Chapter 1 Project

For our project we did a survey that consist of our entire stats class population.
The class has only seventeen students who completed the survey. The question was,
On average of a two week span during the summer, how many times do you go to
applebee's? So the variables in this study would be the number of times you go to
applebees. The individuals of this study we know go to applebees a lot, so by
knowing how many times they go per two weeks. We can determine how popular
applebee's is in the class. The survey we did would be a quantitative study, because
the number of times you go to applebees in two weeks, would be a number.
In this study we used all the individuals in the stats class, which would make this
a population because its everyone. If our study was for the entire school, this would
only have been a sample. For our study we didnt really have a simple random
sample because we surveyed everyone in the class, so everyone was asked the same
question. Another thing we tried to avoid in our study was bias. We tried to avoid this by
not pressuring anyone into saying more or less than their real amount. We also worked
to make sure we had no error of counting the right number for each person. We
checked the data a few times to make sure it was correct before making it into a chart.
My partner and I also made sure there was no undercoverage by surveying the entire
population if the stats class. The question we asked to the stats class would be a
survey because we didnt watch anything like a observational study, and we didnt
perform an experiment to collect data.
Our study was a ratio level of measurement. It is ratio because it has a true
zero because you cannot go to applebees a negative amount of times like an interval. .
It isnt a nominal or ordinal study as well because their is no order to the study, and
there is not grouping. In our study we had no control group. We did a survey, and not an
experiment so we had no reason to have a control group. Also we wouldnt have a
placebo effect either because we didnt do an experiment, and we asked the same
question to everyone, the same way. In our survey a double blind study wouldnt be
necessary because there would be no placebo effect to find. We tried to pick a topic that
wouldnt have any confidentiality or privacy concerns. But people could feel bad
about how many times they really go to applebees and not tell us the truth.
When we picked the question about Applebees we thought that it would be a
really interesting topic. We surveyed the entire stats class, and we made the question
clear so we wouldnt have any people confused. After taking the survey we notice that
the class average was about 2-3 trips to applebees every two weeks during the
summer.
