BIG Outline
Thesis- I will read multiple different articles about school dress code policies to analyze
how theyre trying to persuade me.
Authors and speakers use techniques of persuasiveness called pathos will appeal to
readers emotions, logos which are statistics and facts, and ethos that appeal to ethnicities, and
cultures. When analyzing persuasive context it is important to be aware of these techniques.
While searching for my sources I found more articles that are prodresscode than not. Although I was able to find some that leaned more towards
non pro-dresscode, or even really lenient dress code policies.
Subpoint 1- This article uses logos by stating that the principle in the school did a survey
and took data on three different types of dress days to see how the students would participate.
Ethos was used by accepting that locals standards were relative to the dress codes. This article
will help with my essay because it includes an actual study of how kids react to being told what
to wear. Another article that uses logos used it in the same way by comparing percentages of
different analyzations and surveys from students, and researchers. These articles relate to my
topic by bringing up issues I wouldn't of thought about dress codes on my own.

Subpoint 2- Multiple articles used pathos as a way of persuasion because school dress
code policies are such a touchy topic and hard to get just right. One article used pathos by

bringing up the issues of poor families that may not be able to afford certain uniforms. Another
article used pathos by stating that the school has gang, and violence issues. I took into
consideration that not just this one school has those issues, and as far as I know there are
probably hundreds of schools that have gang, and violence issues.
Subpoint 3- Even though all of the sources im using are pro-dresscode there are two that
do in-fact lean toward pro dresscode but they agree to be really lenient about the policy they
engage in. One sources thesis asks how schools can create reasonable, and appropriate
school dress code policies. Another source also leans more toward pro-dresscode but the author
tries to persuade the readers by being less strict on the dress codes rules. The writer uses ethos by
acknowledging that clothing styles changes frequently, and rules should be changed accordingly.
Subpoint 4- Only a couple sources used ethos but it is still an important way to persuade
one article used ethos by accepting that locals standards of clothing should relate to the dress
code policy being applied. Although I didnt point it out in my annotated bibliography another
article used ethos by accepting that the area the school was in was a more violent area that had
gangs.
