EFFECTS OF COMPETENCE, DISCIPLINE AND MOTIVATION ON EMPLOYEES’
PERFORMANCE IN PT PLN (PERSERO) AREA PELAYANAN DAN JARINGAN SURABAYA SELATAN

The purpose of present research was to examine effects of competence, discipline, and motivation on
performance of employees of PT. PLN (Persero) Area Pelayanan dan Jaringan (APJ) Surabaya Selatan. A
high number of customers constitute an impetus for PT. PLN (Persero) (APJ) Surabaya Selatan to improve
its employees’ performance with respect to competence, discipline, and motivation. Improvement of
competence, discipline, and motivation are expected to improve performance, leading to capability to deal
with problems encountered in the field. The present research was conducted in PLN (Persero) APJ
Surabaya Selatan starting from November to December 2010. A sample of 106 respondents was employed,
which was representative of total population in order to obtain near-actual results. Those four instruments
were pretested for validity and reliability. Data was analyzed by means of SEM and supported by LISREL
8.54 program. Results indicated that competence, discipline, and motivation collectively had significant
effects on performance level of employees of PT. PLN (Persero) APJ Surabaya Selatan with t-value of 5.54
 1.96. Partial testing for competence and discipline indicated significant effects on performance level
with t-value of 2.7  1.96 and 2.03  1.96, respectively. Partial testing for motivation indicated no effect
with t-value of ï€-0.30  1.96. Collectively, competence, discipline, and motivation had significant effects
on performance level of employees of PT. PLN (Persero) APJ Surabaya Selatan. However, partially, it was
only competence and discipline, but not motivation, that had effect on the level of employees’
performance. It was recommended for the leadership in PT. PLN (Persero) APJ Surabaya Selatan to use
competence and discipline as among indicators of performance appraisal, which would be tied to reward
and punishment in accordance with employees’ accomplishment. It would also serve as motivation for
employees to continuously improve their performance.
