In this short research I have talk about the Sociology as a Profession. Although every profession
has its on significance, sociology is one of them so far. Sociology is of great importance in the
solution of social problems and it also study role of the institutions in the development of the
individuals and so on. Moreover, it has been study that sociology is not only an intellectual
discipline, but a profession as well. When we speak of a profession, we refer mainly to such
things as the uses or applications of a body of knowledge. Last but not the least, sociology
required skills in its profession. Sociology is a many-sided discipline that involves social theory
and analysis of social movements on both a quantitative and qualitative level.

Proposition Number 1:
IMPORTANCE OF SOCIOLOGY:

Sociology makes a scientific study of society:

Prior to the emergence of sociology the study of society was carried on in an unscientific manner
and society had never been the central concern of any science. It is through the study of
sociology that the truly scientific study of the society has been possible. Sociology because of its
bearing upon many of the problems of the present world has assumed such a great importance
that it is considered to be the best approach to all the social sciences.

Sociology studies role of the institutions in the development of the individuals:

It is through sociology that scientific study of the great social institutions and the relation of the
individual to each is being made. The home and family ,the school and education, the church and
religion, the state and government ,industry and work ,the community and association, these are
institutions through which society functions. Sociology studies these institutions and their role in
the development of the individual and suggests suitable measures for increasing them with a
view to enable them to serve the individual better.

Study of sociology is indispensable for understanding and planning of society:

Society is a complex phenomenon with a multitude of ins and outs It is impossible to understand
and solve its numerous problems without support of sociology. It is rightly said that we cannot
understand and mend society without any knowledge of its means and construction. Without the
investigation carried out by sociology no real effective social planning would be possible. It
helps us to determine the most efficient means for reaching the goals agreed upon. A certain
amount of knowledge about society is necessary before any social policies can be carried out
Sociology is of great importance in the solution of social problems:
The present world is suffering from many problems which can be solved through scientific study
of the society. It is the task of sociology to study the social problems through the methods of
scientific research and to find out solution to them. The scientific study of human affairs will
ultimately provide the body of knowledge and principles that will enable us to control the
conditions of social life and improve them.

Sociology is of great importance in the solution of international problems:

The progress made by physical sciences has brought the nations of the world nearer to each
other. But in the social field the world has been left behind by the revolutionary progress of the
science. The world is divided politically giving rise to stress and conflict. Men have failed to
bring in peace. Sociology can help us in understanding the underlying causes and tensions.
Proposition Number 2:
Careers in Sociology:

Sociology is not only an intellectual discipline, it is also a profession. When we speak of a

profession, we refer mainly to such things as the uses or applications of a body of knowledge.

Sociologists play a rich and varied role in todays society.

They serve in a variety of capacities, such as consultant, teacher, policy maker, researcher,

administrator, clinical counselor, social critic, interviewer, journalist, probation and parole

worker, career counselor, social worker, recreation worker, programmer evaluator, urban planner,

marketing administration coordinator, personnel manager, etc. They work in areas as broad and

diverse as the discipline they have chosen.

Knowledge of sociology can be used in the following areas of social life:

1. Teaching

2. Social research

3. Social work

4. Professionsmedicine, law, engineering, business, etc.

Proposition Number 3:

Skills required in Sociology Profession:

Sociology is a multi-faceted discipline that involves social theory and analysis of social
movements on both a quantitative and qualitative level. In a profession of sociology, you should
likely read some ethnography of particular individuals that authors feel are descriptive of greater
social scheme, considered statistical tables of data, and studied theories of the ways in which
current power structures came into being.

The ability to understand the linkages between the two types of information, and analyze the
correlations between the statistical representation of sociological trends and the greater
theoretical frameworks supplied by the authors you should read is foundational to almost any
career. Sociologists sometimes come under fire for theorizing massive, sweeping claims about
society its the ability to back these claims up with collected data that makes for a good
sociologist and highlights the skills that are applicable in the job market. Strong analytical skills
are highly desirable by employers in any and all job markets at this point.
Analysis
After my research work on Sociology as a profession I came to know that sociology have
importance of its known. Every profession whether it is of doctor, teaching, researcher, lawyer,
artist, consultant etc good in its way barely ones interest should be there. Sociology is not an
intellectual discipline, but is also known as a profession too. Sociologists play a rich and
different role in todays society. A good sociologists, having great skills made this profession
more vast from few decades. They work for their attention and built something more effective so
that this profession would become more popular as doctor engineer profession are. Although
sociologists are in performance in todays society.

I would like to conclude that no one can either say that this profession is superior or dreadful
profession as all professions are linked to each other now a days. As I mention in my research
work that social problems can be resolve by sociologists as they study the social problems
through the method of scientific research. This seems that sociology as a profession is one of the
most upcoming profession in few years.
