Kasur for higher education.
Bulleh Shahs poetry is called the Kafi, a style of Punjabi, Sindhi and Saraiki poetry
used by the Sufis of Sindh and Punjab and even Sikh gurus. Bulleh Shahs poetry
and philosophy firmly criticizes the Islamic religious orthodoxy of his day. Bulleh
Shah basically revolted against religious no-go areas of Muslim Mullah and pleaded
to reach to Allah through love of humanity and tameness of inner self. He died in
1757. His tomb is located in Kasur.
