GENERAL The fittings shown in this chapter are used as attachment elements of the string of
tower insulators. They are divided into two groups based on their function:
Elements with levels of freedom: Shackles, U-bolts and eye-bolts
Elements with 2 levels of freedom (horizontal and vertical): Hinges, fixation cases
and swivels.
One of the advantages of this second group is the bolt-hole coupling which ensures
a greater contact section between the parts and allows the passage of more
intensity through the unit. This feature is specially important when the Icc that the
string must support is high.
The fittings can be manufactured in stainless steel, adequate for highly corrosive
environments, and in high-resilience alloyed steel, adequate for structures exposed
to extremely low temperatures.
The fittings can be supplied upon request with different types of fasteners (stainless, corona free or special fasteners (Ex.
DIN 48073)).

GENERAL This chapter contains several solutions to protect the insulator string from an
electrical standpoint. There are three types of protections:
Protection elements from electric arc: Their purpose is to keep the electric arc at a
distance from the insulators in order to prevent deterioration. The arcing horns are
included in this group.
Elements of distribution of the electric field: Their purpose is to distribute the
electric field uniformly along the string in order to avoid corona effect. The rings
are included in this group.
Elements that merge both functions: Racquets and rings with sacrificial elements.
Despite the voltage not being the only factor influencing the occurrence of the
corona effect, we can affirm that:
The lines with <161 kV don't usually cause corona problems and the use of
racquets or rings is optional.
It may be necessary for lines with >161kV the installation of electric field
distribution elements.
The arcing horns, rings and racquets are designed to endure a 150kg load in their
extremes.

GENERAL The suspension and tension clamps serve to support and fasten the conductor to the
insulator string hardware.
Their peculiarity is that their size and design is selected according to the characteristics of
the conductor, so they are conductor fittings and not string fittings.
A correct clamp design must take into account the following aspects:
All the aluminium cast parts are manufactured from primary alloyed aluminium. This
creates optimal mechanic characteristics and prevents the corrosion of the parts (very low
iron content).
The installation of the clamps must be performed following the indications for each of the references.
The clamps can be supplied upon request with different types of fasteners (stainless, corona free or special fasteners).
SUSPENSION CLAMPS
GENERAL
The suspension clamps serve to support the conductor and attach it to the insulator string. They can be mounted on
the conductor with or without armour rods, depending on the requirements of the line.
Industrias Arruti has an extensive range of suspension clamps in their catalogue, the design is meant to: minimize
magnetic losses as much as possible, and the majority of them are a-magnetic clamps (zero magnetic losses), prevent
corona effect and minimize the effect of oscillations and vibrations. All clamps are designed so they can be installed
with counterweights.

TENSION CLAMPS AND JOINTS
GENERAL
The tension clamps are used to fasten the conductor and attach it to the insulator string in the end towers, so they
must resist a 90% - 95% of the breaking load of the conductor depending on the type of clamp. Their design is meant
to prevent the corona-effect, to minimize the effects of oscillations and vibration and to limit the compression efforts
on the conductor to acceptable levels.
There are 2 major groups: detachable bolted strain clamps and non-detachable compression dead-ends.
Compression dead-ends:
These clamps consist on a tubular body that compresses over the external layer of the conductor, a blade welded to
the body, a jumper connector fastened to the blade that ensures electrical continuity and a steel plunger that attaches
the clamp to the string.
The type of conductor to install must be taken into account for the correct design of a compression dead-end. There
are 4 major groups of conventional conductors. AAC, ACSR, AAAC and ACAR.
The tubular clamps for all aluminium conductors (AAC) and for aluminium conductors steel reinforced (ACSR) are
manufactured from pure aluminium. In the case of the ACSR clamps, the steel steel plunger has a double purpose:
attaching the clamp to the tower and supporting the mechanical load of the steel core of the conductor. This implies
that the internal plunger must be ductile enough as to not damage the steel core in the compression and resistant
enough as to support most of the load of the conductor.
The clamps for all alloy aluminium conductors (AAAC and ACAR) are manufactured in an alloy aluminium that
provides a good balance between electrical and mechanical properties.
The conductor continuity (tower passage) is performed with a 30 jumper connector, the connection from the jumper
connector to the clamp is performed with a bolted strain clamp (Nema 2 or Nema 4). The blades of the jumper
connector and the blade are milled and protected so the electrical contact is as efficient as possible.
When installing it is not required to use deoxidizing or filling products: when performing a continuous compression,
the aluminium oxide of the wires and the interior of the tube is broken, providing a perfect electrical contact.
However, an appropriate contact oil can be provided upon request.

GENERAL The connectors are connection elements that allow to maintain
electrical continuity between two conductors. They must be designed
to keep the electrical resistance of the connection stable and the
temperature of the connector between the temperature of the
conductor.

