FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMES

Dear Parishioners,
Our readings this week reminds us of the values by which we are
called to live out the Gospel of Jesus. Zephaniah invites us to seek
integrity and humility; St Paul tells us that God uses what is weak by human reckoning
those who are nothing at all to show up those who are everything.
All of this is presented by Matthew in recording, the Beatitudes the Sermon on the
Mount. (Some translations of the bible use the word Blessed as opposed to Happy. We are
blessed by God, whether happy or not)!
Matthew sets the scene: Jesus goes up the hill like Moses on the Mountain: Jesus sits
down a sign of a teacher giving instruction.
Jesus speaks with authority: As we listen to the Beatitudes, please keep in mind that over
the future Sundays, Matthew will be reminding us of further teachings and gracious word of
Jesus:
You are the salt of the earth ... you are the light of the world
You have learnt how it was said to your ancestors, but I say this to you
Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you
You cannot be a slave both of God and of money.
So in todays gospel, we see the central part of the teachings and ministry of Jesus. You
will note that the words of Jesus here in the Sermon on the Mount, turn worldly values upside
down.
Many would consider that power, riches, wealth, esteem, status, aggression, arrogance
etc. are the important things in life all help you to get on, nobody to stop you
In the political arena, we hear about building walls instead of bridges; torture is now
presented as acceptable are we heading back to the dark ages? There is serious thinking to
be done by way of combating evil; the matter of dialogue is central.
Yet, Jesus offers a way forward:
Blessed are those who know their need of God.
Blessed are those who are gentle and kind.
Blessed are those who have standards and values and are prepared to live up to them.
Blessed are those who are able to forgive others.
Blessed are the peacemakers; who spread understanding; who welcome the stranger;
who work for a just society.
Blessed are those who stand up for right; those who speak truth or power.
We need to listen afresh to those words of the Beatitudes and continue to unpack them.
Please see flyer on Science, Faith & Justice on Care for the Earth, Monday 6th Feb 7-9pm
at the UCLU Cruciform Building.
Thats all for now, God bless.
Fr Joe

CREATION QUOTES FROM LAUDATO SI
There has been a tragic rise in the number
of migrants seeking to flee from the growing
poverty caused by environmental
degradation. They are not recognized by
international conventions as refugees; they
bear the loss of the lives they have left
behind, without enjoying any legal
protection whatsoever. Sadly, there is
widespread indifference to such suffering,
which is even now taking place throughout
our world. (LS 25)
