Erection tolerances

S.No. Description Tolerance

1 Columns Verticality
Out of plumbness of column
axis from true vertical axis
Heights up to 30 m H/1000 or 25 mm whichever is less
Heights over 30 m H/1200 or 35 mm whichever is less

Columns Position The position in plan of a steel column at the

base shall not deviate from the specified
position by more than 10mm along either of
the principal setting out axes
2 Beam level Maximum deviation of level at each end of
the same beam: 5mm.
The level of the top of the steelwork at any
storey shall be within 10mm of the
specified level
3 Beam position Beams shall not deviate from their specified
positions relative to the column to which
they are connected by more than 5mm
4 Trusses:
Lateral shift in location of truss 10mm
from its true vertical position
5 Crane girders and ribs:
Shift in plane of alignment with 5mm
respect to true axis of crane rail.
6 Chimney and towers:
Out of plumbness (vertically 1/1000 of the height of the chimney or tower
from true vertical axis)
Pump Shaft Alignment

Alignment of the pump base shall be carried out as follows, unless otherwise specified:

(1) Tolerance shall be as in the following table:

Item Vertical Horizontal

Elevation 3.0
Position 3.0
Perpendicularity 0.1/100
Level 0.1/100

(2) Elevation of finished surface of base plate shall be measured on the basis of the level
marking on the foundation.

(3) Position of the pump Centre marked on the base frame, shall be measured on the
basis of the Centre marking of the foundation.

(4) For measuring of the perpendicularity or level, the finished surface of the base frame
shall be the basis.

Alignment of the shafts shall be carried out within the tolerance in the following table, unless
otherwise specified:

1) Tolerance for parallel deflection of shafts

Shaft Speed (rpm) Tolerance (mm)

less than 1 000 0.1
1 000 to 5 000 0.05
over 5 000 0.03

2) Tolerance for angular deflection of shafts shall be in accordance with the coupling
manufacturers specification. Tolerance 0.07 mm shall be applied when there is no
requirement in manufacturers specification.
3) Method of the alignment is as follows:

a) Fix two dial indicators on the shaft 2, so that one of their tips comes in contact with
the circumference of shaft 1, another with the face of shaft 1. The two contact points
on shaft 1 shall be as near as possible to each other
b) Turn shaft 2 fully once, and check fluctuation in the tip contact.
c) Set the scales of two-dial indicator to zero at the top point of shaft 1.
d) Turn shaft 2 slowly through 3600, and read indications of the two dial indicators at
every 900 .
e) Turn shaft 1 by 1800 .Repeat the procedure as described in Par. (d).
f) Result of the alignment shall) be the average of the two measurements of Par. (d)
and (e).
Distance between the couplings shall be confirmed to meet the dimension specified
in the drawings, after the shafts are set to the base line.
