Fraser Wood Community News

Tuesday January 31st, 2017
Dear Fraser Wood Community,

We would like to thank you for your generous contributions this past December for the
Surrey Food Bank. Our Fraser Wood school community collected 640 pounds of food and
raised $602.60 wow! These contributions will help many Surrey families over the next few
months.
We have just finished our school-wide Jump Rope For Heart Campaign. All students
participated in healthy hearts, healthy minds learning, in the classroom and in the gym. We
were very fortunate to have the Abby Rope Works student club come and perform some
skipping tricks and routines for us last week thank you to Molly Shahi for helping us organize
this fabulous performance.

Reminder Please check your son/daughters FreshGrade portfolio as NO Summary of

Learning will be sent home for Term 2 all Communication of Student Learning for second term
is and will be shared in an ongoing manner via FreshGrade. If you would like support to log-on
please contact your childs teacher.
We look forward to seeing you on February 1st for Student-Led Conferences and FreshGrade
shares. Early Dismissal is on that day at 1:33pm.
Sincerely,
Krista Forbes

Student Leadership

Our Student Leadership Team is looking for your help. We would like to collect used batteries in
support of the campaign, Zinc Saves Lives. This campaign is a partnership between Teck (a
diversified resource company), UNICEF and Free the Children.
Each year, 450,000 children die due to complications associated with zinc deficiency. This
deficiency is typically the result of inadequate dietary intake of zinc. Foods that are rich in zinc
include meat, poultry, seafood and nuts. Zinc deficiency is particularly profound in the
developing world where most populations have plant-based diets that are low in zinc. Zinc
deficiency can lead to impaired growth and a weakened immune system that makes children
more susceptible to infection and disease.

One AA battery contains the same amount of zinc that can save the lives of six
children.
Please collect any used batteries around your house, save them up and bring them into the
school for Our Week of Zinc (Feb. 20 24, 2017). The student leadership team will have
a box set up in the front entrance of the school for collection and will also come to classrooms
to help with the collection. The more batteries we collect, the more lives we save!
Thank you for your support with our campaign.

Athletics Updates
Boys and Girls Basketball is well underway. Our Fraser Wood teams have been practicing since
early January and have played two successful games so far. They have showed excellent
sportsmanship! We are hosting play days for our district zone in late February please come
and cheer for our athletes! Thank you to Ms. Aitken, Ms. Pilton & Ms. Bryn-McLeod for coaching.
Stay tuned for Badminton starting this spring!

Library News
I wish to extend a big thank you to the Fraser Wood community for donating items to the
library. The students have already used some of the materials and had a great time creating
projects. Your generosity and thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Shawna Steunenberg (Teacher-Librarian)

Traffic & Safety

We appreciate your attention to the no left turn signage in the student drop-off bay. Now that
the snow is beginning to melt we are noticing that things are moving along much faster. Please
remember to drive all the way to the north end of the drop-off area and not to stop half-way
through the driveway. It is much safer for students to walk right to the sidewalk versus inbetween the cars.

Lunar New Year Parade & Festivities

On Monday, February 6th at 1:00pm we will be hosting our annual Lunar New Year Parade.
Students and families are asked to wear red and gold on that day. All families are welcome to
watch the parade from the gym. As we are increasing in student population, we are adjusting
our regular route to provide families more space (in the gym) to enjoy the show! We look
forward to seeing you there - Happy New Year!
