3. The Legend Is Born Ip Man

When Ip Man was thirteen years old he started learning Wing Chun from Chan Wah-shun.
Because of his sifu's old age, Ip Man had to learn much of his skills and techniques from his
master's second eldest disciple Ng Chung-sok. Three years into Ip Man's training Chan Wah-shun
died. One of his dying wishes was to have Ng continue training Ip.

At the age of 15 Ip man moved to Hong Kong with help from Leung Fut Ting, a relative. At
age sixteen, Ip Man attended school at St. Stephen's College in Hong Kong. It was a secondary
school for wealthy families and foreigners who lived in Hong Kong. According to Ip Man's two sons
(Ip Ching and Ip Chun), while at St. Stephen's Ip Man intervened after seeing a foreign police
officer beating a woman. The story goes that the police officer tried to strike Ip Man who used his
martial arts to strike the officer down, at which point Ip Man and his classmate ran to school. The
classmate is said to have told an older man who lived in the same apartment block. Ip Man was
invited to see this man and the man asked Ip Man what martial art he studied. Ip told him, but said
he would not understand. The man then asked Ip Man to show him his first 2 forms (Sil Lim Tao
and Chun Kiu). The man then told Ip Man that his forms were "not too great." Ip Man was then
invited to Chi Sau (a form of training that involves controlled attack and defence). Ip Man saw this
as an opportunity to prove his Kung Fu was good, but he was beaten after just a few strikes. It
turned out that the old man was his master's elder fellow-disciple (and so, by Chinese tradition Ip
Man's martial uncle or Sibak), Leung Bik , son of his master's master Leung Jan. After that
ncounter, Ip Man continued his training lessons from Leung Bik. Ip Man recounts the story himself
in an interview with Martial Hero Magazine, although in his own account he does not mention a
fight with a police officer and claims it was because he was always causing trouble at school that
his friends spoke to Leung Bik about him. By the age of 24, Ip Man had returned to Foshan, his
Wing Chun skills tremendously improved.

In 1967, Ip Man and some of his students established the Hong Kong Ving Tsun Athletic
Association. In 1972, Ip Man suffered cancer and subsequently died on the 2nd of December that
same year. About 6 weeks before he died he asked his 2 sons and his student Lau Hon Lam to film
him performing the Wing Chun system as practice by him. He only managed Sil Lim Tau, Chum
Kiu and the Dummy form. This is because he was in a lot of pain and was weak and unsteady on
his feet. He was going to do Biu Gee, the Knife form and long pole. However Grandmaster Ip Chun
and Ip Ching and Sifu Lau Hong Lam stopped Ip Man because Biu Gee, the knives and full pole
form require a lot of energy to perform. Ip Man had many students and worried some of them were
adapting the system due to their own incomplete knowledge and felt that filming it was the only
way to stop the frauds and cheats.

graduating in 1960, he remained in West Germany as an aeronautics researcher and production
supervisor.

Habibie believed his enterprises ultimately would spawn high-tech ventures in the private
sector and allow the country to climb the technology ladder. In 1993 he unveiled the first
Indonesian-developed plane, which he helped design, and in the following year he launched a plan
to refurbish more than three dozen vessels bought from the former East German navy at his
initiative. The Finance Ministry balked at the cost of the latter endeavour, while the armed forces
thought that its turf had been violated. Nevertheless, Habibie got more than $400 million for
refurbishing.
Meanwhile, in 1990 Habibie was appointed head of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals
Association, and during the 1993 central-board elections of the countrys ruling party, Golkar,
Habibie helped the children and allies of President Suharto rise to top positions, easing out long-

into the countrys top position, Habibie immediately began to implement major reforms. He

laws; allowed a free press; arranged for free parliamentary and presidential elections the following

2. The rapper has received fifteen Grammy Awards, has been praised for his "verbal energy"
and lyrical quality and was ranked ninth on MTV's Greatest MCs of All Time list. [296][297]In
2003, he was thirteenth on MTV's 22 Greatest Voices in Music list [298] and 82nd on Rolling
Stone's Immortals list.
3. In 2008 Vibe Magazine readers named Eminem the Best Rapper Alive
4. "The Real Slim Shady" (from his second Grammy-winning album, The Marshall Mathers
LP) criticizes the awards in its second verse, with Eminem believing at the time that
negative opinion of his material would prevent him from ever winning one.
5. The rapper received the Global Icon Award at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards in
Amsterdam.

Eminem was born on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the only child of Marshall
Bruce Mathers, Jr. (born June 30, 1951; known as Bruce) and Deborah Rae "Debbie" Nelson (born
January 6, 1955). Debbie was 14 when she met 18-year-old Bruce; at age 17, she nearly died
during her 73-hour labor. Eminem's parents were in a band called Daddy Warbucks, playing
in Ramada Inns along the DakotasMontana border before their separation.

Eminem's home life was seldom stable; he frequently fought with his mother, whom a social
worker described as having a "very suspicious, almost paranoid personality". When her son
became famous, Debbie was unimpressed by suggestions that she was a less-than-ideal mother,
contending that she sheltered him and was responsible for his success. In 1987, Debbie allowed
runaway Kimberly Ann "Kim" Scott to stay at their home; several years later, Eminem began an on-
and-off relationship with Scott. After spending three years in ninth grade due to truancy and poor
grades, he dropped out of Lincoln High School at age 17. Although he was interested in English,
he never explored literature (preferring comic books) and disliked math and social studies. Eminem
worked at several jobs to help his mother pay the bills, later maintaining that she often threw him
out of the house anyway. When she left to play bingo, he would blast the stereo and write songs.

At age 14, Eminem began rapping with high-school friend Mike Ruby; they adopted the
names "Manix" and "M&M", the latter of which evolved into "Eminem". Eminem sneaked into
neighboring Osborn High School with friend and fellow rapper Proof for lunchroom freestyle rap
battles. On Saturdays, they attended open mic contests at the Hip-Hop Shop on West 7 Mile,
considered "ground zero" for the Detroit rap scene. Struggling to succeed in a predominantly black
industry, Eminem was appreciated by underground hip hop audiences. When he wrote verses, he
wanted most of the words to rhyme; he wrote long words or phrases on paper and, underneath,
worked on rhymes for each syllable. Although the words often made little sense, the drill helped
Eminem practice sounds and rhymes.

materialized, but it prompted Slash to take up an instrument. Since Adler had designated himself
the role of guitarist, Slash decided to learn how to play bass. Equipped with a one-string flamenco
guitar given to him by his grandmother, he began taking classes with Robert Wolin, a teacher at
Fairfax Music School. During his first lesson, Slash decided to switch from bass to guitar after
hearing Wolin play "Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones. His decision to play guitar was further
influenced by one of his school teachers, who would play songs by Cream and Led Zeppelin for his
students. As a result, Slash stated, "When I heard him do that, I said, 'That's what I want to do." A
champion BMX rider, Slash put the bike aside to devote himself to playing guitar, practicing up to
12 hours a day.
