Blinkys Random
Thoughts
This actually took place in Charlotte,
North Carolina. A lawyer purchased a
box of very rare and expensive cigars,
then insured them against, among other
things, fire. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars, the lawyer filed a claim against the
insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars
were lost in a series of small fires. The insurance company
refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had
consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued
and WON! Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the
insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge
stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company, in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable
and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire,
without defining what is considered to be unacceptable fire
and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy
and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted
the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the
cigars that perished in the fires. NOW FOR THE BEST
PART... After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!! With his
own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case
being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24
months in jail and a $24,000 fine. This true story won First
Place in last years Criminal Lawers Awards contest. ONLY

ON THE FARM

by Andy Manne

While some farm groups are concerned about potential hardships in relation to trade deals, the
American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) does believe the next administration will be friendlier
to farmers when it comes to government overreach.
During AFBFs annual convention in Phoenix, Don Parrish, senior director of congressional
relations for AFBF, spoke about the Waters of the United States rule and how it is no easy fix.
Were dealing with a final regulation, and what youre going to see is this administration
come in and reconsider what the ultimate regulation says, said Parrish. If they choose to repeal,
This Weeks sponsor:
theyve got to go through a rulemaking to repeal it.
Itll be complicated, but its something we
have to get on the ground and get done.
Parrish believes the Obama administration not
only messed up the policy itself, but they also
messed up the process.
He said the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) must conduct a legitimate cost benefit
analysis and look at the impacts on small business.

HEMLOCK WOOLLY ADELGID SEMINAR TO BE HELD

AT CORNELL COOPERATIVE EXTENSION- On Thursday, February 9th Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren
County will be hosting a seminar on the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.
Mark Whitmore of Cornell University one of the foremost authorities on the wooly adelgid will give a one-and-a-half-hour
presentation starting at 10:00 am at the Cooperative Extension
Education Center. Following his presentation, he will then conduct a field detection workshop at Pack Forest in Warrensburg
from 12:30 pm to 2:00pm. During that time, Mark will detail
what to look for and how to distinguish adelgid damage from
other tree issues. The wooly adelgid has caused a great deal of
damage to hemlock trees across the state. In addition to ecological concerns of a declining hemlock population, the adelgid has
caused millions of dollars in lost revenue to paper and lumber
industries. Marks research is helping to find new ways to combat this threat. In addition, he spends time helping people recognize adelgid damage so that they know they have a problem. For
more information and to register for this program contact Dan
Carusone at 518-623-3291 or 668-4881

THE FRIENDS OF THE NEW YORK STATE MILITARY MUSEUMs
fundraising efforts received a big boost recently with significant
grants from local foundations and a prominent area business to
support the NYS Military Museums development of a major new
exhibition on the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Stewarts Shops,
which donates $7.5 million annually to local charities, and the
Saratoga Foundation each awarded the Friends $10,000 while
the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust presented the Friends a

pay for installation expenses such as exhibit cases and graphics
as well as to support the development of associated educational
programming and interactive video kiosks featuring oral histories
from New York State veterans. We are grateful for these
generous awards, so we can support the Military Museums
exhibit on Korea and Vietnam and help to honor the service and
sacrifice of all of our nations brave men and women who
participated in these conflicts, said David Wallingford, President
of the Friends and a Vietnam War veteran. Entitled Hot Spots
in the Cold War: Korean and Vietnam, the exhibition is scheduled
to open in the late spring or summer of 2017.

STATE COMPTROLLERS REPORT CONCERNING WILTON WATER AND SEWER

AUTHORITY WATER AND SEWER CHARGES (2016M-329) Purpose of Audit was to review
the Authoritys process over water and sewer charges for the period January 1, 2015 through May
31, 2016.
Background
The Wilton Water and Sewer Authority is an independent public benefit corporation located in
Saratoga County. The Authority, which is governed by an appointed five-member Board of Directors,
was established by the State Legislature to serve residents and commercial entities with water and
sewer services. The Authority produces, distributes and sells domestic water and provides sanitary
sewer services to approximately 8,100 residents in the Town of Wilton. The Authoritys recorded
revenue for water and sewer charges were approximately $2.1 million during our audit period.
Key Finding
The Authority did not have written policies in place directing how and when adjustments were to
be applied to customer accounts or to providing guidance about procedures to address enforcing or
waiving late fees and penalties.
Key Recommendation
Adopt written policies that govern the application of billing adjustments and the application of late
fees and penalties. For more info: Phone: (518) 474-4037; Email: localgov@osc.state.ny.us
Address: Office of the State Comptroller, Division of Local Government and School Accountability

