Data are collected using the Admissions and Discharge/Release questionnaires (See Appendix 1).Chapter 1: Prison Population 1.3 Prison Population The total prison population refers to the Zimbabwe Prison Service unlock figures. Whereas the statistics in the remainder of this publication refer to the 1st quarter of 2012 ending 31 March. the total prison population refers to unlock figures taken on the last Monday of the quarter. Matabeleland South and Masvingo have the lowest number of prisons. followed by Harare with five. This report presents results for the 1st Quarter of 2012. 1. 26 March 2012. Midlands Province has the highest number of prisons of eight. which refer to the total number of prisoners during the unlocking of prison doors or the total number of prisoners who would have slept in prison on the night of the previous day.2 Distribution of Prisons The list of all prisons according to four ZPS regions and ten provinces used by ZIMSTAT is shown in Appendix 2. The total prison population in the 1st Quarter of 2012 was 16 311.1 Introduction The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) through the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) collects information on prisons admissions and discharges on a monthly basis. that is. 1 . with three each. while Mashonaland Central. an increase of slightly more 12 percent when compared to 14 516 inmates in the 4th Quarter of 2011. 1. The information is used to measure and assess changes in crime trends and prison population characteristics.

The total number of prison admissions in the 1st Quarter of 2012 increased by 29 percent when compared to the 4th Quarter of 2011 while the number of new female prisoners increased by 26 percent in the period under review. Chapter 2: Admissions and Discharges 2. illustrated in Figure 1. were imprisoned during the 1st Quarter of 2012. 2. 1st Quarter 2012 2 .1 Introduction This chapter focuses on prison admissions and discharges by reason of discharge and sex. shows that a total of 8 043 persons. Population characteristics are recorded on admission of prisoners into prison.2 Admissions Table 1.

Figure 2: Distribution of Prison Discharges by Reason and Sex. 3 935prisoners were discharged or released from prison for various reasons during the 1st Quarter of 2012. 2. 83 had served their sentence terms and 54 were released to perform community service. Chikurubi Female Prison. most of the prisoners were released on expiry of their sentences (1 096) followed by payment of bail or free bail (1 067). Fifty-four prisoners escaped from custody while eight prisoners died in prison during the 1st Quarter of 2012. Of the 411 prisoners released. 135 were released on bail. The female only Prison. In the 1st Quarter of 2012. recorded the largest number of admissions of female prisoners of 175 during the 1st Quarter of 2012. For male prisoners who are Christians. Their female counterparts had other theft and common assault as the most frequent crimes. Age group and Sex Table 13 presents the distribution of prisoners by religion. For almost all religions. Age Group and Sex The distribution of prisoners by level of education is presented in Table 16. 7. 62 percent had forms 3 to 4 education.4 Crime Counts and Type. The highest number of male prisoners who were in the agricultural sector at the time of imprisonment was of a broad age group 20 to 29 years while those who were in business and finance was of a broad age group 20 to 44 years. the pattern was similar to that of prisoners who were unemployed. 59 percent of the male prisoners were unemployed.
