History
France is one of the oldest states in Europe, although France only appears with such name
from the Middle Ages in a difficult precise date irrefutably. fully Gaul is recognized as a historical
antecedent of France, although the Galia occupied a slightly more extensive than present
France European surface.
In the European hegemonic wars France imposed tried it several times and at different times
had to face almost all Europe (separately or together as a counterbalance to French
expansionism). So it was with Charlemagne (Charles I, "The Great") in the ninth century, Louis
XIV ( "The Sun King") in the seventeenth century, and Napoleon Bonaparte (Napoleon's "The
Great") in the nineteenth century.

Prehistory:
There are significant remains of Lower Palaeolithic in the Somme River and traditional Pyrenees
(Neanderthals) as well as in La Chapelle-aux-Saints, Le Moustier and La Ferrasie. Upper
Paleolithic there are abundant traces of the Cro-Magnon, Grimaldi and Chancelade, dated at
about 25,000 years old, which are located in the Dordogne Valley. [1] Among the most famous
paintings in the world are those of Lascaux and Font de Gaume, in the French Pyrenees.
In the Mesolithic some agricultural activities were replaced in importance to the caves, and the
Neolithic (from the third millennium BC) the megalithic culture (that used menhirs, dolmens and
burial grounds) emerged. Since around 1500 B.C. Bronze Age begins, developing trade routes.
It found Acheulean tools of homo erectus industry 900 or 1000 years ago in the cave Le
Vallonnet, in southern France. Iron Age and Celtic cultures are within the first millennium B.C.
Old age:
What is now France, it was formerly known as Gaul. Gaul was populated by Gauls, Celtic
people of Indo-European origin. Its borders were partially stabilized by the north with the current
Channel, to the west by the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean), south to the Pyrenees mountains
and the Mediterranean Sea, and on the east by the Rhine River ( that separated him from the
Germania) and the Alps mountains (which separated him from Italy). The Gauls Celtic
civilizations staged La Tene and Vix. In southern Gaul Greeks (Ionians), who founded Massalia
(Marseilles), Agde, among others (s. VIII VI B.C.) were established.
Gaius Julius Caesar defeated Gallic chief Vercingetorix in 51 B.C., creating a mattress between
Rome and the Germanic peoples, with their migrations harassed Rome periodically. Then there
was a genocide that decreased considerably to the gala population. This facilitated the rapid
Latinization, but also the work that began not long after making the first Christian missionaries
who progressed expanding within the borders of the Roman Empire. Thus, most of Celtic Gaul
soon became Latin and Christian. Lugdunum (Lyon) became an important Christian religious
center. The increasingly enriched, Latin and Christian Galia reached important cultural levels
that survived even the barbarian invasions. Times after the barbarian invasions the Germans
became Latin and was the necessity to declare war to the Germans.