QUILTED ALCHEMY: hand made quilts by Susan Rivers January 19 - February 14th @Valley
Artisans Markets Small Gallery 25 East Main Street (Rte 372) Cambridge, NY 12816.Susan
Rivers on Quilted Alchemy: Welcome to my world! Since my early days of beloved blankies and
swatches brought home to me by my Grandfather who worked in the NYC Garment District, fabric
has always held magic for me. Creating with fabric is so much more then cutting material up and
sewing it back together. It is personal expression. It can convey a celebration of joy, be a catharsis
for dealing with loss, or be meditative with purpose and peace in every stitch. For me, one Eight
Pointed Star quilt led to another and down a path of exploration and discovery with many surprises
along the way. I am proud to be part of the fine tradition of quilting and on the forefront of bringing
this quintessential folk art forward. The quilting of our predecessors is not fading away. It is an
evolving art form that has totally embraced modern technology.Join me on this journey in pursuit of
Quilted Alchemy where I will share with you The magic of putting three layers of fabric together
to create something that can comfort and tell a story a story. The magic of what happens when you
add the element of fire. You will be amazed at what an iron can do! I can turn straw into gold and
other astonishing feats. The magic of dyeing fabrics and playing with color and light. The magic of
technology starting with the sewing machine and expanding into the digital age. I think it I can
print it on fabric. Incredible. The magic of the mundane. I can shine a light on the enchanted but
overlooked. Each piece in the show will indicate the magic in me. It is my hope that some element
of this show will speak to you and spark you to create some magic of your own.

relax. Come to Second Chance and
get to know Ruthie today!
Faya is a three year old American
Shelter Dog that is friendly, quiet, and

Just Thinking
By: May Jones

In the January sky, the constellation of Orion is a sight to behold. Orion,

the huntsman in Greek Mythology possessed good looks and was a boastful one. While on a hunting trip with two goddesses, he threatened to kill all
animals on earth. Mother Earth objected and sent a scorpion to kill him.
Once the creature succeeded, the goddesses made a request to Zeus that
Orion be placed among the constellations. Zeus obliged, and as a tribute
to Orion, also placed a scorpion nearby.
Marking the right shoulder of Orion is the red supergiant star named
Betelgeuse. This star is gargantuan a billion of our suns would fit in it. If
it lived in the solar system its surface would engulf the orbits of Mercury,
Venus, Earth and Mars. Its between 450 and 650 light years away and is
the 9th brightest star in the sky. If our humble human eye could see all
wavelengths of radiation, it would be the brightest star in the sky. Betelgeuse has captured the interest of people since antiquity and was noted by
astronomers in the common era to be a yellowish color, suggesting that it
might have been a yellow supergiant at one time.
Betelgeuse is oldvery old about 10 million years old. It shows its age
by being red, and running cooler than the younger and brighter blue star in
Orion named Rigel. Because Betelgeuse is running low on hydrogen, it is
starting to burn heavier elements, and over the next many thousands of
years, its iron core will become too massive, the outer layers will be pulled
inward and the core will collapse resulting in a massive supernova. It will
leave behind a black hole or a neutron star, and will be much brighter than
the full moon here on earth. But even if Betelgeuse became a supernova
today, it would take up to 650 years before we would see it here on earth.
In universe time, that would be just a mere millisecond.
Taking up residence in the night sky are: 14 men and women, 9 birds,
2 insects, 19 land animals, 10 water creatures, two centaurs, one head of
hair, a serpent, a dragon, a flying horse, a river and 29 inanimate objects.
Eighty-eight constellations in all, some containing more than one creature.
What a joy it is to find them.

