Introduction:
Plant is a autotroph that can produced their own food by use chlorophyll to absorb
the light energy from the sun. Photosynthesis is known as the process of plant convert solar
energy to chemical energy to make its food by using sunlight and carbon dioxide to make
glucose. In this process, Plants require 3 main factors which are light energy ,Co2 and H20
to produce glucose and oxygen. In this experiment, we will test how light affect the
photosynthesis rate by placing the plant far from the lamp in difference distance (10, 15, 20
and 25 cm). We also experiment how carbon dioxide affect the photosynthesis rate by
adding Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) into it.

Purpose:
Our purpose of this experiment is to test how distances between plant and light affect
the photosynthesis rate.

Hypothesis:
If we set the Elodea cuttings near the lamp, then the photosynthesis will become
more effectively and will produce more bubbles. The closer the plant to the lamp, the better
photosynthesis. And if we added the Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) directly to the plant,
then it will increase the photosynthesis rate.

Materials:
Test Tube
Elodea cuttings
Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda)
Beaker with water
Lamp
Flow Chart :
1. Prepare a beaker, test tube, Elodea cutting, Sodium Bicarbonate, and a Lamp.
2. Pour the water into the beaker about half way
3. Place the Elodea cutting inside the test tube
4. Pour the water into the test tube
5. Put the test tube into the beaker by put the opening face upwards
6. Set the beaker in front of the lamp at the differences, starting from 10 cm
7. Start counting the number of oxygen bubbles that you see per minute for 5 minutes
8. Repeat steps 6-7 for distances of 15cm, 20cm, and 30 cm.
9. Average the rate of oxygen bubbles per minute.
10. Put a small amount of baking soda into the test tube and count the number of
bubbles for 5 minutes

Analyzing Results Questions:

1. Calculate the rate of photosynthesis for 1 day for each distance of light source.

Distance calculation result for one day

10 cm. 26*60=1560=for one hour about 37440 bubbles

1560*24=37440=for 1 day

15 cm. 31*60=1860=for one hour about 44640 bubbles

1860*24=44640=for one
day

20 cm. 20*60=1200=for one hour about 28800 bubbles

1200*24=28800=for one
day

25 cm. 7*60=420=for one hour about 10080 bubbles

420*24=10080=for one day

Sodium bicarbonate (15 117*60=7020=for one hour about 468480 bubbles

cm.) 7020*24=168480=for 1 day

2. Explain why changing the distance of the lamp affect the rate of photosynthesis. This may
require research on your part.
The plan that close the lamp have more photosynthesis rate because they get more
packets of light called photons are hitting the leaves. As you rise from low light
intensity to higher light intensity, the rate of photosynthesis will increase because
there is more light available to drive the reactions of photosynthesis. However, the
photosynthesis rate depend on other factor such as water and carbon dioxide too.

3. Explain how Oxygen is produced and released during photosynthesis

The first step of photosynthesis is to breakdown the water or H2O in light reaction or
dependent reaction and when the water breakdown plant will get electron to enter electron
transport chain and make NADPH later and also get protons in thylakoid membrane to
make ATP later.
4. Explain the effect Sodium Bicarbonate has on the rate of photosynthesis.
When we put Sodium Bicarbonate inside the tube it increases the bubble about
three times the normal because usually in photosynthesis it needed Co2 to be use in
light-independent reaction. So Co2 or Sodium Bicarbonate increases the rate of
photosynthesis.
5. Research using your text and/or the internet, how a desert plant, which takests in very
little water and has high heat intensity during the day, still efficiently produces glucose by
photosynthesis.
Desert plant take in very little water and they dont want to loose their water so they
close the stomata at day time to prevent loosing water,(water vapor). But if they close
the stomata it wont collect the Co2 and cant perform calvin cycle. So they evlove to
survive by closing stomata at day time and open it at night time. Then it collect Co2 at
night time and store in the mesophyll cell in the vacoule in the form of malate by
combining Co2 with PEP or enzyme that can react with only Co2 to produce malate
and store in vacoule. After that it still cant perform the reaction yet because they dont
have any light to perform any reaction so it store until day time. When day time come
the malate split the Co2 out while the stomata closing and now they can perfrom their
reaction by using the Co2 from the malate that collect at night time.

Conclusion:
In our group lab experiment about photosynthesis, we did the experiment to
demonstrate the process related to photosynthesis process that we have the light from lamp
and plant in test tube to show us how the plant produces the oxygen in photosynthesis
process. So we can see that it have the bubble come out and flew from plant to the surface
and we have to count the number of bubbles in each minute. The reason that it has the
bubbles come out from plant is because plant received the light from the lamp to produce the
bubbles and in this experiment it had the distance for the test tube that had plant in it to
compare the bubbles in different distance between the plant and lamp and as we see the
average bubbles went down if the distance went more far and far.We also use baking soda
at the last round of experiment in the best position that had the most number of bubbles that
is 15 centimeters far from the lamp as we see it increase numbers of bubble that release
from the plant from average at about 35 to 117 bubbles in each minute. That is because
baking soda has much cardioxide that also use in photosynthesis process so it make the
plant produce the large amount of oxygen compare with the one that fill with normal water
that have low amount of carbon dioxide
