Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such

as the reports, photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be
attached to the assignment report in a proper order.
The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the
Second Examiners comments should be in GREEN ink.
The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in
the Component CET B: Assignment table.
If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the
second examiner lies within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first
examiner is considered to be final. If the variation is more than +/- 3 marks
then both the examiners should resolve the issue in consultation with the
Chairman BoE.

Assignment-1
Term - 1
Instructions to students:
1. The assignment consists of 2 questions: Part A 1 Question, Part B- 4
Questions.
2. Maximum marks is 50.
3. The assignment has to be neatly word processed as per the prescribed
format.
4. The maximum number of pages should be restricted to 20.
5. Restrict your report for Part-A to 3 pages only.
6. Restrict your report for Part-B to a maximum of 17 pages.
7. The printed assignment must be submitted to the subject leader.
8. Submission Date: 06/03/2017
9. Submission after the due date is not permitted.
10.IMPORTANT: It is essential that all the sources used in preparation of the
assignment must be suitably referenced in the text.

11.Marks will be awarded only to the sections and subsections clearly

indicated as per the problem statement/exercise/question
INTRODUCTION:
This assignment is aimed at preparing the students to apply engineering
principles and methods for the design and analysis of common machine
elements under various loading conditions used in machinery. Students will be
trained to design machine components using prescribed standards, correction
factors

and

codes

based

on

loading

conditions.

Design

of

mechanical

components like clutches, rope and chain drives and applications of curved
beams will be discussed.

Part - A
(10 marks)
A1. Power is transmitted from one place to other using drives. These drives are
generally classified as flexible and non-flexible drives. Rope drives and chain
drives are typical examples of flexible drives. Rope drives are used where power
is transmitted over a large distance while chains drives are generally used for
short distance power transmission. However there are some applications like
small lifting devices where one can use both chain or rope drives.
Based on this, following statement is made:
Rope drive and chain drive can never be used interchangeably
Debate on the above statement. The debate written should essentially include:
A1.1
A1.2
A1.3
A1.4

An introduction and statement of your stance

Discussion on rope and chain drive
A suitable example to support your stance
Concluding remarks with justification

Part B
(40 marks)

B-1: A clutch is used to transmit power from driving shaft to driven shaft. These
clutches are classified based on method of engagement like, positive contact
clutch, friction clutch, electromagnetic clutch, etc. In friction clutch, a friction
plate is used to transmit power from one shaft to another. The power transmitted
is proportional to the size of clutch plate (friction plate) and number of clutch
plates (multi-disk clutch). For a given power rating, the size of the single plate
clutch is relatively large, while multi-disk clutch gives a very compact size.
Select a power transmission unit where single plate clutch is used. Now assume
that there is a space constrains and you need to bring down the size of clutch
unit using multi-disk clutch assembly. Prepare a report for the newly designed
clutch assembly with following points:
Note: Contact course leader before finalising the application and power rating

B-2:

Introduction to the selected application

Component dimensional details of the existing clutch assembly
Design of new multi-disk clutch assembly
Summary of results with conclusion

Chain drive is used transmit power from one shaft to other shaft where

distance between two shaft is less. Assume that in the previous application (B1), a gear box is used for speed reduction from driver shaft to the end
application. Now, it is proposed that a chain drive is needed to be used in place
of gear box to reduce the cost and for better performance under shock loading
condition. Design a chain drive system and prepare a report containing following
points:
Note: Consult course leader for speed reduction ratio and center distance.
B2.1 Design specifications for the chain drive like power rating, speed of
driver shaft, speed reduction ratio, center distance, etc.
B2.2 Selection of proper roller chain and arrive at pitch circle diameter of
driving and driven sprocket, number of chain links
B2.3 Arrive at all critical dimensions of sprocket wheel like outer diameter,
root diameter, roller seating radius, tooth flank radius, tooth width, tooth
side relief, etc.
B2.4 Summary of results

B-3:

Wire ropes are used to transmit power over a large distance. Select an

application where wire ropes are used to transmit power and prepare a report.
The report should include the following:
Note: Contact course leader before finalising the wire rope application
B3.1 Details of the application selected
B3.2 Details of the construction of the wire rope like wire material, strand,
classification, designation, etc.
B3.3 Details of cross sectional dimensions, mechanical properties, factor of
safety applicable, size of wire rope sheaves and drums, fasteners, etc.
B3.4 Concluding remark
B-4: Principles of curved beam is used in various applications like crane hook,
chain links, frames of machines, etc. From an industrial application, select a
crane hook which is used to lift heavy materials. Design the crane hook based on
the application and prepare a report containing:
Note: Contact course leader before finalising the application and loading
capacity
B4.1 Details of the application including load carrying capacity
B4.2 Explain the design procedure followed
B4.3 Arrive at the design of crane hook with its cross-section, material
used, factor safety.
B4.4 Justify your design process
