'Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear, and the blind can see.' Mark Twain.
May is Older Americans Month when we appreciate and celebrate the vitality and aspirations of our older adults and their contribution to our communities. Older Americans Month is a great opportunity to show special appreciation for some of our most beloved citizens. The theme for Older Americans Month 2013 is Unleash the Power of Age. Older Americans are more productive, active and influential, sharing their essential talents, wisdom, and life experiences through participation and volunteerism. This years celebration recognizes the value that older adults continue to bring to our community through their power and participation. Salisbury Council on Aging is joining communities nationwide in celebrating this month with special activities and events. Join us May 13 through May 17 for Free classes Strength Training (Exercise to Music) Yoga, Zumba Gold, Silver Strength, Line Dancing and Zumba Toning. Bring a friend encouraging them to live longer, healthier lives and unleash the power of their age. We will also be offering many free activities throughout May including presentations on Car Fit and Mature Drivers workshop & a continental breakfast May 8, a Tea Social on May 29th, free chair massages on May 1st, a performance from the Sunset Tappers on May 23, ice cream socials, Karaoke and a free birthday lunch with entertainment. Preregister for these fun events and activities. We hope you will join us.
Salisbury Senior Center is participating in the campaign of kindness during Older Americans Month in May. Random acts of kindness, big and small, can make a big difference in someones life. During May, we will encourage that spirit in our Senior Center, knowing that something as simple as paying a compliment can have an impact and make someone smile.
I implore all of our seniors to take the kindness pledge in whatever way you choose by committing random acts of kindness each day in May; sending notes of appreciation, eating lunch with someone new, sharing a good book, forgiving someone, or however you choose. And add your name to our Kindness Pledge board. We hope to inspire people to be more thoughtful and caring, knowing that one act of kindness can lead to another and have a ripple effect in a close-knit community like our Senior Center. No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. What random acts of kindness will you do to make a difference in someones life?

Continental Breakfast May 8, 9:00 am In May we will be talking about driving safety for mature operators. We will be having a formal program put on by Sergeant Bob Roy on May 8, at 9:00 am. I want to get everyone thinking about driver safety and offer a couple of safety tips; Increase your concentration on the road by minimizing distractions. Switch off the radio, minimize discussions with passengers, avoid using cell phones and keep the inside temperature of your car comfortable. Remember that certain prescriptions and over-the-counter medications can impact your vision and alertness. Read drug labels carefully, and check with your doctor about side effects. Please drive safely and we hope to see you on May 8, 2013.
Thomas W. Fowler, Chief of Police
Mature Drivers / Car Fit presented by Sargent Roy May 8th @ 9:00AM, along with a continental breakfast. Car fit is an educational program designed to help older drivers find out how well they currently fit their personal vehicle, highlighting actions they can take to improve their fit, and to promote driver safety and community mobility. A proper fit in ones personal vehicle can greatly increase not only the drivers safety but also the safety of others. Mature drivers is geared for those 55 and older and will include discussions facing senior drivers, requirements to apply for a handicap placard, rules of the road and information about alternative forms of transportation. This presentation incorporates our TRIAD meeting which will include a continental breakfast. Call 978-462-2412 to pre-register. Salisbury Beach Betterment Association donates portable projector to the Senior Center. SBBA President Ray Champagne presented the projector in February to Senior Center Director Liz Pettis. The projector with its built-in speakers and excellent picture quality will greatly enhance our educational and informational seminars. We our very appreciative of our Friends Group, SBBA and to all who contribute to the Salisbury Senior Center.