UNCLE WALLY WONDERS

While everyonewas gearing up for President Trumps inauguration, the Clinton Foundation
made a major announcement last week that went by with almost no notice: For all intents and
purposes, its closing its doors.
In a tax filing, the Clinton Global Initiative said its firing 22 staffers and closing its offices, a
result of the gusher of foreign money that kept the foundation afloat suddenly drying up after
Hillary Clinton failed to win the presidency.
It proves what Ive said all along: The Clinton Foundation was little more than an influencepeddling scheme to enrich the Clintons, and had little if anything to do with charity, either
overseas or in the U.S. That huge bang we heard starting in November was checkbooks being
snapped shut in offices around the world by people who had hoped their donations would buy
access to the next president of the United States.
And why not have those expectations? There was a strong precedent for it in Hillary Clintons
tenure as Secretary of State. While serving as the nations top diplomat, the Clinton Foundation took money from at least seven foreign governments a clear breach of Clintons pledge
on taking office that there would be total separation between her duties and the foundation.
Is there a smoking gun? Well, of the 154 private interests who either officially met or had
scheduled phone talks with Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of state, at least 85 were
donors to the Clinton Foundation or one of its programs.
The Clinton Foundation had taken in $100 million from a collection of Gulf sheikhs and
billionaires, along with millions from private businesses, who expected and received
special access to the State Departments top official, Hillary.
In his 2015 book Clinton Cash, author Peter Schweizer showed how during Hillarys years
in government the Clintons have conducted or facilitated hundreds of large transactions
(either as private citizens or government officials) with foreign governments, corporations and
private financiers. He called the sums going to the Clintons staggering.
Using the Freedom of Information Act, Judicial Watch in August obtained emails (that had
been hidden from investigators) showing that Clintons top State Department aide, Huma
Abedin, had given special expedited access to the secretary of state for those who gave
$25,000 to $10 million to the Clinton Foundation. Many of those were facilitated by a former
executive of the foundation, Doug Band, who headed Teneo, a shell company that managed
the Clintons affairs.
As part of this elaborate arrangement, Abedin was given special permission to work for the
State Department, the Clinton Foundation and Teneo another very clear conflict of interest.
As Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said at the time, These new emails confirm that
Hillary Clinton abused her office by selling favors to Clinton Foundation donors.
The seedy saga doesnt end there. Indeed, there are so many facets to it, some may never be
known. But there is still at least one and possibly four active federal investigations into the
Clintons supposed charity.
Americans arent willing to forgive and forget. Earlier this month, the IBD/TIPP Poll asked
Americans whether they would like President Obama to pardon Hillary for any crimes she may
have committed as secretary of state, including the illegal use of an unsecured homebrew email
server. Of those queried, 57% said no. So if public sentiment is any guide, the Clintons
problems may just be beginning.
Writing in the Washington Post in August of 2016, Charles Krauthammer pretty much
summed up the whole tawdry tale: The foundation is a massive family enterprise disguised as
a charity, an opaque and elaborate mechanism for sucking money from the rich and the
tyrannous to be channeled to Clinton Inc. Its purpose is to maintain the Clintons lifestyle
(offices, travel accommodations, etc.), secure profitable connections, produce favorable
publicity and reliably employ a vast entourage of retainers, ready to serve today and at the
coming Clinton Coronation.
Except, now there is no Clinton Coronation. So theres no reason for any donors to give
money to the foundation. Those closed checkbooks lay bare the fiction of a massive charitable organization, and shows the foundation for what it was: a scam to sell for cash the
influence of the Democrats pre-eminent power couple. As far as the charity landscape goes,
the Clinton Global Initiative wont be missed. Nor will the Clintons.

THE SALEM/SHUSHAN FUEL FUND is a well-established charity

that has helped hundreds of families over the past several years
meet their home heating needs in times of trouble. During the
2016 calendar year, the Fuel Fund helped 37 families. That
amounted to almost $17,000! The donations were due to the
generosity offered through many, many small gifts, and several
large gifts. They were: produce and food donations for the
dinners and luncheons, time, energy, and talents of Rotary and
other community members who worked on dinners, luncheons,
and concerts, memorial gifts, gifts from individuals, groups, and
organizations. The people who humbly receive gifts from the
Fuel Fund express overwhelming thanks to the Salem/Shushan
community for help in a time of need!
