-menaretherefoundtohavecarriedthemselveswhilstthey

wereonearth,theyarepresentlyadjudgedtotheireternal

habitations.

Ifitbetherefoundupontrial,thattheyhave

performedtheirdutybothtoGodandman,astheyought

todo,then,inandthroughthemeritsofJesusChrist,they

have allhappinessandhonourimaginableconferredupon

them.

But iftheybetherefoundtohavemisspenttheir

time, embezzled their talents, andneglected their duty

eithertotheirgreatCreator,ortheirfellow-creatures,whilst

arecondemnedtoeternalmiseryandtorment.

Nowitwillnot,itcannotbelong,beforeyouandImust

allstandbeforethistribunal,andtheregiveupouraccounts

beforethegreatandall-wiseJudgeofHeavenandEarth.

But,blessedbeHisgloriousNamefor it, thereisnoneof

usbutasyetmaysoprepareourselvesforit,astocomeoff

withjoyandcomfortatthatday. ForHethatthenwillbe

ourJudge,asyetprofferstobeourAdvocate,yea,andour

Saviourtoo : andHehathmadethatprovisionforus,and

ationatthattime,that it is nothingbutourownfollyand

madnessthatcanmakeussubjecttoit. ForHehavingin

thatdeathwhichwasduetous,haththerebyputusintoa ournaturesundergonethecurseoftheLaw,andsuffered

capacityofavoidingit; whichwemayalldo,ifwewillbut

performtheconditionswhichHerequiresinHisGospel,in

orderto it ; whichareonlytorepentofourformersins,

andsincerelyendeavouruntotheutmostofourpower,for

alwayskeepourselves withintheboundsofequityand

justice,Hehathgivenushereinthewordsofmytexta

shortandcomprehensiverule,easytobekeptalwaysinour

minds,wherebytoorder all ouractionstowardsonean wherebyHewillexamineandweighthemallatthedayof

other,saying, " Thereforeall thingswhatsoeveryewould

thatmenshoulddotoyou,doyeevensotothem : forthis

istheLawandtheProphets."

Whichwordswemustnotlookupononlyascontaining

goodadvice,andwholesomecounselanddirectionforthe

orderingofour lives and conversations,butwe are to

esteemthemtobewhatreallytheyare,evenanexpress

commandwhichChristenjoinsallHisdisciplespunctually toobserve,asthestandardofallourcivilactions ; andthat

judgment. Sothatallouractionstooneanothershallbe

eitherapprovedof.orcondemned,accordingastheyare,or

arenotconformabletothisrule.

comprisedunderourlovingHimaboveallthings,sowhat

soeveritisthatweareboundtoperformuntoourneigh

bourisbrieflycomprehendedinourlovinghimasourselves ;

which itisimpossibleforustoexpressinanyotherways

thanbydoinguntootherswhatsoeverwewouldthatthey

Butnowthisdothnotfollowatall; foralthough,ifyouwas

inhisconditionandheinyours,youmightprobablydesire

asmuchofhimashedesiresofyou,yetyourdesirestohim

wouldbeunreasonable,andsoarehistoyou : forwesup

posehehathnoabsolutenecessityofsomuchmoney,and

thereforehecannotsoproperlybesaidtowill,astocovet

it,hisdesireofsomuchproceedingfromhiscorruptinclina

tiontothethingsofthisworld. Butsupposingamantobe

insuchcircumstancesthatheiscertaintostarve,without

yoursupplyinghimwith so much ashehathabsolute

inyours,youmightjustlyaridreasonablywillthatheshould necessityof;heretheruleholdsgood,sothatyouarebound

tosupplyhimwithit,forifyouwasinhisconditionandhe

supplyyou; andbyconsequence,youareobligedtosupply
