There are various different codes and conventions associated
with the Thriller genre and sub-genres. Thrillers often include many components such as:
Protagonist and Antagonist Often the Protagonist is
in power at the start of the thriller however this power tends to shift unto the protagonist over the course of the film
Low-key lighting/Colour Palette The use of low-key
lighting and dark colour palettes within thrillers helps to emphasise generate mystery and suspense in the audience
Desolate Area Lonely and desolate areas add to a
theme of isolation; this helps to emphasise the vulnerability of the characters.
Domination There is usually eventual domination of
the protagonist over the antagonist
Props Props such as guns, knives etc. tend to signify
violence and terror, and create fear within the audience.
Twists Constant twists in the plot create enigma in the
audience as they dont know what to expect.
Good vs Evil Reflects injustice and the battle between
good and evil
Moods and Atmospheres Created Fear, suspense,
enigma, terror, violence Costumes and Characters Characters often look distressed and are dressed in dark colours. The protagonist may dress in lighter colours as they are seen as the hero.
