I. INTRODUCTION
a. Background
The development and activities along coastal areas (such as harbor extension and developments, port
channel dredging, reclamation, construction of coastal protection, etc) will impact the natural stability of
the shoreline. The effect of the development varies in each coasts, depend on the wind and wave
climate, tidal range, sediment materials, geographical location as well as geological condition. A proper
planning is essential to ensure the development of coastal areas have small influence to the surrounding
area, nevertheless improve the environment of coastal areas.
The development of coastal areas for waterfront cities has been growing rapidly in Indonesia. PT Karya
Unggulan Gemilang (KUG - LIPPO Group) planned to develop coastal areas in Ambon Gulf. The
development including coastal reclamation / beach nourishment and construction of coastal protection
structures in the boundary of reclamation land. KUG has started construction of Phase 1 (1.2 Ha)
reclamation as part of a larger reclamation project (total 64 Ha) at Ambon Bay. This is the proposal by
PT ITS Kemitraan (ITSK) to review a design of coastal structures (bundwall) initially developed by PT
KUG
b. Purpose of Study
As stated in te Term of Reference, the purpose of the study is to analysis of structural design on
reclamation of 1.2 Ha in the bay Ambon Reclamation project to minimize the reclamation construction
cost and to ensure that the coastal works is reasonable to construct
c. Area of Study
The study cover the area in the vicinity of Waai Ruhu river or Merah Putih Bridge as shown in the figure
below. Detailed location will be provided by LIPPO Group (the project owner).

d. Scope of Works
The owner (KUG) seek the professional engineering services of ITSK for the following works:

Review Design Proposal Bay of Ambon Reclamation Project Part A 1

1. Engineering analysis assessment for the engineering soundness, functionability, serviceability,
slope stability, robustness, etc of the temporary bundwall design under existing Ambon Bay site
conditions;
2. Advice the adverse implications of the temporary bund wall (e.g. can withstand what extent of
wave impacts, etc); and
3. Any other critical comments relating to the temporary bundwall design & its usage for the 1.2
Ha Reclamation for Hospital;
e. Methodologies
The study started by collecting of secondary /previous study data if available, including bathymetric data
obtained from Bakosurtanal / DISHIDROS map, recorded wind data and current / wave prediction from
the Agency of Meteorology and Climatology (BMKG), map of soil and sediment geology released by
Geotechnical laboratory / PPGL, hydro-oceanography data including tide, wave, current and
sedimentation from nearby river mouth if any.
Those data will be used in Structural design analysis as stated in the sope of works above including
Analysis of soil mechanics & hydrodynamics (wave, tide & settlement) and Analysis of structure stability
& slope stability by considering Soil Condition, Bathymetric condition, Coastal Protection Structure and
Environmental Aspect.

Previous Design Review

In this stage the previous Reclamation Design or studies (if available) will be reviewed which includes
Review of Soil Condition, Reclamation Level Design, and Slope Stability, continuing with Coastal
Protection Review which includes Type of structures, Armor Unit and Structure Stability.

Design Optimization
In Design Optimization, we will redesign the coastal protection structure if the analysis shows the
previously design of coastal protecting structures (bundwall) is inadequate. The redesign is based on
the current Soil Condition and data, redesign Reclamation Level Design, and Slope Stability analysis.
Coastal Protections Structure will also be redesign includes the selection of Armour units and
Structure Stability.
In the design review and proposed design the following aspect will also be considered:
A. Soil Condition. The condition of existing soil affects the reclamation project. The thickness of
soft clay (soil) will give the degree of settlement and time of consolidation. Soft soil also
influences the stability of embankment slope and coastal protection structures. The elevation of
reclamation level should consider the soil condition.
B. Bathymetric condition. Coastal reclamation also need to consider the depth of the reclaimed
coastal area. Deep bathymetric area will cost more, as the need of fill material is increase. The
thickness of reclamation fill will also bring the high settlement rate and likely of sliding.
C. Coastal Protection Structure. Filled area of reclamation must be protected from incoming wave
as well as to hold the embankment of soil. Coastal protection structure will be costly for high
reclamation level on soft soil.
To give a best design, a model either numerical of physical model is needed. The model in used to give
aid in the process of seeking the best design. The model is used to minimize the uncertainties that will
be occur in the design process. Kamphuis(2000) shows the design process in coastal engineering practice
usually follows the following chart:

Due to the limited time given by the owner, only numerical model will be performed in this study. A
numerical model can be used to check the integrity of structural designed by the owner previously.
The slope stability software will also be used to analyze the stability of coastal protection structures.
Figure 3 shows the typical results of slope stability analysis using GEO Slope.