GENERAL The purpose of the earth wire is to protect the line from electric discharges caused by
lightning. It must be installed in the highest point of the tower and must remain at all times
above the conductors.
There are multiple cables that can be used for this purpose:
Galvanised steel cables
Alumoweld cables
ACSR cables
OPGW cables
The OPGW lodges tubes with several fibre optics creating a high capacity data network
parallel to the energy transmission network.
There are two other fibre optic wires that do not as as line protections but use similar fittings
and clamps that those used for OPGW. They are OPPC and ADDS. The OPPC is a
conductor with fibre tube and the ADDS acts exclusively as data transmitter.
All fibre optic cables are particularly sensible to curvature and compression forces. The
armoured grip suspension and the preformed dead ends are the best solution to prevent this
problem in suspensions and dead ends respectively.
This chapter shows all the solutions proposed by Industrias Arruti for earth and
communication wires.
Clarification:
The OPPC clamps are not included in the catalogue, consult with factory.
The ACSR clamps are presented in chapter 5.
It is possible that certain configurations require string fittings available on chapter 2 or tower
attachments available on chapter 1.
The warning spheres usually installed on the earth wires are presented in chapter 8.
The dampers for earth wires are presented in chapter 8.

ACCESSORIES FOR OTHER TYPES OF FIBRE CONDUCTORS
Different types of fittings can be manufactured upon request, as well as different configurations
according to the requirements of the client.
22
In this chapter we show four major product families:
GENERAL
Dampers.
Spacers.
Counterweights.
Bird protection and signalling elements.
Dampers
The wind vibrations are high-frequency and low amplitude oscillations caused by
medium-strength wind.
Is the main cause of deterioration of the conductor in the areas close to the
fastening points (spacers, clamps, warning spheres) and could cause damages to
adjacent clamps or elements. The deterioration can include broken threads or even
the complete break down of the conductor. The damages are usually caused by
fatigue.
The stockbridge damper is the best and cheapest technical option to control the
vibration in the conductors. The stockbridge consists of 4 elements, a tension
clamp to the conductor, a threaded galvanised steel cable and two different weight
masses that mitigate the vibration of the conductor when excited.
All our spacers fulfil the requirements set by international regulation IEC 61897.
Spacers
The purpose of the spacer is to maintain a specific geometry and distance between
the conductors of a same bundle in operating conditions without deteriorating the
clamping areas of the conductor. There are several types of spacers:
- Rigid spacer: Does not include articulated elements nor any energy absorption
element.
- Semi-rigid spacer: Does not include articulated elements but the clamps of the
spacer have elastomeric pieces which absorb an amount of movement between
the conductors.
- Flexible or articulated separator: Includes articulated elements
- Spacer damper: Includes articulated elements with elastomeric pieces that can
attenuate by deformation the vibration of the conductors.
All our spacers fulfil the requirements set by international regulation IEC 61854.
The selection of the spacer must obey to several factors:
Number of conductors and their characteristics.
Functionality
Presence of wind vibrations and oscillations subvano
Client specifications
Counterweights
The counterweights are used to limit the maximum displacement angles of the
strings and to apply tension in the suspension strings when the vertical tension
applied to the string is not enough. They can be mounted on the suspension
clamps or on the conductor itself.
Bird protection and signalling elements
This group includes several signalling elements like bird spiral warning spheres,
daylight warning spheres or luminous warning spheres.

FITTINGS AND ACCESSORIES FOR HIGH CAPACITY
CONDUCTORS
GENERAL
The high capacity conductors are conductors designed to work continuously at temperatures over 100
C and able to operate at temperatures over 200 C in emergency situations.
There are multiple technologies with very different functional characteristics and costs. Industrias Arruti
S.A. can provide fittings and accessories for the following technologies:
The temperature of the conductor affects the elements that are touching it: compression dead-ends,
suspension clamps, spacers, dampers and warning spheres. These elements must be designed or
prepared to work safely at the operating temperature of the conductor.
The main purpose of the design of the accessories and fittings for these types of conductors is to keep
the temperature under 90C in all the components while the conductor is working at 150C. Keeping
them below that temperature prevents the premature ageing of the aluminium.
The compression dead-ends have been designed to create a lower impedance, have a greater heat
dissipation area and are manufactured from pure aluminium free of chemical components that might
cause intergranular corrosion.
The suspension clamps, dampers, spacers and warning spheres must be installed on rods. The rods
increase the section of the conductor, which causes a decrease of the temperature in that area. As an
alternative to the rods, the elements with neoprene inserts in touch with the conductor can be provided
with special neoprene (FKM) adequate for working temperatures of up to 200C.

