STATEMENT: Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. Responds to National
Outrage Over “Muslim Ban”
Chapel Hill, NC -- Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. joins the national and global
outrage over the proposed "Muslim Ban" issued by President Donald Trump on Friday,
which effectively blocks citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen
from entering the country, suspends all refugee admissions for 120 days, blocks Syrian
refugee admissions indefinitely, and reduces the country's annual refugee admissions
target.
We stand by our Muslim sisters, their family and loved ones, and anyone who is
experiencing pain and anxiety in this very trying time. Individuals from these countries
come to the United States to seek refuge from war and conflict, and they are now being met
with xenophobia. As an organization that actively works to celebrate and uplift diversity, we
denounce this ban.
The fabric of the United States of America is rich with immigrants and refugees, and people
who come here seeking opportunity because of this country's democratic principles and
values. This should continue being a nation that keeps its doors open to vulnerable people,
without discriminating based on religion or national origin. We have too much to lose of
ourselves when we don't remain true.
We are supportive of the legal actions being taken by organizations like ACLU and NILC
that are working to stop this from continuing, and sisters of our organization are joining the
demonstrations and protests in support and hope that this decision is permanently shut
down swiftly. As a group of women who come together across different races, cultures,
religions, lifestyles, and backgrounds, let us continue to be living examples of caring
advocates for one another through this time.