Photo sequence: Simulation and monitoring of T along the fitting string with conventional suspension clamp without rods. From its
reading it is deduced the necessity of rods in order to decrease temperature in the clamp, as well as a greater surface clamp.
TESTS
In order to validate all our designs, the tests contained in regulation IEC 61284 have been
complemented with two new tests:
Traction test at high temperature of the compression dead-end
Similar test to the one described on section 11.5.1 of the IEC 61284, but with the conductor at 150C.
The test consists of heating the conductor to 150C and keep it at that temperature with a tension
equal to the 20% of its C.R.N. for 1 hour. After this time, the load is gradually increase up to a 95% of
the C.R.N. of the conductor and is maintained for a minute, afterwards the load is increased until
breakdown.
The test is considered satisfactory if it resists for more than 1 minute at a 95% of its C.R.N.
Circuit assembly
Time
The compression dead-ends for high capacity cables are manufactured upon request
after a study of the characteristics of the conductor. Mechanical, electrical and installation
requirements are taken into account for its design. Everything stated on chapter 5 about
compression dead-ends for standard conductors is applicable to these clamps. The
differences between both types are caused by the following factors:
The requirement regarding high operating temperatures is a common characteristic for all
these cables. The purpose is to keep the temperature in all the points of the clamp below
90C with operating temperatures of 150C in the conductor. Particular attention must be
paid o the design of the interfaces and to the general greater size of the clamp compared
to a standard clamp.
It is vital to identify the critical interfaces (blade-tube welding, screwed connection blade-
jumper connector) and monitor their behaviour in operating conditions in order to verify
that the temperature values remain below the limit.
It should be expected that the clamps are occasionally at higher temperatures than 90C,
so the aluminium must have a chemical component free composition that could cause
intergranular corrosion.
Monitoring of temperature in different points Monitoring of temperature in different points Finite elements heating simulation
of the clamp for ACSS Linnet conductor of the clamp for ACSS Brant conductor for ACSS HEN
Materials of the conductor
The strength and mechanical resistance of the threads may affect the design of the
clamp. They must be fundamentally taken into account in the design of the plunger.
Certain conductors have different installation methods that require special adaptations
and considerations.
3
SUSPENSION CLAMPS
The suspension clamps used for this type of conductors are the same that the ones presented
in chapter 5. The clamps must always be installed on rods. The use of rods considerably
decreases the temperature of the clamp, keeping it below 90C.
The use of the following clamps is suggested:
GS-XX-AE with rods:
GST-XX with rods
GAS-X with double rod
The selection of the rod is determined by the requirements of the client and the possible wind
vibrations affecting the line.
As an alternative for the double rods in the GAS clamps, GAS type clamps with special
neoprene (FKM) adequate for working at 200C can be acquired.
Armoured Grip Suspension clamp GAS Temperature monitoring to a GS-6- Free centre suspension clamp with
with double armour rods AE clamp with rods armour rods
ACCESSORIES Accessories
Other accessories like dampers or warning spheres can be installed on the conductor as long
as armour rods capable of dissipating the heat and limiting the temperature in the contact
points are used.
4
The knowledge acquired during the long trajectory of Industrias Arruti and the collaboration
GENERAL with some of our most important clients has permitted the development of a new range of
installation tools.
The installation tools contained in this chapter are divided into three groups:
Stringing blocks.
Underground rollers.
Service pulleys.
Stringing blocks
The stringing block is used to support the conductor and make their displacement through
the suspension towers easier. There are stringing blocks for a single conductor and for
multiple conductors.
The block consists of a hot dip galvanised steel frame and one or more aluminium alloy
sheaves. The design and the materials used provide the unit with great resistance and
durability.
The blocks with smaller diameters can be acquired with naked groove or covered by
neoprene. The blocks with bigger diameters (650 mm and 900 mm) can be acquired with no
cover, nylon cover or neoprene cover; the nylon and neoprene covers can be disassembled.
All sheaves can be acquired with or without lubricator.
The central sheaves of the units are mounted on oblique contact two-row ball bearings that
provide a better bending operation than traditional bearings.
For the cases in which the pulley groove is covered by nylon or neoprene, there are ground
connections available for single, triple and quadruple pulleys.
In order to make the transportation and stacking of pulleys easier, there are transportation
and storage frames that can be adapted to all our models.
All pulleys have CE marking and have been designed according to regulation 2006/42/CE
regarding the machines.
All steel elements have been treated with anti-corrosion protection via hot dip galvanising
according to regulation ISO 1461.
Underground rollers
The underground rollers are used for the laying of underground cables.
The rollers consist of a steel structure and one or several aluminium alloy rollers. There are
two models, one for straight sections and another for the corners.
All steel elements have been treated with anti-corrosion protection via electrolytic zinc-
coating according to regulation ISO 2081.
Service pulleys
The service pulleys are tools used for the load suspension operations, bracing, tensioning of
string lines and re-sending in all the stages of line and sub-station assembly.
All steel elements have been treated with anti-corrosion protection via electrolytic zinc-
coating according to regulation ISO 2081.
